➡There is a progress odf the soul that corresponds to the degrees of reality in things and this is exemplified through the divided line ➡Progress toward wisdom as ou move along the divided lline ➡To produce wise persons is the ultimate goal of plato, and that is best illustrated by the allegory of the cave, in book VII of the republic ➡With an allegory it is a way of making us experience the allegory of the cavea way of absorbing a concept ➡Search for wisdom is difficult, painful and dangerous ➡The inside o the cave reresents the sensible world while the outside represents the intelligible world ➡The sun represents the form of the good ➡Education is the turning of the soul to face the fire ➡What is the motivation to wnt to pursue this journey if it is so tumultuous? It is the love of wisdom and he discusses what love is in the dialogue “the symposium” ➡Ad socrates says well: “I dont know, myself, what love is. But a wise woman taught me about love and this is what she said : ‘love is the child of need and resourcefulness; it means love is born driven for the need f something that we lack and want and aided by resourcefulness, ingenuity and seeking what we long for’” ➡What is it that the lover lacks and longs for? For the beautiful and the good ➡For the purpose of making that beauty and goodness his/her own, to possess it forever ➡So love entails a characteristic of immortality , and in doing this the lover will gain happiness ➡And the desire for immortality is the need to have children tht will continue that love ➡The candidate for this initiation into the mysteries of love, oe cannot begin to early to devote themselves to the beauty of the body, first he will fall in love with the beauty of an individual body, then he must grasp the beauty of the soul ➡From the love of beautiful souls he will come to understand the love of laws and institutions , because beautiful souls can only exist in harmonious, just societies , and to have a good society with just laws it requires knowledge, which leads to the love of knowledge

➡Whoever has been initiated insofar as the mysteries of love and as you pass the point of the lve of knowledge, then you will be initiated in the singular beauty of everything, a single invioable object that from which all beauty comes forth it is never ending nor begining and this is the love of beauty itself ➡It is a woderful vision it is not anything that is of the flesh, it subsists of itself in an internal oneness ➡So why would anyone want to leave the cave? For the love of wisdom ➡The immortality of the soul and Plato ➡He begins with a distinction: those things that move(chnge) only when other things move(change) them, and those things that move by themselves (change by themselves) ➡The living body doest not love by itself a corpse is a body that must be moved by something else ➡Living has a principle of activity in itself : te soul (the psyché) ➡Anything that has an external source of motion is soulless ➡Animate= has a soul ➡Inanimate= does not have a soul ➡Anima=soul in latin ➡If that is the case then the soul is immortal, that which is ever changing is immortal ➡Moreover the self mover is the principle source of motion for all things that are not self moved ➡Life ( principle of self-motion) is the very essence of the soul ➡Because nothing can abandon its nature, the soul does not die ➡It must e the task of those who love wisdom to separatethe body ad the soul even further ➡And the habituating to collect together as far as possible as possible ➡Seeking wisdom means freeing the soul from the body and keeping them separated as far as possible ➡Te philosopher is constantly training himself away from death
