WALK AROUND POSTPONED

The Walk Around, originally scheduled for tomorrow, has been rescheduled for Friday, April 27, after the Spring Recess. The forecast for tomorrow is rain, and we want to do our best to plan for a successful event, and not disappoint our enthusiastic GATORS! So, keep those walking shoes ready and we’ll see you on the field! SPRING RECESS Garden Gate will be closed Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20, for our Spring Recess. We are all looking forward to enjoying some well-deserved rest, relaxation and play. May you travel safely and build great memories. School will resume on Monday, April 23.

Parents, please remember that there are two designated waiting areas on campus where we'd like you to wait for your Fourth or Fifth Grade student to be released from class: Under the shade structure (lunch tables) or at the tables in front of the Cafe Window (snack tables). Please do not wait in the hallways, as low noise, such as conversation, can be disruptive for classes still in session. Similarly, for safety and security reasons, students are not permitted to play on the play structures or the blacktop areas after school. Instead, please have your children wait, seated, with you. The Garden Gate Staff appreciates your support with maintaining our learning environment and keeping students safe.

DISMISSAL TIME

TRAFFIC AND PARKING LOT

Student safety is our first priority. Follow these simple rules to ensure student safety: Always drop off along the curb. Do not allow your child to get out of the car in the parking lot alone, and attempt to walk across the parking lot. The curb is a “No Parking Anytime” zone. When at the curb, drivers must remain in their vehicles at all times. Drivers who leave their vehicles unattended, may be ticketed by the Cupertino Sheriff’s Department. Always cross at a cross walk. Hold your child’s hand, and teach your child to always look both ways. Avoid getting stuck in traffic. Leave home earlier to make sure your child arrives at school on time. Students may be on campus beginning at 7:45 a.m.

PLANNING AHEAD

Brain scientists now know what parents have always suspected: Kids just aren’t very good at planning ahead. But that doesn’t mean parents can’t help children develop this skill. Answer yes or no to the questions below to see if you are teaching your child to look ahead: ___1. Do you talk with your child about all of the steps involved when he has a big project for school? ___2. Do you help your child make a plan to earn and save the money he needs to buy something special? ___3. Do you make sure your child does homework before relaxing with TV or playing games? ___4. Will you make a plan with your child of things you want to do this summer? ___5. Do you help your child make a to-do list of the things he needs to complete every day? How well are you doing? Each yes means you’re helping your child learn to think and plan ahead. For each no answer, try that idea in the quiz.

PROPELLERS

Do you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist them to grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to spark conversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight! This week's propeller: What actions are you taking now to make the world better in the future?

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

STAR TESTING DATES

•For the protection of the students, please remember that students are not to be on the Garden Gate campus before 7:45 a.m. There is no adult supervision until 7:45 a.m. •Please do not congregate outside of the classrooms while school is still in session. This is very disruptive to both the teacher and the students and could be a distraction from valuable learning time. •Every Tuesday is early dismissal day. Please remember that all a.m. Kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:10 a.m. and all p.m. Kindergarten students along with students in grades 1-5 are dismissed at 1:30. Please remember to pick up your children promptly.

The California Standardized Assessment (STAR) testing dates are being published so that parents can plan ahead. STAR Testing will be held from April 30, 2012 through May 11, 2012 for 2nd - 5th grades (with makeup testing May 14th -18th). Your child will need to take the entire test in order to receive complete STAR scores. Please do not schedule family trips or make appointments during these times. It is very important that our students are at school during the testing.

BEFORE YOU MAKE TRAVEL PLANS
At the end of the school year students must be in attendance on the last day of school, June 12, 2012 to retain their place on the roster for the 2012-2013 school year. At the beginning of the school year, students must be in attendance on the first day of school, August 20, 2012 or they will not retain their place on the roster. When you are making travel plans, please consider the possible ramifications. If you have any questions, please contact Student Assignment at (408) 252-3000 ext. 110.

HOME LUNCHES

To encourage responsibility, children should bring their lunch with them to school in the morning. We recommend that each child have some money in his/her lunch account so that in the event of a forgotten lunch, the child can purchase a hot lunch. Please remember to mark all lunches brought to school with the child’s name and room number and place it on the cart outside the school office by 11:00 a.m. They will be delivered to the classroom lunch cart by student helpers. Lunches cannot be delivered to the classroom or lunch tables byparents. Students are not permitted to wait by the office for parents to bring a lunch to them. This is against our school safety policy. So be sure to place the lunch on the cart before 11:00 a.m. Thank you for your cooperation.

SCRIP AND eSCRIP

ABSENCES AND TARDIES

Attendance and punctuality are important in establishing good behaviors and building responsibility in young children. Please ensure that your child is at school everyday and that they arrive on time. If your child will be absent, please call the attendance line promptly (252-5414, ext. 6). If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m. they must report to the school office for a late slip before entering the classroom. Under state law, three unexcused absences or tardies may be considered truancy.

Remember to purchase Scrip on Tuesday afternoons between 1:15 - 1:45 p.m. and also on Friday mornings between 7:45-8:15 a.m. Scrip is spent just like cash on everyday expenses. eScrip also provides an easy way to earn money for the PTA. Participating merchants donate a percentage of purchases to the school. Parents (also family and friends) should visit www.escrip.com to register their credit/debit cards, Safeway Card, and PW Supermarket Card. Be sure to specify Garden Gate Elementary School (eScrip number is 139188329.) For those who don’t have internet access, please fill out and turn in an eScrip registration form (available during scrip sales times or in the school office).
