Exam #1 Study Guide, Perspectives The scope of our first exam will cover the material from the

introductory class up through Mondays lecture on Stout, and his reading, Ethics After Babel. You are not responsible for the Origins chapter. You are responsible for all of the class lectures, and the reading material. You are responsible for the video content that we watched in class as well. This exam format will be objective questions, using a scan tron. You must bring a pencil to use with the scan tron. I will provide the scan tron. This study guide will give you some terms and areas of study that you should pay particular attention to. It does not give you the entire content for which you are responsible. Topics Be able to distinguish associations between qualitative research and quantitative research. Be familiar with the Did you know that? facts from the first lecture. Why should we study the worlds religions? (First lecture) Be familiar with the general size of the worlds largest religions. What is the difference between religion and spirituality (according to our lecture in class)? Be able to discuss Bergers understanding of social construction, i.e., 3 steps of the process, characteristics, etc. Review Lorbers article and make sure you know what we covered from it in class. In general, be familiar with the basic ideas of evolutionary psychology (ep). What does evolutionary psychology have to do with religion? Be familiar with the basic findings from Busss article (I wont ask you to list from memory all the risks or benefits for each strategy from each gender, but you should be able to reason from a list of options which one does or does not belong to a particular gender per strategy) With Bowies chapter on anthropology of religion, you should be able to associate theorists approaches with their ideas, sample question: Sundklers work among Christians in South Africa illustrates which strategy of research approach? A: Studying religion from within a belief system. For the slide on theorists (starting with Spencer), know their basic ideas (see reading if your notes arent clear). For defining religion, just know that Gertz says we should have a thick description. Be familiar with the issues in modern culture examples: the Dubai-sex case. Be familiar with Mary Douglasss material, i.e., know what matter out of place means. What did we learn in class about left-handed and right-handed people? What did we learn in our discussion about people with down-syndrome? What does the video we watched illustrate? Why dont you like a roach in your grits? (academic answer) Regarding ethics, look over the first part of our last uLearn slide, and make sure you understand the basics. For the Stout article, make sure you are very familiar with his argument (what the problem is, how he illustrates it, and what he thinks we should do about it)
