Social Networking Sites (SBS)

SECTION ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background: A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as email and instant messaging. Online community services are sometimes considered as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service usually means an individualcentered service whereas community services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events, and interests within their individual networks

Popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com more than quadrupled from 2005 to 2009. These sites allow users to develop profiles of their backgrounds and interests, communicate with friends and strangers, and share thoughts, photos, Internet links, music, and more. Many users say the sites are good for our society, but others contend that the dangers of social media outweigh the benefits.

Proponents of social networking sites argue that these online communities promote increased communication with friends and family, familiarize people with valuable computer skills, and allow contact with people from around the world. Facebook reports approximately 90 million users in the US and 300 million active users worldwide (as of Sep. 15, 2009), MySpace reports more than 32 million US users and 130 million worldwide (as of Aug. 4, 2009), and Twitter has an estimated 54 million users worldwide (as of Oct. 13, 2009).

US advertisers spent an estimated $1.4 billion to place ads on social networking sites in 2008 and advertising expenditures are predicted to rise to $2.6 billion by 2012, indicating the rising influence of these sites in modern society. As the sites become more popular, the user base is expanding from teenagers and young adults to include more people over the age of 50.

TYPICAL STRUCTURE
1.

Basics

Social networking sites share some conventional features. Most often, individual users are encouraged to create profiles containing various information about themselves. Users can often upload pictures of themselves to their profiles, post blog entries for others to read, search for other users with similar interests, and compile and share lists of contacts. In addition, user profiles often have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users. To protect user privacy, social networks usually have controls that allow users to choose who can view their profile, contact them, add them to their list of contacts, and so on. In recent years, it has also become common for a wide variety of organizations to create profiles to advertise products and services.

2.

Additional features

Some social networks have additional features, such as the ability to create groups that share common interests or affiliations, upload or stream live videos, and hold discussions in forums. Geosocial networking co-opts Internet mapping services to organize user participation around geographic features and their attributes. There is also a trend for more interoperability between social networks led by technologies such as OpenID and OpenSocial. Lately, mobile social networking has become popular.[citation needed] In most mobile communities, mobile phone users can now create their own profiles, make friends, participate in chat rooms, create chat rooms, hold private conversations, share photos and videos, and share blogs by using their mobile phone. Some companies provide wireless services that allow their customers to build their own mobile community and brand it, but one of the most popular wireless services for social networking in North America is Facebook Mobile.

3.3) Recommendations: Following are the recommendation from the research study It's always wise to set boundaries. If you think that any information, links, photos or any other thing is not safe and secure so you should be very care full about it and try to on safe side. Our underage Youth should able to understand all Pros and cons of these websites. Introduction of new technology always attracts youth but they must be clear in their mind that what they should do with this technology. Students getting obsesses and addicted of theses websites they have to understand it and always try to put right thing in a right box. Since our youth thinks it is a good source of entertainment so there is no harm in it but use it in a right manner is very important. Man is social animal and these websites are very helpful for us to get socialize with other but we should not engage strangers in a text or video chat or adding strangers to friends list. Do not meet strangers offline. It may cause problem for us Positive thing which I found in this research is that majority of youth consider these websites good way to advertise and spread business
