and exhibit the Messiah stretched within the Holy
Oblation containing the sphere of the Zodiac and
seven planets.
It has already been explained that the value of
the name Christos, 1,480, being the side of a square
inscribed within the Zodiac or fixed stars, gives
the measure of his body, extended in the form
of a cross throughout the whole universe. Sur-
rounded thus by the twelve signs, he represents
the Messiah, or periodic Divinity, connected with
the cycle of the great precessional period of 25,816
years. A month of this great year is 2,151 years
( 25,816 = 2,151), and it is supposed that the

ancients accepted the particular sign, in which the
sun rose at the vernal equinox, during this cycle,
as the symbol of the Messiah. It is thought to
be on this account that the Egyptians worshipped
the black and white bulls, Apis and Mnevis, as
emblems of the Deity, when the sun was in
Taurus, while the Greeks probably called their

Although Vitruvius does not show how the
theory of music which he introduces into his
treatise is to be applied to architecture, it is certain
that some method of harmonic proportion was
known to, and practised by, the Greek architects.
We are told by Serlio, who wrote in 1537, that
there were seven quadrangular proportions gener-
ally used in architecture. “The first figure is a
perfect square of four equal sides, and four right
angles. The second figure is a sesquiquarta, that
is, a square and a quarter (5 : 4). The third figure
is a sesquitertia, that is, a square and a third (being
of the proportion of 4 : 3, it is the diatessaron).
The fourth figure is of the proportion called
diagonea, because its length is equal to the diagonal
of the square; it is irrational, there being no simple
way of finding out this proportion from the frac-
tional part of a square. The fifth figure is called
sesquialtera, that is, a square and a half (it is of
the proportion of 3 : 2, or diapente). The sixth
figure is called superbipartiens tertias, that is a
square and two thirds added. The seventh and
last figure is called dupla, and is formed of two
squares joined together” (this is the proportion of
2 : 1, or diapason).
Serlio, like Vitruvius, suggests no way of apply-

Of the religious mysteries of Pagan Rome very little is now
known. St. Augustine (“De Civitate Dei,” lib. vii. cap. 34)
tells us, on the authority of Varro, that some books were dis-
covered by a man who was ploughing the land near the grave
of Numa. These books contained the secret knowledge under-
lying the theology instituted by Numa, and that, according to
St. Augustine, was too infamous even to be retained as the
mystery of the priesthood, from which it would appear that it
was very bad indeed. Numa, it was said, feared to publish
the books on account of their singular content; nor did he
dare to burn them, for fear of devils; so as a compromise he
buried them in the earth. The senate ultimately obtained
possession of them; but although they thus discovered the
shameful nature of their ancestral religion, they were afraid to
overturn it. Nevertheless that the revelation of the ancient

745. And hence is Tetragrammaton Tzabaoth
called Yesod, the Foundation (the ninth step).
Also it is written Ps. cxxxii. 13: ‘Since Tetra-
grammaton hath chosen Tzion to be a habitation for
himself, He hath desired her.’ 746. When
Matronitha, the mother, is separated and conjoined
with the King face to face in the excellence of the
Sabbath, all things become one body. 747. And
then the Holy One—blessed be He!—sitteth on
His throne, and all things are called the Complete
of the figure, and is consequently the place occupied by the
phallos of Macrocosmos and the omphalos of Microcosmos.
Astronomically it is the sun.

the number deduced from A kaˆ W is 832 (fallÒj). In the
Apocalypse, where the statements occurs, it is written in some
manuscripts, tÕ ”Alfa, kaˆ tÕ 'Wmšga (902 + 31 + 1219 =) 2152,
or even ”Alfa kaˆ W (532 + 31 + 800 =) 1363 + 3 = 1366 (fallÒj
kte…j), and 532 + 800 = 1332 ÷ 2 = 666. Again, A 1 + W 800 =
801, which Irenæ us tells us is equivalent by Gematria to
perister£, the Dove or Holy Ghost, and 800 is the perimeter
of the new Jerusalem (200 × 4 = 800).
