The Smoke that Thunders, or MosiOa-Tunya, as the Victoria Falls is known to the locals.
The Falls and the surrounding area have been declared National Parks and a World Heritage Site, thus preserving the area from excessive commercialisation. The Falls are spectacular throughout the year on the Zimbabwean side, but February onwards, after the rainy season, has the heaviest flow and volume of spray, which can be seen up to 2km away. Just one visit to the Victoria Falls and you will see why the name is so apt. At 1 708 meters wide, the Victoria Falls is also the widest curtain of falling water in the world. It is easy to see why the Victoria Falls is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Hwange National Park is one of Africa's finest havens for wildlife and is home to vast herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra. There are large concentrations of giraffe and many predators,

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
The best time to travel to Victoria Falls is between April and October, when the daytime temperatures are not too harsh. November is known as “suicide month” due to the very high temperatures. It is also the time of very low water, so not the best time to view the Victoria Falls. December to March is the rainy season and it is also very hot during this period.

Bottle of Wine (imported) US$32 US$42 Beer US$3 Bottle of Water US$4 Coffee / Tea US$3 Cold Drinks US$3 Toasted Sandwich US$11 Dinner BEST TIME TO TRAVEL at Hotel US$35 The best time to travel to Zambia and the Falls would be between April and October, when the daytime temperatures are not too harsh. November is known as “suicide month” due to the very high temperatures. During this time the water on the Zambian side of the Falls almost completely dries up, but visitors can still view the Falls from the Zimbabwean side. December to March is the rainy season and it is also very hot during this period.

“The first impression was unmistakable; immense power, the raw energy unleashed when the entire Zambezi leaps wildly into a black two kilometre wide abyss. The scale is massive, the
spectacle spellbinding and perpetually changing. The Falls hiss and roar as if possessed, they rumble and crash like thunder. Vast clouds spew and billow out from the seething cauldron of its dark impenetrable depths. The moving water creates a magnetism that sucks you closer, so that you recoil in horror to quench a subliminal sacrificial urge.” (Jumbo Williams, Zambezi, River of Africa. 1988) What will your first impression of the Victoria Falls be? We guarantee that you will be awe-struck by the whole Thompsons Victoria Falls experience. African Queen Luxury Cruises
A cruise on the African Queen is an unforgettable experience that will take you back in time to an era where time stood still. On arrival at the Royal Landing, you are greeted with a cold cocktail and the sounds of the Marimba Band, a local instrument that laments the sounds of Africa. Full bars on both upper and lower decks serve a selection of cocktails and iced drinks, while our on board galley will provide you with freshly prepared hot and cold snacks.

Helicopter Flips
A helicopter flight over the Falls is the perfect way to orientate yourself to the area as well as giving you a birdseye view of the Falls. There are 2 options available to you; the 15-minute flight and a 30-minute flight. A 15-minute flight will take you over the Falls and the Zambezi River. A 30-minute flight will take you over the Falls, the Batoka Gorge, the Zambezi River and the Mosi-oaTunya National Park.

Elephant Back Safaris
Within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the banks of the Zambezi River our six African Elephants Malinda, Mushumbi, Marula, Lewa, Danny and Bop each offer two guests an unparalleled viewpoint of the mighty Zambezi River. Guests ride with their guides on an exclusive Zambian Elephant Safari through riverine vegetation and beautiful scenery.

Livingstone Quads
The various quad bike trails start from Batoka Land, in Livingstone. After the check-in formalities one of the qualified guides will take you on the training track before departure onto your chosen route. The routes have all been designed for you to optimise your experience in the virgin African bush. No previous experience is required and the trails are conducted at a leisurely pace that suits our clients.

Bungi Jump
Have you ever considered leaving the confines of your mind? African Extreme and Thompsons Zambia operate Bungi jumping 365 days a year from the Victoria Falls Bridge, which spans the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia, at a height of 111 metres. As the jumpers descend into the Batoka Gorge, they see the Zambezi rushing up to meet them, only to stop short (about 10m) for a complete reversal of their downward journey - the rebound! Passports required.

White Water Rafting
This one-day trip runs yearround, subject to river levels. The popularity of the Low Water Rafting adventure on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River is due to the opportunity for experiencing the incredible views of the Victoria Falls from the Boiling Pot. A qualified professional oarsman ensures that the “Float of Angels” is a truly breathtaking and memorable start to your white water rafting adventure. Please note that the climb out the gorge is quite strenuous and a fair level of fitness is required.

Livingstone Island
Livingstone Island can most certainly be classed as one of the most awesome picnic spots in the world and is certainly worth a visit. From August to December guests can swim in the rock pool on the edge of the Falls and it is recommended that you bring swimming gear. Choose from a morning tour, lunch tour or a tea tour to Livingstone Island. The tours will operate all year round and may only be cancelled due to very heavy storms. An experience on the very edge of the Falls not to be missed.

Canoeing
What better way to discover the peace and tranquillity of the Zambezi than in a two-person fibreglass canoe? View game and various species of birdlife as you glide along this mighty river. There are 5 hour half-day safaris that begin in the morning and a full day safari lasts 9 hours.

woodland of the Tuli Block, there is a wide variety of wildlife in Botswana. However, it is in the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve that visitors will find unforgettable beauty. In the lush, indigenous forests and along the floodplains, more than 400 species of birds flourish. On the mainland and among the islands of the Delta, lions, elephants, hyenas, wild dog, buffalo, hippo and crocodiles congregate with a teeming variety of antelope and other small animals. The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square km, has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. Its uniqueness in the abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region, offers a safari experience of a lifetime. A major feature of Chobe National Park is its elephant population currently estimated at around 120,000. One of the most spectacular scenes is watching a family of elephants cross the Chobe River at sunset. Chobe is only an hour’s drive from Victoria Falls and Livingstone and is therefore the perfect holiday package combination. Botswana offers a truly African experience untouched by the more destructive pressures of encroaching civilisation, presenting a wonderful wilderness for the enjoyment of all who seek to reach just that little bit further into Africa.

Botswana is one of the finest tourist destinations on the African continent.
The Okavango, which originates in the uplands of Angola, flows into and spreads over the sandy spaces of the Kalahari to form an immense and wondrous inland delta of lagoon and labyrinthine channel, palm-fringed island and fertile floodplain. A number of safari lodges and camps have been established in and around this watery wilderness. This wilderness and the nearby game-rich Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, offer visitors the best of several worlds, appealing to the game-viewer and bird-watcher, the hunter and the sporting fisherman, the explorer of hidden places and the lover of Africa in its loveliest and least spoilt state. From the calcrete floors and ancient baobabs of the Makgadikgadi Pans to the savannah grasslands of the Chobe National Park and the mophane

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
November to March is the rainy season and is also known as the “Green Season”. Showers are usually only experienced in the late afternoon and do not last long. Very high temperatures can be experienced during the “Green Season”. Rates during the “Green Season” drop considerably making this an opportune time to go. The best time to visit Botswana would be from April to October when the temperatures are bearable and the Delta is in flood.

Botswana - Okavango, Linyanti & Savute

The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta on earth. Instead of flowing into the sea, the annual flood of fresh water flows inland, spreading over 15 000km² of the Kalahari sand in a maze of lagoons and channels. The delta is at its most impressive in August when the champagne-coloured water is at its deepest. Most of the animals’ young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush. Experience the waters and get close to the game of the Delta by taking a makoro trip in some of the channels. Your experienced poler will guide you around lazy, but vigilant hippos, and you can immerse yourself in the beauty and the wildness of the Okavango.

Often described as one of, if not the best, wildlife-viewing area in Africa today. Savute boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife left on the African continent. Animals are present during all seasons, and at certain times of the year their numbers can be staggering. If you allow yourself adequate time here (a minimum of three to four days is recommended) you will probably see nearly all the major species. Savute is famous for its predators, particularly its resident lions and spotted hyena populations. You may even be lucky enough to see the endangered wild dog.

Typical Day on Safari
The dawn of a new day and the bush is coming to life. Baboons scream a warning as they sense a predator close by. Fish Eagles utter their eerie cry as they skim the waters for breakfast. Somewhere in the wilderness a lion roars, greeting the new day. Hippos grunt their pleasure as they splash back into their watery sanctuaries. At camp the African drums are thumping their wake-up call and inviting you to be a part of the magic that is the African bush. • Early morning wake-up with tea and coffee • Light breakfast of cereal and fruit • Morning game drive with coffee in the bush • Return to camp for brunch • Afternoon tea with cakes and savouries • Afternoon game drive with sundowners • Dinner in camp... ...its a hard life, but someone’s gotta do it!

Wilderness Property Gradings
Wilderness Safaris Camps consist of Premier & Classic Camps. Premier Camps: This is the highest level of camp in their portfolio and comprises their most elegant and stylised accommodation. Classic Camps: The Classic camps are generally tented camps, although a few are lodges built from permanent structures. All these camps offer superb facilities and accommodation, the bedrooms being slightly smaller than those of their Premier camps. Their camps are then graded on the Paw Grading system. 6 Paw: This is the highest level and is equivalent to a 5-star deluxe grading 5+ Paw: This is one level below 6 Paw and is considered equivalent to a 5-star grading

Linyanti
On the southern banks of the Linyanti River is the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. Here the marsh subsides into lagoons and steadily flowing rivers with riverine forests of Jackal Berry and Sausage trees leading to open grasslands, and dry inland wooded areas. The wildlife is plentiful, especially in the dry winter months (April – October) when great concentrations of elephant, buffalo

Namibia is located in southwest Africa. It is a large and mainly arid country sharing borders with Angola to the north, Botswana to the east, South Africa to the south and, in the Caprivi Strip, a narrow panhandle of Namibian territory jutting from the northeast corner of the country, with Zambia and Zimbabwe.
With 15 000 inhabitants, Namibia’s capital of Windhoek is the biggest city in the country. The attractive town lies at an altitude of 1650m in a beautiful valley bordered by the Eros Mountains in the north and the Auas mountains in the south. Towards the west, stretches the Khomas Highland to the Namib and the coast. Swakopmund, also known as the “summer capital” and is Namibia’s second-biggest town. Offering a fascinating mix of European architecture and culture, Swakopmund is a very popular tourist destination. Tourists can indulge in a diverse range of activities from sand-boarding, quad-biking and camel rides to 4x4 trips, boat rides and fishing. Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan surrounded by giant sand dunes. Situated in the heart of the Namib Desert, it truly is one of Namibia’s top tourist destinations. Some of these sand dunes reach a world-record height of 300m. The clay pan fills with water on the rare occasions of heavy rainfall, when guests are treated to the spectacle of a beautiful turquoise lake. The Sossusvlei dunes are found in the Namib Naukluft Park; the biggest conservation site in Africa and the fourth-biggest in the world.

Namibia

The Etosha National Park is one of the most impressive game reserves in the southern hemisphere. Covering an area of 22 270 km2 , the Etosha National Park boasts 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species, and believe it or not, one species of fish! Etosha, which means ‘great white place’, features a gigantic mineral pan which was formed 1000 million years ago. No African holiday is complete without a visit to the Etosha National Park. The Fish River Canyon features an enormous gorge that meanders along a distance of approximately 160km. Visitors come from all over the world to experience this breathtaking tourist attraction Damaraland has no fences, no boundaries in the vast, stony desert landscape. Just endless vistas across stark plains, ancient valleys and brooding, distant mountains which bring the traveller as close to nature as is comfortably possible. Here, the plants and animals have evolved side by side with their environment over millennia and unusual geological features, a wealth of rock paintings and engravings, and populations of desert-adapted elephant and rhino, combine to form the unique attraction of Damaraland. Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, a narrow piece of land approximately 400km long, is one of the country’s top tourist attractions.

Dune Desert Tour
4 - 5 hour tour. Minimum: 2 people This half-day tour departs from Swakopmund at 08h00. The tour concentrates on exploring the local dune belt between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Special care is taken not to damage the gravel plains and cause unnecessary damage to the dune eco system. Your guide will stop continuously to look for tracks (known locally as reading the bushman newspaper), to determine which animals were active the previous night and wherever possible will try to catch some of them to show you.

Lie Down Sandboarding

Our most popular tour as real adventure starts here for the ride of your life. We ride the wildest dunes, roller coasters and spirals of the Namib. Excellent photographic opportunities. Adrenaline guaranteed. Cold drinks included.

No experience necessary. The sand boarder lies on their stomach shooting head first down the dune. After a brief instruction period we head up the dune for our first ride which we call Little Nellie. From there we move to the second “training” ride called the Birgit Run. This ride is longer, steeper and faster than the first. Lizzie is the first of the real rides and the third ride on the dune. Speeds up to 60 kph (37 mph) can be achieved. This ride also offers excellent photo opportunities.

make their way across the Serengeti in their annual migration between Kenya and Tanzania. Marvel at the Eden-like Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest unbroken caldera or discover the mystery of our ancestors at Olduvai Gorge. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact caldera in the world, and some scientists maintain that, before it erupted, it would have been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa. The Crater is situated in a Conservation Area, where wildlife is protected and the Masai herdsmen graze their cattle side by side with predators and prey. Lake Manyara National Park is one of the most diverse of Tanzania’s national parks, a tiny combination of Rift Valley soda lake, dense woodlands and steep mountainside. The Park was established specifically to protect the elephant herds that have made the area world-renowned. The people of Tanzania will welcome you with a hearty “Jambo” and a warm smile that will touch your heart.

The Migration

The Great Migration

The Migratory Path
One and a half million wildebeest and 200 000 zebra and gazelles gather for the annual migration from the vast Serengeti plains to the champagne hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara. These animals are relentlessly tracked by predators as they migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1 800 miles each year in search of rain-ripened grass.

July, August & September
Countless herds congregate along the swollen Mara River, the final barrier cutting them off from the sweet grass of the Masai Mara. They search for a shallow crossing place in an effort to cross safely. However, some get caught up in the deeper, fast running waters and drown while others may be attacked by crocodile who lie in wait.

October & November
The arrival of the short summer rain calls the herds to begin their migration south. As November ends the migration makes its way back to the southern Serengeti and they once again give birth.

The Migration

December, January, February & March
The Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation area is arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. During the period December through March the Conservation area is inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. This is the calving season and the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei Plains and thus attract the attention of lions, cheetah and hyena.

April, May & June
Depleted plains are no longer able to sustain the huge herds. The migration moves from the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation area to the long grass of the Serengeti’s western corridor almost to Lake Victoria.

Websites showing the path of the Great Migration: www.wildwatch.com, This is a CC Africa initiative and shows the location of the migration at the time of logging in. Remember: This is a migration that is controlled by nature and of course weather pattern, so the timing can vary from month to month and from year to year

We act as booking agents for the suppliers of the component parts of the holiday we organise, and as such, bookings for their services will form a direct contract between you and the relevant supplier, and will be subject to that supplier’s standard terms and conditions. Bookings Bookings save for late bookings as referred to hereunder, are confirmed on the condition that a non-refundable deposit, of a minimum of 25% of the total package price, is paid to Thompsons within 72 hours of confirmation of your bookings. You will be advised at the time of booking what payment is required for your particular arrangements. The balance of the cost of your travel arrangements must be paid no less than six weeks prior to departure. If your booking is made within 6 weeks of departure, the total cost of your travel arrangements must be paid at the time of booking. Please note: FAILURE TO PAY ON TIME WILL RESULT IN THE AUTOMATIC CANCELLATION OF YOUR BOOKING. Late Booking Fee & Communication Expenses (Telephone Calls) In the event of a booking (except South Africa bookings) being made less than 7 days prior to the date of departure, Thompsons reserves the right to charge for any extra communication expenses. Full payment is due immediately on confirmation and is non-refundable on all late bookings. Some bookings require full payment at the time of booking i.e. prior to confirmation. If we are unable to secure confirmation you will be refunded in full. Price Changes The costs associated with travel arrangements are not always stable, and currency movements can fluctuate sharply. It is impossible to predict these movements in advance. When you book a package through us, we reserve the right to pass on any surcharges to you. Surcharges may be imposed to cover increases in transportation costs, including the costs of fuel and security charges, taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports and airports, or exchange rates applied to the particular package. Thompsons guarantees the price of land arrangements, only once full payment is received. Airfares are subject to the prices and conditions quoted by the particular airlines and cannot be guaranteed by Thompsons. Should any client refuse to accept and pay such surcharge, it may result in cancellation of the booking and forfeiture of all payments made. Methods of Payment Credit Cards: In accordance with International Airline Travel Association (IATA) bulletin # A1/00 we need a signed and validated Standard Credit Card Charge Form. Thompsons will not be responsible or liable if the client fails to take adequate insurance cover or at all. It shall not be obligatory upon Thompsons to effect insurance for the client except upon detailed instructions given in writing and all insurance effected by Thompsons pursuant to such instruction will be subject to such exceptions and conditions as may be imposed by the insurance company or the underwriters accepting the risk, and Thompsons shall not be obliged to obtain separate cover for any risks so excluded. Should the insurers dispute their liability for any reason, the client will have recourse against the insurers only. Once the insurance has been confirmed and paid for, the client will be issued with a policy document of the insurer. It is a complex document, which must be READ BEFORE you initiate your travel so that you can address any queries you may have to the insurer PRIOR to your departure. Please note that various credit card companies offer limited levels of travel insurance, which Thompsons does not consider sufficient cover for international travel. Kindly check with the respective credit card companies in order to obtain specific details of the cover. Any monies, which you have already paid to us, will be taken by us as payment or part payment of any cancellation charges. Our Right to Change Your Travel Arrangements A significant change to your travel arrangements would include a change in the departure date from South Africa; where the flight times are changed by more than 12 hours or a change to a lower standard of accommodation to that which is booked. In these instances of significant changes to your travel arrangements Thompsons undertakes to advise you thereof as soon as reasonably possible before your departure date to obtain your further instructions in this regard. All other changes are minor changes. A minor change can be made at any time and, if practicable, we will advise you of any such change prior to departure but we are not obliged to do so.
