DEGREE EXAMINATION, NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2007 Annual Pattern-First Year Computer Science and Engineering EE 1X11-ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Answer all the questions: PART A-(10 X 2=20 marks) 1.Define Kirchoffs Laws. 2.Give any two important characteristics of series resonance. 3.An iron ring with a mean circumference of 140cm and cross-section of 12cm^2 is wound around with 500 turns of wire. When the exciting current is 2A, the flux is 1.2mwb. What is the relative permeability of iron? 4.Define Hysteresis and Eddy current loss. 5.Draw the current-torque characteristics of d.c.series motor. 6.Give the condition for maximum efficiency of a transformer. 7.At what p.f the regulation of a synchronous machine is zero? 8.Draw the torque-slip characteristic of slip-ring induction motor. 9.Give the transfer function of unity feedback system. 10.Define rise time and % over shoot in time domain specification of step response of a system. PART B-(5 X 16=80 marks) 11.(a).(i).Give the algorithm for solving a circuit problem using mesh analysis. (ii).Using nodal analysis, find the currents in each battery in the circuit. (Or) 11.(b).(i).Show that in three phase star connected system line voltage isv3 times the phase voltage. (ii).Find the Average and RMS value of voltage wave 12.(a).(i).Compare the analogy between electric and magnetic circuits. (ii).A 15mH coil is connected in series with another coil. The total inductance is 70mH. When one of the coils is reversed, the total inductance is 30mH. Find self inductance of second coil, mutual inductance and coefficient of coupling. (Or) 12.(b).(i).Explain AC operation of magnetic materials and show how will you separate iron loss. (ii).The total inductance of two coupled coils in series aiding and series opposing connections are 1.4 X 10^-3H and 0.6 X 10^-3H. Find the mutual inductance and the coefficient of coupling. 13.(a).(i).Derive the EMF equation of a d.c. generator. (ii).A d.c motor runs at 900rpm when fed from 460V supply. What will be the speed when it is fed from 200V supply. Assume the flux decreases by 30%. Neglect voltage drop. (Or) 13.(b).(i).Draw the phasor diagram of transformer under loading condition and explain. (ii).The required no load voltage ratio in a 150KVA, 50Hz single phase transformer is 5000/250 V. Find the efficiency at half rated KVA, unity power factor and efficiency at full load, 0.8p.f lagging. The full load copper losses are 1800 W and core losses are 1500W. 14.(a).(i).Explain the determination of synchronous impedance. (ii).Find the voltage regulation at full load 0.8.p.f. lagging for a 3 phase, 2500 KVA, 6600 V star

connected alternator having an armature resistance of 0.073 ohm per phase and a synchronous reactance of 10.7 ohms per phase. (Or) 14.(b).(i).Explain any two starting methods of single phase Induction motor. (ii).Using power flow diagram of three phase Induction Motor, show the various stages of mechanical power output obtained. 15.(a).(i).Explain open loop control system and closed loop control system with a suitable example. (ii).With schematic diagram of A.C servo motor, assuming linear torque-speed characteristic determine the transfer function of motor. (Or) 15.(b).(i).In the electrical network inputs are e1(t) and e2(t) and the outputs are i1(t) and i2(t). Determine the transfer function matrix and express I1(s) and I2(s) in terms of E1(s) and E2(s). (ii).A servo motor is found to have the following open loop transfer function while the feedback path transfer is unity. Find out whether the system is stable or not. G(s)=20/(s(s+5))
