GLOBAL WARMING Global warming is one of the major environmental issues facing the world today.

Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. An increase in the temperature of the Earth’s surface may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. One cause for Global Warming is called the Greenhouse Effect. THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT The term greenhouse is used in conjunction with the phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. The Greenhouse Effect results from a four step process.  First, sunlight radiates from the sun, through space, to Earth's atmosphere.  Second, the sunlight enters the atmosphere and hits Earth. Some of it turns into heat energy in the form of infrared light. The heat is absorbed by surrounding air and land, which in turn makes it warm.  Third, infrared rays, which are remitted into the atmosphere, are trapped by greenhouse gases.  Finally, the gas then absorbs the light and is remitted back to the Earth's surface and warms it even more. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include: Water vapor: The most abundant greenhouse gas, but importantly, it acts as a feedback to the climate. Water vapor increases as the Earth's atmosphere warms, but so does the possibility of clouds and precipitation, making these some of the most important feedback mechanisms to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide (CO2): A minor but very important component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels. Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived forcing of climate change. Methane: A hydrocarbon gas produced both through natural sources and human activities, including the decomposition of wastes in landfills, agriculture, and especially rice cultivation, as well as ruminant digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock. On a molecule-for-molecule basis, methane is a far more active greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but also one which is much less abundant in the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide: A powerful greenhouse gas produced by soil cultivation practices, especially the use of commercial and organic fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion, nitric acid production, and biomass burning. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Synthetic compounds of entirely of industrial origin used in a number of applications, but now largely regulated in production and release to

gravely endangering coral reefs. The rise will probably be so gradual that later generations can simply abandon their parents' homes. especially in the Arctic. mortality will rise and food supplies will be endangered due to more frequent and extreme summer heat waves and other effects. Changes in precipitation will affect basic necessities such as agriculture. Weather patterns will keep changing toward an intensified water cycle with stronger floods and droughts. The temperature change will benefit some regions while harming others — for example. Some places will get more snowstorms. Each of these things has already begun to happen in some regions. the sea level was at least 6 meters (20 feet) higher. The warmer winters will improve health and agriculture in some areas. and tropical seas. storms with more intense rainfall are liable to bring worse floods. They are also greenhouse gases. will lead to heavy human casualties. hot conditions. Meanwhile storm surges will cause emergencies. The oceans will continue to become markedly more acidic. mountain areas. These problems have already been observed in numerous places. Regions not directly harmed will suffer indirectly from higher food prices and a press of refugees from afflicted regions. patterns of tourism will shift. Some crops will be fertilized. Increase in the temperature of ocean waters will hamper fisheries. The sudden change in climate patterns will have a hazardous effect on the human body which won't be able to endure the extreme conditions. Global Warming and Humans In case of humans. but globally. Extreme weather events will become more frequent and worse. global warming will affect our food and water supplies as well as our health conditions. and probably harming fisheries and other marine life. and most wet regions will get wetter. A variety of pests and tropical diseases are expected to spread to warmed regions. but a ruinously swift rise cannot be entirely ruled out. Ecosystems will be stressed. The last time the planet was 3°C warmer than now. IMPACTS OF GLOBAL WARMING The following are the likely consequences of global warming: Most places will continue to get warmer. In particular. must shift their ranges. a hint of which can be seen in form of frequent heat waves and cold waves. as will some invasive weeds. Increase in natural calamities such as storms. at least in the early decades of warming. That submerged coastlines where many millions of people now live. power production etc. Infectious diseases will rise to a great extent as disease transmitting insects will adapt to wet. . Uncounted valuable species. especially at night and in winter. Increased carbon dioxide levels will affect biological systems independent of climate change.the atmosphere by international agreement for their ability to contribute to destruction of the ozone layer. including cities from New York to Shanghai. but most mountain glaciers and winter snow pack will shrink. although some managed agricultural and forestry systems will benefit. Most regions now subject to droughts will probably get drier (because of warmth as well as less precipitation). jeopardizing important water supply systems. Many that cannot will face extinction. Sea levels will continue to rise for many centuries.

Air dried clothes help minimize the loss energy as well. Proper inflation of tires should be done and fuel wastage should be avoided. Thermostat should be used for air conditioners since it reduces the temperature automatically. a green house gas instead of oxygen. food preparation with the help of sunlight. Teach your neighborhood and friends about the cause and impacts of global warming and methods to reduce it. Also. The electric appliances should be switched off instead to hold it in stand by mode. Cows emit a large amount of methane due to their vegetarian diet. People should reduce the usage of electrical appliances which emits green house gases.e. Use green power. Usage of green power prevents 300 kg of carbon dioxide to be emitted into the atmosphere. save a lot of energy when cooking. Insulation of the ceiling of a house and power saving is the important factor to reduce global warming. vegetable dump undergoes anaerobic decomposition i. Grow trees. people should understand the problem and take measures accordingly to save the world. Also tetra packs should be used instead of tinned food. This will save more power since stand by mode consumes 40% of the energy. This can be replaced by a compact fluorescent light bulb which saves much energy. Cover cooking utensils when cooking. People should not dump waste products on the ground. the refrigerator releases chlorofluro carbon (CFC) and the incandescent light lamp emits 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Do not use dryers whenever possible as it will help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. existing forests should be saved and usage of plant byproducts shouldn’t be wasted. During this process. The cost is also low in case of green power. trees absorb carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. The electricity obtained from the renewable resources like wind and water is called green power. they break down to produce methane. Periodic maintenance of the vehicles helps in efficient usage of fuel and reduces release of green house gases. SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL WARMING There are many easy solutions to reduce global warming and its impact. Reuse. Buying local food reduces the consumption of fuel. Hence the product usage and wastage should be reduced or recycled for a healthy atmosphere. Plant products.g. People should use only energy-efficient appliances. Consumption of organic food should be increased because organic soil absorb large amount of carbon dioxide. Hence meat consumption should be reduced. Dry clothes on a clothes line only. Follow RRR . food waste. Many people will die of malnutrition as food production will decrease due to frequent droughts and floods. Many trees should be planted since they involve in photosynthesis.Reduce. Conservation of forests also forms a factor to reduce global . First of all. We should use more of pressure cookers and steamers as they help save energy up to 70% when cooking. Recycle. Trees absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide. For e. Covering food when cooking helps to reduce the loss heat and thus.

destroying plant. Plant more trees and reduce the amount of paper used at homes and offices. floods and other natural disasters will plague the earth causing widespread destruction. animal and human life gradually. Global warming will cause earth to lose it protective covering that is. make sure we do our bit to prevent global warming.warming. every paper wasted. thus. means 5 trees cut for nothing! Hence. If we do not wish to lose this beautiful planet to doom. the atmosphere. individuals and government should be concerned about the environment and stop the incoming danger due to global warming. it will allow harmful radiation from the sun to penetrate into earth. Hurricanes. If the atmosphere is lost. Remember. .
