San Diego Padres (2-4) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (4-1)
RHP Anthony Bass (0-1, 2.25) vs. RHP Ian Kennedy (1-0, 4.05) Thursday, April 12, 2012 • Petco Park Game 7 • Home Game 7 • 1090 AM • 860 AM • FSSD

VS. THE DIAMONDBACKS: The Padres conclude a three-game series against the Diamondbacks tonight that will close out the Friars’ opening homestand...San Diego went 7-11 against the 2011 NL West champs last year, including a 5-4 mark at Petco Park...dating back to 2010, the Padres have gone a 14-6 at home vs. Arizona, with the pitching staff posting a 2.79 ERA (57 ER/184.0 IP) and 8.7 strikeouts per 9.0 IP over that stretch. LAST TIME OUT: San Diego pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind win yesterday over the Diamondbacks, powered by a two-run, eighth-inning homer from Chris Denorfia...the Padres fell behind early, as Cory Luebke surrendered one run as part of a four-walk, 43-pitch first inning...Luebke regrouped, holding the D-backs to that one run while pitching into the sixth before handing it over to the bullpen...four relievers combined to work scoreless ball over the final 3.2 frames, paving the way for Denorfia’s go-ahead blast. LONG DIVISION: The Padres are in the middle of a stretch in which they play 13 straight games against NL West opponents to start the season...their first non-NL West matchup does not come until they open the next homestand against the Philadelphia Phillies. ON THE HILL: Anthony Bass takes the hill tonight, making his first start of the season after beginning the year in the bullpen...in two relief appearances, he has allowed one run in 4.0 innings of work...Bass split the 2011 campaign between Double-A San Antonio, Triple-A Tucson and the Padres, seeing his first Big League action...went 2-0 with a 1.68 ERA (9 ER/48.1 IP) in 27 Major League appearances (three starts). BIRTHDAY BOY: Brad Brach is celebrating his 26th birthday today...born April 12, 1986, Brach shares a birthday with author Tom Clancy (1947), talk show host David Letterman (1947), actress Shannen Doherty (1971) and actress/model Brooklyn Decker (1987). ARMED AND DANGEROUS: San Diego’s pitching staff ranks tied for seventh in the Majors with 52 strikeouts, averaging 8.07 per 9.0 IP...the Padres starting staff is averaging 8.74 strikeouts per 9.0 IP and ranks tied for fifth in the Majors with 33 on the year...leading the way are Edinson Volquez (15 Ks in 12.0 IP) and Cory Luebke (11 Ks in 10.0 IP), who are each averaging over a strikeout per inning. WALK THIS WAY: The Padres have walked a Major League-leading 33 times over the first six games, including 29 free passes in the last four games (10 on Saturday, 8 on Sunday, 8 on Tuesday, 3 on Wednesday)...they are averaging a walk every 6.97 plate appearances...by comparison, the average Major League team has walked just 18 times and is drawing a base on balls every 12.09 plate appearances. ON THE MEND: Mark Kotsay made an appearance with the Lake Elsinore Storm as part of a rehab assignment last night, going 0-for-4 in the leadoff spot...he was originally placed on the 15-day DL 4/3 (retro to 4/1) with a strained right calf. FIRST IMPRESSIONS AREN’T EVERYTHING: The Padres have started the season at 2-4 for the 10th time in franchise history...the last time the club started with a 2-4 mark, they went on to finish 90-72 and fell one win shy of the playoffs...their previous 2-4 start came in 2006, when the club finished 88-74 and claimed the NL West championship. GET ON ANY WAY YOU CAN: Despite going 3-for-20 over the first six games of the season, Headley has managed to reach base via walk on seven occassions, and is posting a .370 on-base percentage...his seven walks have each come in the last four games and rank as the most in the Majors...in fact, Headley has walked more times than the Pittsburgh Pirates have as a team (five walks in five games). BULLYING PEN: San Diego relievers have combined to allow seven runs over their 24.0 innings of work in the first six games of the season, posting a 2.63 ERA...over the six games, Andrew Cashner (3.0), Huston Street (3.0), Luke Gregerson (1.2), Joe Thatcher (0.2) and Josh Spence (0.1) have each worked scoreless ball...the Padres bullpen has limited opponents to a .173 clip (14-for-81) with 19 strikeouts to start the season. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the club’s Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the club’s history.
