Lukas and I wanted to find out if boys in 8A played more video games than girls. Everybody seems to think that boys play more video games than girls. To see if this is true, we made a survey to see if boys really did play more games than girls. To make the report fair, we asked 10 boys and 10 girls from the class. We made two separate surveys, one for boys and another for girls. We collected the data from both surveys and compared them. The data below will show the statistics of both surveys, they will also be graphed, analysed, organized and concluded to see if: Boys play more video games than girls. Play video games Yes No Sometimes Male(boys) 7 0 3 Female(girls) 8 1 1

Average hrs(hours) of video gaming per day 0-1 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-5 6+

Male (boys) 4 1 2 0 2 1

Female (girls) 2 4 3 0 0 1

This data can be organized into a frequency table so that we can find out the mean, mode, median and range of the data. We can see that most girls play video games, however we can also see from the first table that all ten boys play video games. But how do we know if the girls play more or the boys play more? To find out, I asked them another question to see the average hours of game time they have every day. The symbol y will represent the hours of video gaming per day. The symbol m will represent the frequency for males. The symbol f will represent the frequency for females.

The maximum hours of game time someone can play will be 6 hours. For the minimum hour(s) of game time, though it is actually 0 hours but that would mean that you dont play video games at all. So we are going to make the minimum 1 hour of game time per day. The range for both genders would be: 6-1= 5 Mode for male: 1 hrs Median for male: 3.5 hrs Mean for male: 2.8 hrs Mode for female: 2 hrs Median for female: 3.5 hrs Mean for female: 2.5 hrs

The data above can be seen in this table below: Mode(hrs) 1 2 Median(hrs) 3.5 3.5 Mean(hrs) 2.8 2.5

Male Female

We can see that most girls play for 2 hours whereas boys only play for 1 hour because of the mode. However, the mean shows the average of game time for the whole gender. That means that out of all of the ten boys that play video games, the average game time was 2.8 hours. Out of all of the ten girls that play video games (except 1); the average game time was 2.5 hours. This concludes that boys do play more video games than girls but just by a fraction.

20 8A Students (10 male & 10 female) on how long they play video games
4.5 4 3.5 3 Frequency 2.5 2 1.5 1 0.5 0 0-1 hrs 1-2 hrs 2-3 hrs 3-4 hrs 4-5 hrs 6+ hrs Average hours of game time per day Male Female

It can be seen that: The majority of the boys play for only one hour. (4 people) The majority of the girls play for two hours. (4 people) Not a lot of girls play for more than 3 hours of game time

By looking at this side to side column graph we can easily compare the two genders game time. A side by side column graph is easier to compare and analyse than a pie graph which is not as good in comparing the two genders. I think that a side by side column graph is the best choice to compare two variables. I think that we couldve gotten more data for example we ask 10 boys and 10 girls from each class in year 8 so that we couldve gotten more data and hopefully more accurate results. Because we wanted to make it a fair test or fair and accurate results, we surveyed 10 boys and girls in our class, luckily 8A only has 10 boys (including me and Lukas) in the class so we just picked out 10 girls from the class to also do the survey. I think that finding the average for each gender makes it really useful for answering the research question: Do boys play more video games than girls? This is because finding an average for both genders will tell you each how many hours of game time they play. The higher the average hours the more game time the total gender plays. That means 28 hours of gameplay would have a higher average time than a total gameplay of 25 hours.

In conclusion, Boys do play more video games than girls. However, the majority of the boys play for only an hour per day which is not that bad to be honest. I do really want to try this survey again by asking a wider range of people. Next time, I would like to try and survey 10 girls and boys in each class of year 8 to get more accurate results on the research question: Do boys play more video games than girls?
