NEVADASTATECOLLEGE TEACHERPREPARATIONPROGRAM LESSONPLANFORMAT

Description of Classroom:
Grade 7, Developmental Math 7, genders split 50/50

Background:
how to similar Continuation of unit on Ratios, Rates, and Proportions. This lesson comes right after lessons of setting up and solving proportions. Lesson will take 1 instructional day. Lesson precedes solving figures. Students are at an acquisition state of learning relative to the content.

Content Objective(s):
SWBAT identify corresponding sides and angles IOT identify and name similar triangles.

Language Objective(s):
Students will show theyve accomplished the objectives by being able to: -listen to verbal and procedural scaffolds -speak and discuss with peers/partners the relations between similar figures and there corresponding angles and sides. -discuss and collaborate in the whole class setting, how to correctly setup a proportion to test if two figures are similar.

Nevada Standards:
4.2 The student will solve measurements problems using ratio and proportions.

Key Vocabulary:
Corresponding angles, corresponding sides, similar, figures, congruent, proportional sides.

Best Practices: (put an X next to those that you address in your lesson)

Teaching Strategies: Cooperative learning, verbal and procedural scaffolding, blooms taxonomy
questioning, modeling, & gradual release method.

Warm Up Activity:
Instruct students to grab 3 different color pencils on the way into the class; & take out SOTW Skill of the Week practice; based on pre-post test from beginning of the week; and what has already been covered. Students complete the three problems on Thursdays SOTW. Then, go over answers for SOTW -Pass out Similar Figures Transparencies & Calculators

Lesson Sequence:
Instruct Students to take out spiral notebooks o Date & Title (Objective) Review: What does it mean for things to be proportional? How do we determine if ratios are proportional?(Check their cross product and see if theyre equal) Focused Lesson/Teaching Model/Think Aloud: Class discussion of what the two words similar and figures means. Using inquiry & SMART board examples, draw out that similar figure are shapes that are alike or almost the same. Cooperative Learning/Hand-on: Working in partners, students will use transparencies of two triangles and two pentagons to determine any relationships between the figures. Students will share with the whole class what conclusions they drew from their observations. Define corresponding angles Define corresponding sides Define similar figures & criteria Post figures and have students determine if they are similar and have them justify their answers. Have students name the similar figures using proper notation. Draw attention to the order of the points relate to the angles Model setting up and solving the proportion between corresponding sides of figures to test whether they are similar
Collaborative Practice (Group Practice)-- YOU DO IT TOGETHER After walking students through one problem, students will work with their partner to solve the even problems from their workbook (Practice C). Students will be encouraged to share and compare their answers. Independent Practice-- YOU DO IT ALONE Students will complete the next 5 on their own. Teacher will monitor and assist as needed. Closure: What are the two criteria for similar figures? Same angles, proportional sides

Accommodations: The teacher will monitor groups and help those that need more assistance. Supplementary Materials: Similar Figures Transparencies (already pre-cut) -15 Pairs, SMART
Notebook Lesson & SMART Board, ELMO, Spiral Notebook for class notes, calculators, color pencils, glue and glue sticks.

Review/Assessment:
Informal Assessment: Proctor around classroom during cooperative learning/hands-on portion of class. Homework: Practice 5-7, Practice B (all)
