Reader Advisory: In order to avoid
misunderstandings, some advertisers do
not offer “employment” but rather supply
the readers with manuals, directories
and other materials designed to help
their clients establish mail order selling
and other businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance should you send any
money in advance or give the client your
checking, license ID, or credit card
numbers. Also beware of ads that claim
to guarantee loans regardless of credit
and note that if a credit repair company
does business only over the phone it’s
illegal to request any money before
delivering its service. All funds are
based in US dollars. 800 numbers may
or may not reach Canada.
THE DIGGER IS now offering free online

NOTICE TO READERS
Licensed Contractors are required by State
law to list their license number in
advertisements. The law also states con-
tractors performing work totaling $500 or
more must be State licensed. Advertise-
ments appearing in this Publication without a
license number indicate that the contractor
is not licensed. For more
information contact: Contractors State
License Board. Toll Free 1-800-321-2752.
ATTENTION READERS!
NOTICE 900 NUMBERS!!
If you dial a telephone number with a 900
prefix or 900 area code, there may be a
charge plus possible toll. Ads that
advertise a “FREE” message may refer you
to a 976 number at the end of the recorded
message. If you call the 976 number you
may be charged accordingly. The Digger
Shopper does not verify advertising claims
and advises investigating if investment is
required.

Northern Valley Catholic Social Ser-
vices (NVCSS) will be helping clients get
on track to quitting smoking by asking, ad-
vising and referring their clients to cessa-
tion services as an active part of their client
care. NVCSS case managers provide free
and voluntary case management services
to pregnant and parenting teens, including
teen fathers, to help them get their children
off to a healthy start and now they will ex-
pand those services to address smoking.
NVCSS case managers will be trained
to ask about tobacco use, how to detect
if a client is motivated to quit, and how
to advise all clients who smoke to quit.
Case managers will refer clients who are
motivated to quit smoking directly to the
California Smokersʼ Helpline. The Help-
Northern Valley Catholic Social Services
Connecting Cessation to Care
line counselors will reach out to NVCSS
clients to help them create a customized
action plan for quitting that includes a
quit date and plan to overcome triggers to
smoke. Since 1992 the Helpline has pro-
vided free tobacco cessation services to al-
most a half a million Californians wanting

The Feather River Rowing Club re-
ceived good news last week that they
have been awarded a $15,020 grant from
the California Department of Boating and
Waterways to assist in the clubʼs dream to
get the Forebay Aquatic Center, previously
operated by the Associated Students, CSU,
Chico, that was closed in August of last
year reopened to the public. The Rowing
Club is finalizing operating arrangements
with the California State Parks to use the
existing facilities and equipment.
Dr. Mike Seely, a Director of the Feath-
er River Rowing Club, has been the driv-
ing force behind keeping the center open
and available to the public. Dr. Seely along
with representatives of the City of Oro-
ville and California State Parks worked
on the successful grant application. Oro-

ville Mayor, Linda Dahlmeier stated,
“Leadership and partnership, work-
ing together has proven, once again,
that Oroville is turning the page,
thank you to everyone that helped in
this grass roots effort to reopen the
Aquatic Center.”
A variety of programs are in the
process of being formulated includ-
ing boating safety instruction for
kayaks, sail boats, canoes, paddle
boards, windsurfers and rowing. Ad-
ditionally the grant provides schol-
arship funds for introductory pro-
grams such as; Sitting on Top of a Kayak,
Canoeing, Windsurfing, Sculling, Sweep
Rowing, Stand-up Paddling, High School
Rowing Camp and Youth Aquatic Camp.
Details about the programs to be offered
and the scholarships will be released at a
later date.
The Center is located at the Thermalito
North Forebay State Park off Hwy 70 (Gar-
den Drive exit) in Oroville. In addition to
the aquatic center the Forebay State Park
has picnic pavilions, large grassy areas,
water access, ADA compliant restroom
facilities and a large paved parking area.

The CSU, Chico Music Department
presents its spring semester choral concert,
Romantic Masters, Saturday, April 14th at
7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre.
Romantic Masters focuses on the music
of the 18th century and will include works
by Brahms, Bruckner, Rheinberger, and
Schumann.
One of the featured works -- Schubertʼs
“Mass in G” -- will be sung by the Uni-
versity Chorus, a large group made up of
community and student singers. Additional
performing groups for Romantic Masters
include the Acappella Choir and Chamber
Singers.
“The choirs have not done much Ro-
mantic Era literature since I came to CSU,
Chico five years ago,” said Dr. David
Scholz, Director of Choral Activities at
CSU, Chico. “The challenges about cho-
ral music from this particular era is that it
tends to have extended vocal and dynamic
ranges, which requires a fairly large choir
that is evenly balanced. When I looked at
the roster of students singing in the choir
this spring I knew that they would appreci-
ate and be up to the challenge of this kind
of music.”
In addition to the Romantic era works,
The Chamber Singers will perform “Six
Choral Ensembles to Explore 18th
Century Romantic Works During Spring
Semester Concert, April 14
Prayers from the Ark” by Ivor Davies and
“American Indian Songs” by Kenneth Jen-
nings.
“These are both wonderfully interesting
sets that the audience will enjoy listening
to as much as choir has enjoyed working
on them,” said Scholz.
Advance tickets for Romantic Masters,
at $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $6 student/
children, are available at the University
Box Office, 898-6333. Add $2 for tickets
purchased at the door. For disability-relat-
ed accommodations, please call 898-4325.

The Chico High Sports Boosters will
be sponsoring – “JUMP” - a New Mattress
Fund Raising Event on April 14th & 15th
from 10 am to 4 pm at Chico High School.
The Boosters have combined forces with
Chico Furniture Direct to allow local folks
to support the Chico High School sports
team of their choice by purchasing a brand
new mattress set at a discounted price.
Lori Twisselman, President of the
Sports Boosters said, “We see this as a real
“Win/Win” for everyone involved. We will
be providing the opportunity to purchase
something that people need at a discount
price; in return the Sports Teams at Chico
HS will earn much needed funds.”
The Chico High Sports Boosters have
been very successful in supporting Chico
High School athletic teams. Since 2007
they have raised in excess of $100,000 an-
nually.
The event will be fun. Folks that want to
Chico Sports Boosters Announce

participate can come to the High School at
their convenience on either day. A wide va-
riety of mattress sets from National Brand
Name sources will be set up for folks to try
out. Trained personnel will be on hand to
answer questions and help in the selection
process. In addition to new mattress sets,
there will be mattress covers, bedframes
and power adjustable beds available for
purchase. All of the purchases will be de-
livered to the buyer at no additional cost.
Cash, Local Checks, Major Credit Cards
as well as Visa or MasterCard Debit Cards
will be accepted.
Proceeds from the event will benefit all
sports teams at Chico High School. The
Boosters want to express their gratitude
publicly to the Students and Parent Reps
who worked very hard to make this a suc-
cessful effort and to Chico Furniture Direct
for their sponsorship of this event.

Treating latent tuberculosis normally
requires nine months of daily pill-taking,
but a recent study showed that a far shorter
course of medication, with once-a-week
drugs, works just as well. The Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) has now recom-
mended the shorter course of treatment for
people with latent TB infection.
“This is the biggest breakthrough in the
treatment of latent TB in decades,” said Dr.
Mark Lundberg, Health Officer for Butte
County Public Health.
Tuberculosis is caused by a slow-
growing bacterium that usually infects the
lungs. In most cases the bodyʼs immune
system controls the organism, so it doesnʼt
cause disease. Such “latent” cases can turn
into organ-destroying disease, however,
if a personʼs immune defenses are weak-
ened by conditions such as cancer, AIDS,
old age, or poor nutrition. To prevent that
from happening, doctors advise preven-
tive treatment for people whose test results
indicate a recent latent infection. For de-
cades, that has meant taking a daily dose of
the drug isoniazid for nine months. A sim-
pler regimen — a higher dose of isoniazid
taken once a week, and another drug, rifa-
pentine, also taken weekly, both for three
months – has now been shown to be just
as effective.
More than 11 million people living in
the United States have latent TB infec-
tion. About 5 to 10 percent (550,000 to
1.1 million) of those infected with TB in
the United States will develop TB disease
if not treated. An estimated 300,000 to
400,000 people in the US begin treatment
each year for latent TB infection, but many
do not complete the lengthy treatment. The
12-dose regimen may ensure better com-
pletion rates as it simplifies and shortens
treatment from 270 daily doses over nine
months, to 12 once-weekly doses over
three months by directly observed therapy
(a healthcare worker observes the patient
take each dose of medication).
“A shorter course of treatment means
that more patients will take, and complete,
treatment”, stated Lundberg. “Thatʼs a big
Shorter Course Of Treatment Recom-
mended For Latent Tuberculosis
plus, both for individual patients, and for
the public health goal of eliminating tuber-
culosis.”
It is estimated that 4.2% of the US pop-
ulation has latent tuberculosis infection.
In Butte County that means approximately
9,240 people are infected. Achieving the
goal of TB elimination in the United States
means not only treating those people who
already have TB disease, but also suc-
cessfully treating those with latent TB
infection. According to Lundberg, Public
Healthʼs goal is to identify those at highest
risk for TB, test them, and treat those who
are infected so they do not progress to ac-
tive disease. Persons should get tested for
TB by their doctor or local health depart-
ment if they:
· Have spent time with a person known
or suspected to have active TB disease
· Have HIV infection or another condi-
tion that weakens the immune system and
puts them at high risk for active TB dis-
ease
· Have symptoms of active TB disease
· Are from a country where active TB
disease is very common (most countries in
Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa,
Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia)
· Live somewhere in the United States
where active TB disease is more com-
mon such as a homeless shelter, migrant
farm camp, prison or jail, or some nursing
homes
· Inject illegal drugs
Persons from these groups should be
periodically tested for TB.

Spring weather in Oroville is so unpre-
dictable, as evidenced by the pouring rain
hitting my windows as I write this column
right before Easter. I had a dilemma this
week; my daughter needed new jeans,
pronto! I had hoped to bridge the gap of
winter and spring by making those jeans
that were getting too short (tried to call
them capris, but they were really high wa-
ters) last just a little bit longer. Here I was,
with no spring weather in sight; so, shorts
were out of the question, and her jeans
were not going to last another day.
Frantically I ran to town knowing that
I would probably be hard pressed to find
any winter clothes in the stores. Shorts,
swimsuits and tank tops filled the shelves,
with rain coming down in buckets outside.
Luckily we found jeans on the clearance
rack that fit, so I bought two pairs know-
ing that winter may morph into summer
around June 1st, so those shorts will have
to wait.
I started thinking about our crazy sea-
sons, and how we have such a unique
weather system in our area. My goal is to
create the perfect spring/summer ward-
robe that will carry over into a hot fall that
makes the most of the clothing budget for
my growing kids. Here is what I have come
up with to create a basic clothing wardrobe
that should be foolproof for surviving the
seasons.
1. Shorts—a must have for Oroville.
Shorts will carry us through most of the
year (and
sometimes the entire year). Be sure to
have enough pairs to cover at least five
days,
so you are not trying to wash clothes
midweek. (I have learned this lesson well.)
I also
suggest the adjustable waist option,
which allows for you to buy a slightly
larger size and take the waist in as need-
ed. With the way kids grow, you will be
lucky to get a couple of seasons wear out
of them. Most shorts now hit about knee
length, which makes them perfect for fall
wear as well; just add a sweatshirt, and
usually you are warm enough.
2. Tank Tops—another must have for
hot weather but also great for layering in
winter. Your child can wear them for play-
ing sports, exercising, and even sleeping
in. Have a variety of colors and even more
than one of a favorite color. I really think
you cannot have too many tank tops, espe-
cially for girls.
3. T-shirts—this is the basic of any boy
wardrobe. Short sleeves are the best, since
they can be warmed up in the winter with
a sweatshirt, so have enough T-shirts for
everyday of the week and more. This will
also save you from doing extra loads of
laundry during the week.
4. Flip Flops—every kid should have
a pair, even if they are not big fans. This
footwear can be used for camp (showers),
the pool, and for a quick run outside or to
the store. A must have.
5. Sandals—girls should have a pair or
two, and boys can chose something more
manly like a Teva style that can be worn
while climbing rocks. Summer is hot, feet
sweat— enough said.
6. Tennis Shoes—all kids should have
a good pair of tennis shoes to wear in the
spring/
summer for any athletics.
7. Dresses—for girls, some summer
dresses can transition into fall with the ad-
dition of a light sweater and even carry into
spring. Leggings can be added and boots
as well for winter depending on the dress.
These are some of the basics that I have
found to be useful living in Oroville, to
keep my kids comfortable. These pieces
can transition easily between our crazy
seasons, and often carry kids back to
school in the fall.
Now if only I could find a way to keep
my kids from growing!
