INTRODUCTION
What better cause to celebrate the new season than Arts Council England's recent announcement that The English Concert is among its new National Portfolio of funded organisations. In the context of substantial cuts, this is a tremendous vote of confidence. Our grant will be specifically for work outside London from 2012. I look forward to announcing more details later in the season. After our recent recording 'Three Baroque Tenors' with Ian Bostridge, it is wonderful to open the season with him at Wigmore Hall. Indeed, Ian is a featured artist at the Wigmore over the coming months, and our 2012 concerts with him include distinguished guests Angelika Kirchschlager and the Aurora Orchestra in repertoire not always Baroque! Another recent recording success for The English Concert has been our first CD with Elizabeth Watts Bach Cantatas and Arias. We return with her and Laurence Cummings to Wigmore Hall in November to perform less well-known but nonetheless superb vocal works by Alessandro Scarlatti. After a sell-out US tour last year with Alice Coote, who sings with us at Wigmore Hall in 2012, we travel to the States this autumn with

countertenor Andreas Scholl, focussing on Purcells semi-operas, Fairy Queen and King Arthur. Tours to Germany, Holland and Belgium will mark the welcome return of Vesselina Kasarova, Mark Padmore, and Lucy Crowe, whose debut recital CD with us, Il caro Sassone, will be released later this year. The Choir of The English Concert is again moving to the forefront of our activities, first with Schtz's Christmas Story as part of this year's St John's, Smith Square Christmas Festival, and next year in the closing concert of the Leipzig Bachfest, with Bach's monumental Mass in B minor. Recent residencies at London museums include the V&A in 2009 for their International Baroque exhibition, and our first Master Class at the Foundling Museum in 2010. Next year we return to this gem of a museum, with its strong Handel associations, to present concerts during their Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens exhibition and to give a second Master Class. All in all, a great deal of wonderful music and music-making to look forward to. I hope very much to welcome you during the coming months.

Heinrich Schtz was the leading German composer of the 17th Century and the first of truly international renown. Towards the end of his long life he devoted himself entirely to composing church music, of which The Christmas Story is his masterpiece. The narration, told by a tenor evangelist, is accompanied to great dramatic effect and interspersed Priests by trombones, and the irritable Herod by a pair of cornetti. The heavenly choir is represented by a 6-part chorus, bringing this wonderful work to a joyful conclusion.

THE FOUNDLING MUSEUM

VAUXHALL PLEASURE GARDENS The delight of all persons of reputation and taste
In 1732 the Spring Gardens in Vauxhall, the oldest of the London pleasure gardens, were leased to one Jonathan Tyers, who opened them for public entertainment every evening during the summer months. Chief among the attractions were the orchestral concerts which took place the players wearing cocked hats in an elegant raised bandstand among the trees or, in bad weather, in a rotunda. The very best players and singers of the time were engaged, and resident composers included Thomas Arne and James Hook, though many others also produced works, particularly songs, for the teeming Vauxhall public. The English Concert presents a series of concerts as part of the Foundling Museums summer exhibition devoted to Vauxhall Gardens, including music from the Gardens 18th-Century heyday. The popular style of much of the music reflects the unique informality and social diversity of the Gardens clientele. This was a place where anyone who could afford the entrance price of one shilling could feel, for an evening at least, on an equal footing with royal Dukes and Duchesses, wealthy City merchants, and Georgian Londons burgeoning middle class, hungry for new social pleasures.

...the pleasures of Vauxhall, which I no sooner entered than I was dazzled and confounded with the variety of beauties that rushed all at once upon my eye. Imagine to yourself a spacious garden, laid out in delightful walks, bounded with high hedges and trees, and paved with gravel; part exhibiting a wonderful assemblage of the most picturesque and striking objects, pavilions, lodges, groves, grottos, lawns, temples, and cascades; porticoes, colonnades, and rotundas; adorned with pillars, statues, and paintings; the whole illuminated with an infinite number of lamps, disposed in different figures of suns, stars and constellations: the place crowded with the gayest company, ranging through those blissful shades, or supping in different lodges on cold collations, enlivened with mirth, freedom and good humour, and animated by an excellent band of music.

THE ENGLISH CONCERT

The English Concert is among the finest chamber orchestras in the world, with an unsurpassed reputation for inspiring performances of Baroque and Classical music in the concert hall and on CD. Created by Trevor Pinnock in 1973, The English Concert chose Harry Bicket to be its Artistic Director in 2007, and he has since led the orchestra on tours to Europe, the USA and the Middle East. Bicket is renowned internationally for his work in opera with the finest singers of the age, and English Concert collaborators in performance and recording include Ian Bostridge, Vesselina Kasarova, David Daniels, Lucy Crowe, Elizabeth Watts, Danielle de Niese, Rosemary Joshua and Sarah Connolly. Recent highlights include European and US tours with Alice Coote, Sara Mingardo and Anna Caterina Antonacci, a return to the Barbican Hall Great Performers series in London, Handels Samson at the 2009 BBC Proms with Mark Padmore in the title role, residencies at the Victoria & Albert and Handel House museums, recordings with oboist Albrecht Mayer and recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger, and the first English Concert Master Class for young harpsichordist-directors at the Foundling Museum. The English Concert and Choir toured Handels Messiah in Spain in December 2010, featuring a TV broadcast from the Palau de la Msica Barcelona, and as a chamber ensemble embarked on an extensive tour of the Canary Islands in January 2011. In October 2011 they return to the United States with Harry Bicket and countertenor Andreas Scholl, visiting

Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and New york, and from 2013-2015 Harry Bicket and The English Concert will present three Handel operas-inconcert in the USA and Europe, starting with Radamisto. In 2014 they will collaborate with the Theater an der Wien in operas by Gluck. The English Concert's discography includes more than 100 recordings with Trevor Pinnock for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv, and a series of critically acclaimed CDs for Harmonia Mundi with violinist Andrew Manze. Their first recordings with Harry Bicket Bach arias with David Daniels, Handel Duets with Rosemary Joshua and Sarah Connolly, and Bach Arias & Cantatas with Elizabeth Watts have been widely praised. Forthcoming CDs include recitals with sopranos Lucy Crowe and Danielle de Niese. The English Concert also works with distinguished guest directors, including Maurice Steger, violinist Fabio Biondi and harpsichordists Kenneth Weiss, Mahan Esfahani and Laurence Cummings, who is a regular collaborator.

MEMBERS AND GUESTS

Founded by virtuoso harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, The English Concert has always numbered among its ranks the crme de la crme of players, including violinists Simon Standage, Peter Hanson, Rachel Podger and Walter Reiter, cellists Jap ter Linden and Jan Coe, bass player Peter McCarthy, flautist Lisa Beznosiuk, recorder player Pamela Thorby, oboist David Reichenberg, bassoonist Alberto Grazzi, trumpeter Mark Bennett and timpanist Robert Howes, many of whom are still members of the orchestra in addition to being distinguished soloists and teachers. Led since 2007 by violinist Nadja Zwiener, The English Concert now includes Alfonso Leal del Ojo as principal viola, Jonathan Manson and Joseph Crouch as co-principal cello, and Katharina Spreckelsen as principal oboe. The roster of the orchestras guest solo singers over 40 years ranges from Barbara Bonney and Anne Sophie von Otter to the most current of ascendant stars. More recently the orchestra has enjoyed creative partnerships with instrumentalists including oboist Alfredo Bernardini and fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout

RECORDINGS
In the 1970s The English Concert was among world leaders in performing Baroque and Classical music on historically authentic instruments, and its international reputation has been built first and foremost on the range and quality of its discography. Early recordings of canonic works such as Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, Mozart's symphonies, Vivaldi's concertos, and Handel's Messiah remain best-selling benchmarks of interpretative authority and technical excellence, while more recent recordings have attracted no less critical acclaim. As steals the morn, a recording of Handel arias and scenes with Mark Padmore, won a 2008 BBC Magazine award, and the recent recording of Bach Cantatas & Arias with Harry Bicket and Elizabeth Watts was Editor's Choice in Gramophone Magazine. At a time when the recording of classical music has become commercially challenged, The English Concert continues to make regular and superlative recordings. In November 2011 Lucy Crowe will release her debut recital CD, Il caro Sassone, with The English Concert.
