Background

'Periyapatna Works', set up in 1985 by Tata Coffee, is a coffee curing unit located at in Mysore District. Periyapatna Works was established with a moderate curing capacity and over a period of time has grown with the increase in the production of coffee. Spread over 67 acres, the unit has a factory and residential areas where housing is provided for all the company employees.

The Coorg Foundation, a Public Charitable Trust established by HIGHRANGE Coffee Ltd continues to provide assistance to many Individuals and institutions in the field of Health Care, Education, Sports, Culture and Environment. In the field of Health Care, the Foundation provided grants to institutions to conduct free eye camps and treat patients belonging to the lower income group. To support higher education, the Foundation continued to provide educational scholarships to the students studying in diploma & professional courses. Merit Awards were given to students securing ranks in Kodagu District. In the field of Sports, upcoming talented youths continue to be encouraged by providing scholarships to undergo training & take part in international events. To promote and encourage culture, the foundation conducted the annual Art-in- Action programmes which provide opportunity to the rural children in the field of Drawing & Painting, Public Speaking and Bharathnatyam. In the field of environment, the Foundation provided grants to conduct awareness programme on utilization and conservation of natural resources. SWASTHA, the Project started by The Coorg Foundation, for differently abled persons continues to do well at its centres at Suntikoppa and Pollibetta. Aspinwall has been associated with coffee curing for near about a century. Beginning in a small way at Tellicherry, the company moved the curing works to Mangalore in 1950. Spread over a sprawling area of over 150, 000 sq. ft, Aspinwall Curing works stands tall reminiscent of the century old traditions. With an annual curing capacity of 10,000 tons of raw coffee and monsooning capacity of 3500 tons, the curing works is one of the very few surviving along the coastal belt. Coffee as a commodity item is traded in the form of coffee beans. It is in fact the second largest traded commodity in the world after crude oil. The berries of the coffee plant, both Arabica and Robusta are harvested and subjected to on-farm processing to extract the bean in its raw form. Based on the type of on-farm processing ( sun-drying or pulping cum washing method) , four types of raw coffee beans are traded in the market:

Raw coffee beans undergo curing process and are graded based on size of beans, type of defect and % defect imperfection better known as grades of coffee.

Infrastructural facilities
Disciplinary Action The fundamental reason for disciplinary action is to correct the situation, which are favorable to the company. These disciplinary actions are printed in standard orders of the company. A guideline has been prepared and shared with all employees. This guideline says what should and should not be done.

Medical Benefit
All workers are under the ESI (Employee State Insurance) act. Also each worker hold membership with ARC (Accident Relief care) and the premium is paid by the company every year.

The retirement age for all employees in the company is 58 years where the employee would be benefited with Provident Fund, Gratuity. The employees also have an option of VRS (Voluntary Retirement Schemes).

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
The production department is the most important organ of the organization without which the company does not exist. These department not only employs largest number of workers but also coordinates the. The production process starts with the issue of manufacturing papers i.e., drawing operational layout is studied by the superiors and if any clarification required they contact production planning and then progress. Improve the technology for the sake of growth in production. Sales promotion and advertizing should be given equal importance in marketing, advertizing and sales promotion to be carried out at industrial level.

The latest and modern sophisticated safely measured should be adopted. High encouragement should be given when employees face any new& challenging responsibility.

They have to implement the management information system (MIS) for the benefit of organization. (Such as internet and website).

Arrangements of study visits can make employee to work better because there would be change of environment

The organization study was conducted for various departments in HIGH RANGE COFFEE CURING This lasted for the duration of 4 weeks. The executive were highly co-operative in sharing various functions of the concerned departments all the data collected through question & answer session.

The organizational study helped us to relate our theoretical knowledge with practical scenario in the organization & infrastructures was a kind of encouragement during my project.
