What is Yammer? Yammer is a communication tool for organizations. you post and respond to colleagues’ messages You see messages from the people, groups, and tags that you follow Yammer networks are private. A valid company email address is required to join. For example, members of the YourOrg network need an @yourorg.org email address. External Yammer networks can be set-up for groups of colleagues in different organisations Profile - Add details about yourself and your work background to help others in communicating with you. Update your picture by clicking on your name in the top right corner, then choosing 'Edit Account'. The first option is for changing your picture. Add a short 'bio' and any details relevant to this network in the 'Profile' tab. Optionally add in details of your Work and Education history Yammer Messages (Yams) To post a message, type it in the ‘Share an Update’ box then press enter Yammer messages can also be Questions, Events or Polls When posting or replying to a message you can add a file, picture or video by clicking on 'File' by the paperclip and choosing a file from your computer Your followers will see your Yams There are two ways to send a Yam to a specific person and be sure that they will see it: ◦ @address the person (Yam is visible to anyone within your network): Anywhere in your message, type the "@" symbol followed by their name or username and Yammer will make suggestions as you type. ◦ Direct Message the person (Private, not visible by others): At the start of the message, type to:username (These will be visible in the 'Private Messages' tab on main screen) Like - If you want to show appreciation for messages posted by others click the 'Like' button next to a message. Topics – a great way to organise messages around subjects and make groups of messages about that topic findable. When adding a new message click “More” and add a topic, or add your new message to an existing topic To find all messages relating to a topic, type the topic into the search box at the top of the screen. You can choose to follow a topic to be kept up to date as others add more posts about it Feeds are a stream of related messages shown in the centre of the screen. You can view the following feeds: Top - shows the most relevant messages from across the network based on your viewing history All - all non-private messages from everyone across your network Following - messages from people you’re following and groups you’re in To see messages addressed to you or private Direct Messages go to your ‘Inbox’ (under Home) Bookmarked - To see any messages you have marked as a favorite to look at later, go to your profile, then under the ‘More’ tab you can select ‘Bookmarks’ Groups can be set up by any network member for their area of interest or work They are an effective way of keeping discussions related a topic out of the main timeline for those not working on that topic. You will only see it’s activity if you choose to become a member. Groups can be open or private and can require administrator permission to allow access or none Files and notes can be shared and discussed in the group Groups may be used for long term policy or locality based discussions or as short term task & finish spaces Following You can follow files, people and topics. When you follow people you will see their messages in your Yammer feed. Similarly, you will see all messages with topics you follow or files you are watching. To follow a person, go to the “Members” directory & click the follow button next to their name & picture. To follow a tag, click on the tag when it appears in your feed, then click the follow button
Attachments and Files Upload, Share and access your files from any computer with your home or external network New versions of files automatically update all conversations and links to the file with latest version 'Follow' a file to receive a notification whenever a new version is uploaded or it is discussed Attach a file to pages or conversations by uploading from your hard drive or from the File Directory Easily revert back to previous versions of files if needed or delete when they are no longer needed Search the contents of uploaded files To attach a file to a message, click "Attach File" and choose the file you would like to attach ◦ All file attachments or images are accessible in “Content” > “Files” or “Images” ◦ Any file or image you’ve previously attached can be downloaded by any member of your network Polls and Events are additional types of update you can create when sending a new message Use a Poll to ask your network members a simple multiple choice question as part of your update Set up an event as a date based update. Invite attendees and attach meeting agendas, minutes & reports Notes are collaborative working spaces where group members can work on documents with others by invitation Content appears character-by-character in real time colour coded by contributor Edit without worrying that content will be lost; drafts are automatically saved Include links to files, user profiles, external sites, or other pages or other Yammer conversations Create a note in a public group to allow anyone in your home network to view & edit; create a note in a private group to restrict the note to members only Discover notes in the Activity Stream Ticker, through text search, in pages tab of a group, or Files Directory Publish your note to create a new version and notify followers that updates have been made Follow a note to receive notifications when new versions published, or when conversations reference it Tags are a useful way to organize and find Yams. Tags look like "#example”. Once you post your Yam, your tag becomes a link to all Yams with that tag To follow a tag, click on the tag when it appears in your feed, then click the follow button Search - using Yammer’s search, you can find messages, people, groups and tags The search results page features an advanced search function that allows you to further refine your search Applications You can follow Yammer on a mobile phone (Android, Blackberry, Windows & iPhone) by downloading an 'app', or on your desktop via the Yammer program. To download the desktop or phone 'app' click on your name in the top right corner then, 'Edit Account' and then choose the 'My Applications' tab. Chose the correct phone app based on your type of phone The desktop program is 'Air Desktop', you may also need to install this when prompted Recent Activity shows what colleagues you follow are working on - such as uploading files, editing pages, and joining groups in real-time, surfacing connections between people, content, and business applications to drive productivity.. Share your activity with your Yammer Network, allowing colleagues to see what you are working on Notifications Yammer has a lot of flexibility in the way messages are delivered to users. These can be customised from the 'Edit Profile' link under your name in the right hand corner of the screen. In the main 'Notifications' section you can set the frequency of information and the types of network activity you'd like to be notified about To be sent notifications of network activity in real time enable updates by email or SMS Text By linking your Twitter account to your Yammer profile, tweets posted on Twitter will appear in the Yammer network message feed. Simply include #yam anywhere within the tweet.
