In my past postings I have talk about two different types of eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia.

However, when I have yet to really delve in depth how harmful these activities are. People with anorexia are 18 times more likely to die early says the national institute of mental health. The fear of gaining weight is so extreme that measures taken to prevent weight gain are severe. Food is needed for various reason one it helps the body recover from daily stress and replenishes the bodys nutrients. Every persons body is different and needs different amounts so that means that model you see on TV may eat and look differently than you do. That doesnt mean necessarily that you are overweight or underweight. Height and body type and sometimes ethnicity background play a big part in how you develop. However many do not take this into consideration. The way that anorexia effects the body is listed below curtosy of the nation menal health website.

Thinning of the bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis) Brittle hair and nails Dry and yellowish skin Growth of fine hair all over the body (lanugo) Mild anemia and muscle wasting and weakness Severe constipation Low blood pressure, slowed breathing and pulse Damage to the structure and function of the heart Brain damage Multiorgan failure Drop in internal body temperature, causing a person to feel cold all the time Lethargy, sluggishness, or feeling tired all the time Infertility.

Long term continuation of this as you could imagine can cause some serious health issues. Bulimia is more so the opposite of anorexia. A person eats generally large amounts of food and then feels some sort of guilt and then purges. The effects of this purging from vomit causes erosion of the esophagus and lining of the stomach.

Chronically inflamed and sore throat Swollen salivary glands in the neck and jaw area Worn tooth enamel, increasingly sensitive and decaying teeth as a result of exposure to stomach acid Acid reflux disorder and other gastrointestinal problems Intestinal distress and irritation from laxative abuse Severe dehydration from purging of fluids Electrolyte imbalance (too low or too high levels of sodium, calcium, potassium and other minerals) which can lead to heart attack.

Even though people may suffer from these disease there are plenty of people out there willing to help and willing to talk to you. I recently was a part of movement here in Charlotte called the NEDA walk we helped raise money to send a young woman to get the help she needed. Because

eating disorders are linked to psychologically its messes with people mentally causing some to have low self-esteem, self-image and even self-worth. To some this may seem trivial. But feeling this type of way can cause depression and thoughts of suicide.
