ENIAC and EDVAC

ENIAC - The title of forefather of today's all-electronic digital computers is usually awarded to ENIAC, which stood for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator ENIAC was built at the University of Pennsylvania between 1943 and 1945 by two professors, John Mauchly and the 24 year old J. Presper Eckert, ENIAC filled a 20 by 40 foot room, weighed 30 tons, and used more than 18,000 vacuum tubes. Each vacuum tubes generated waste heat like a light bulb and all this heat (174,000 watts of heat) meant that the computer could only be operated in a specially designed room with its own heavy duty air conditioning system. To reprogram the ENIAC you had to rearrange the patch cords EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer) was one of the earliest electronic computers. Unlike its predecessor the ENIAC, it was binary rather than decimal, and was a stored program machine. The ENIAC designers Eckert & Mauchly were joined by John von Neumann and some others The computer had almost 6,000 vacuum tubes and 12,000 diodes, and consumed 56 kW of power. It covered 490 ft (45.5 m) of floor space and weighed 17,300 lb (7,850 kg). VLSI (very large-scale integration) is the current level of computer microchip miniaturization and refers to microchips containing in the hundreds of thousands of transistor s. LSI (large-scale integration) meant microchips containing thousands of transistors. Earlier, MSI (mediumscale integration) meant a microchip containing hundreds of transistors and SSI (small-scale integration) meant transistors in the tens.

toys. While von Neumann is most often credited with the design of the stored-program computer because of his design of EDVAC, others before him such as Konrad Zuse had suggested similar ideas. Additionally, the so-called Harvard architecture of the Harvard Mark I, which was completed before EDVAC, also utilized a stored-program design using punched paper tape rather than electronic memory. The key omitted so the machine could be finished sooner. On June 30, 1945, before ENIAC was even completed, mathematician John von Neumann distributed the paper entitled "First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC to the advent of machines that resemble todays CPUs, computers such as the ENIAC had to be physically rewired in order to perform different tasks. These machines are often referred to as "

What is CPU
. Significantly, the programs written for EDVAC were stored in highspeed computer memory rather than specified by the physical wiring of the computer. This overcame a severe limitation of ENIAC, which such as the ENIAC had to be physically rewired in order to perform different tasks. These machines are often referred to as fixed-program computers, since they had to be physically reconfigured in order to run a
