COMMENTS:

GOOD PRODUCT! EXCELLENT VARIETY OF OVERALL CONTENT AND STORIES. EDITING APPEARS SOLID. THESE ARE LARGE NEWSPAPERS FOR A CC, BUT THEY DON’T DULL DOWN AS THE PAGES PASS – A CREDIT TO THE STAFF. LAYOUT AND DESIGN MAKES GOOD STORIES AND PHOTOS ON THESE PAGES “SNAP.” LIKE WHAT I SEE.

OCT 26, 2011 – LOVED TREATMENT OF SUPERNATURAL MICHIGAN, CIDER MILL, FEATURED ARTIST, FIVE DECADES, A&E, FRIDAY NIGHT RENTALS AND GOING PINK.

GOOD SOLID INDEPTH PIECES ON REPEALED, OUT OF BALANCE AND BRIDGE TOO FAR. GOOD VARIETY OF OPINION. HATS OFF TO SPORTS PHOTOS – PLENTY OF QUALITY THERE.

NOV 7 2011 – JUST A SIDE NOTE HERE: YOU ARE RECEIVING A QUALITY PRINT JOB. EVEN THE ADS JUMP OFF THE PAGES AT TIMES. EXCELLENT DEBATE ON BRIDGE TO CANADA. LIKED THE SIDEBARS ON POLITICAL GRUDGE MATCHES. A NICE TOUCH.

N0V 21, 2011 – NOTE TO EDITOR KING: VERY NICE JOB OF RESPONDING TO THE PROFESSOR’S LETTER QUESTIONING THE TREATMENT OF A PHOTO IN A PREVIOUS EDITION. PROFESSIONALLY DONE – AND I LOVED THE TRANSPARENCY. NOTHING TO HIDE FROM THE READERS.

VISIT TO THE COMPOST FARM WAS A INTERESTING READ … BEAUTIFUL DOUBLE-TRUCK ON SPORTS GRADS AT THE CC. LIKED FRIDAY NIGHT RENTALS (AGAIN) ON JOHNNY DEPP, BUT WHERE WAS DONNIE BRASCO? AGAIN, SOME VERY GOOD SPORTS PHOTOS, ESPECIALLY THE DUNK THAT LEADS OFF THE SPORTS PAGES.

SOME DRAWBACKS AND TIPS: REMEMBER, USE SINGLE QUOTES IN HEADLINES. HEADLINE WRITING OFTEN COMES UP FAR TOO SHORT – WRITE YOUR HEADS TO THE MARGINS. PRINTING TEXT ON IMAGES AND/OR COLOR TONE IS TRICKY. AT TIMES, YOU’RE OVERDOING THE TONE (TONING THE ENTIRE CAMPUS CRIME PAGE?). REMEMBER, YOU CAN USE A GOOD THING TOO MUCH …

OVERALL, A FINE PRODUCT!

Please write comments below; they will be used in the awards presentation. Please be as specific as possible. Consider the strengths of the newspaper, its weaknesses and include any suggestions for improvement.

NOTE: This review is based on one edition (Nov. 21, 2011).

1. This is an outstanding campus newspaper. It looks great and gives the reader a sense of what Schoolcraft College and its students are all about. You have an expansive news hole (almost unheard of today) and plenty of advertising. There is a little bit for everyone in this publication. Lots of planning and effort go into this paper.

2. You make a decent attempt at editorial/commentary pages, but in the edition I saw, there is no editorial. Why? Every newspaper must have a strong editorial presence.

3. There are too many first-person “stories.” Content using “I” should be on the commentary pages or in columns, and even at that the use of “I” should be used sparingly. It’s a crutch to real writing.

4. There seems to be a lack of hard news in the paper. Do the trustees and administration do anything? Much of the content has a feature approach, and you missed occasions to “localize” stories to the campus (examples: Obama and student loans, Julia Ward Act, Google, etc).
