ABSTRACT

Protection of an induction motor (IM) against possible problems, such as overvoltage, over current, overload, over temperature, under voltage and single phasing, occurring in the course of its operation is very important, because it is used i n t e n s i v e l y i n i n d u s t r y a s a n actuator. IMs can be protected using some components, such as timers, c o n t a c t o r s , v o l t a g e a n d c u r r e n t r e l a ys . T h i s m e t h o d i s k n o w n a s t h e c l a s s i c a l m e t h o d t h a t i s v e r y b a s i c a n d i n v o l v e s m e c h a n i c a l d yn a m i c parts. Programmable logic controller based protection methods have eliminated most of the mechanical components.

Now we are using logic controllers, in this method, all contactors, timers , r e l a ys a n d t h e c o n v e r s i o n c a r d s a r e e l i m i n a t e d . E x p e r i m e n t a l r e s u l t s s h o w that the LC based protection method developed, cost less, provides higher accuracy as well as safe and visual environment compared with the c l a s s i c a l b a s e d p r o t e c t i o n s ys t e m .

T h i s s ys t e m u s e s t h e L C f o r d e t e c t i n g t h e f a u l t i n i n d u c t i o n m o t o r a n d according to the fault.

CHAPTER 1 1.1 INTRODUCTION

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVE This project is therefore aimed at designing a complete protection system for a three phase induction motor The circuit would protect against 1. 2. 3. 4. Over Voltage Under Voltage Single Phasing Coil Over heating

The system would also give the operator a Start /stop control button

1.3 METHODOLOGY This project employ locally available components to design and investigate the possibility of the protection of a three phase motor against, overvoltage,under voltage, single phasing and coil overheating. The operation shall be based on the block diagram shown in fig. 1.1 below.
