Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame Weak Storey

Open ground storey

Unusually high storey

Soft lower storey

Check these: Alternative 1. For the floor with weak storey, design all columns and beams with member forces equal to the 2.5 times the forces output from bare frame model. Alternative2: For ground open storey, besides the columns are designed for the incoming forces, add additional shear walls with shear resistance capacity of 1.5 times storey shear. Place shear wall as far as possible from CG (in perimeter of building) and symmetric about both axes. Attach the calculation sheet for the alternative 1 and alternative 2

Unusually low storey

Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame Column stiffness irregularity (Short Column)

Check stiffness of column Acceptable ( if stiffness of Columns are equal) Unacceptable ( if stiffness of Columns are unequal)

Unacceptable Recommend to provide gap between block

Unacceptable Use Time history analysis to capture response of the structure.

Isolate staircase landing beam with column to prevent short column due to staircase landing beam.

Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame 2) Incomplete load path Incomplete Load path

Interruption in column

Interruption in beam

Load should have direct load path from slab to beam, from beam to column and from column to foundation.

Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame 3) Possibility of pounding effect

If floor height of both building are at same If floor height of both building are at different level level Acceptable Acceptable (if gap>60mm * nos of storey) (if gap>100mm * nos of storey) Un acceptable Un acceptable (if gap <60mm * nos of storey) (if gap <100mm * nos of storey) For exact evaluation of gap between building, Check output of the numerical model if top storey deflection is then gap between two buildings with same floor level at each storey should be = R* . For building with different floor level of each similar storey , gap should be =2* R* Attach calculation sheet for the precise gap between buildings

4) Redundancy No. of continuous frames along both orthogonal directions should be equal to or greater than 3.

5) Grid plan Regular grid plan

Irregular grid plan

Sketch grid plan in corresponding space in table above, if all grid spacing are within 15% of variation we can assume it as a regular grid plan.

Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame 6) Approximate Seismic Wt/m2=12KN/m2 Use area of all floors excluding ground floor to evaluate Seismic wt of the building Area of floor=..m2 Approx Seismic wt=..KN 7) Building time period Dx= dimension of foot print of building along X Dy= dimension of foot print of building along Y H= height of the building Time period along X= Tx= 0.09h/Dx Time period along X= Ty= 0.09h/Dy 8) Check for Base shear a. NBC 105 Z= I=. K= C=.. Base shear, Vb = (CZIK)* Seismic Wt b. IS 1893, Part I Z=.. I= Sa/g=.. R= Base shear, Vb= (Z/2)*(I/R)*(Sa/g) Use higher of the base shear among these two base shears. Note: for Moment resisting Frame with complete load path and regular grid plan take R = 5 For Intermediate Moment resisting frame with complete load path and irregular grid plan take ,R=4 For incomplete load path building with regular or irregular grid plan , R= 3 or lower (consider IS 1893,part1)

Check list for Professionally Engineered RC Buildings with Bare Frame 9) Strong Column Weak beam check. Select inner beam column joints.

PT MCT

MBL

MBR

MCB PB
Check for the condition, (MCT+MCB) >1.1(MBL+MBR) => Acceptable (MCT+MCB) <1.1(MBL+MBR) => Uacceptable Attach calculation for one face beam column joint and one inner beam column joint

Note: if this condition doesnt satisfied then satisfying all other condition will not make building earthquake resistance.
