ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Altoona was able to secure a win in the final game of their six-game homestand with a, 6-4, victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Thursday night. The Curve jumped out in front in the game, which was only the fifth time this season that they scored the game’s first run. It was Curve starter Brandon Cumpton who actually started the rally, doubling for his first career hit to start off the third. Cumpton came around a few batters later when Brock Holt doubled and the Curve grabbed the lead at 1-0. Altoona wasn’t finished in the third as Matt Curry was intentionally walked two batters later to load the bases for Tony Sanchez. Sanchez popped out but Anthony Norman came through with the big hit, a two-run single to right, that broke the game open at, 3-0. Cumpton (2-2) was sharp on the mound, tossing 7.2 innings of two-run ball while striking out three. The Georgia Tech product induced 14 groundball outs across his 7.2 innings pitched, which was a new season-high for a Curve pitcher in 2012. The Curve tacked on a run in the fourth thanks to a Robbie Grossman ground-rule double and then two more in the seventh. Altoona’s final two runs proved to be vital as Harrisburg mounted a late rally, scoring three runs across the eighth and ninth innings. Duke Welker flexed but did not break as he was able to wrap up the victory in the ninth. Grossman reached base four times in the win while Curry extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 13.

Team Reading New Britain CURVE/AEROS SERIES: The Curve make their first visit to Canal Park in 2012 this weekend, playing a three-game series Binghamton Friday through Sunday. The home of the Aeros has traditionally been a tough place for the Curve to play as they own a Trenton career record of 53-76 in the downtown ballpark. This is the first of three trips that the Curve will make to The Rubber New Hamp. Capital of the World. The two clubs split the first series of the year in Altoona with the Curve winning the last game of Portland the shortened two-game set.

FOR ALTOONA: RHP Matt McSwain will make the spot start for the Curve today in the spot of Aaron Pribanic, who Overall Record ..........................................8-10 was placed on the disabled list on Monday (right shoulder). The spot-starting role is a familiar one for McSwain, who Home..................................................... 6-5 made a pair of spot starts down the stretch in ‘11. A former starter, McSwain has been used primarily as a reliever over Road ...................................................... 2-5 the last few years after starting 25 of 28 games that he appeared in for Lynchburg in 2009. The Elon University product went 11-8 in ‘09 for the Carolina League champion Hillcats, who captured the Mills Cup. In his two starts last season for Place (E.L. Western) .............................. T-4th Altoona, McSwain went five innings apiece and allowed two runs in each. For more on McSwain, see page two. Games Behind............................................ -4.0 FOR AKRON: The last time the Aeros came to Curve, Pa. they brought with them a trio of left handers and this series will be no different as tonight’s stater Giovanni Soto is a southpaw and will face the Curve for the second time this season. In his first outing of the season against Altoona (which was also his Double-A debut), Soto gave up one run on a pair of hits across five innings while striking out six to earn himself a victory. Since then, Soto has surrendered a combined eight runs (seven earned) in 9.1 innings on a total of 13 hits. Eastern League opponents are hitting .273 off the Puerto Rico native entering play tonight and he’s been a tad more successful away from Canal Park. In his one start against the Curve he allowed just two hits and both were to players currently on Altoona’s disabled list (Andrew Lambo and Jarek Cunningham). KING FOR A DAY(OR TWO OR THREE): Altoona Curve manager P.J. Forbes will not be travelling with the team for the three-game road trip in Akron due to some back issues. In the interim, hitting coach Ryan Long will manage the club with some assistance from GCL Pirates skipper Tom Prince, who is in town this week as well. Forbes hopes to rejoin the team in Erie on Monday. POWER OUTAGE: Altoona enters Friday night with four team home runs, which is tied for the third fewest among full-season MiLB teams that are currently playing. Only the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League (2) and Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League (3) have fewer team home runs than the Curve. Birmingham (Southern League), which is where 2011 Curve hitting coach Brandon Moore currently holds the same post, along with the Kannapolis Intimidators of the South Atlantic League each have four team home runs as well. CURRY ON MY WAYWARD SON: Curve first baseman Matt Curry has found a good groove at the plate over his last couple of weeks. Dating back 11 games, the TCU product is batting .317 (13-for-41), including a .400 (8-for-20) mark in his last five. Now riding an eight-game hitting streak, over the course of which he’s batted .355 (11-for-31), Curry has boosted his batting average since April 15 from .281 to .317. He was 1-for-3 in the win on Thursday but did not double, breaking his streak of six straight games with a two-bagger. The lefty also carries a 13-game on-base streak (longest of the season for a Curve player) into tonight’s opener with Akron dating back to April 10th. SIZZLING SANTOS: Despite being held hitless on Thursday, Adalberto Santos is still cooking at the plate for Altoona with his .405 average entering tonight’s game with Akron. The Bronx, N.Y. native had hit in five straight Games......................................................................6 games to the tune of a .579 average (11-for-19) with four doubles, seven RBI, Record..................................................................3-3 3 walks and six runs scored before being blanked on Thursday. In his five away games this season, the Oregon State product has batted .385 (5-for-13). THE SPACE BETWEEN: The Curve haven’t played many close games this season. In fact, only five of Altoona’s 18 contests to this point have been decided by one or two runs. Altoona won Thursday night’s game, 6-4, to improve to 3-2 in one or two-run games. They’re 5-8 in games decided by three runs or more. DR. STRANGEGLOVE: Altoona played an errorless game for the fifth time this season in Wednesday night’s loss to Harrisburg but couldn’t make it two in a row as they committed a pair of errors Thursday. The club has only put together back-to-back errorless games one time this season and that was April 13th-14th in Richmond. The Curve are tied for the most errors in the league at 28 with New Hampshire but own the worst fielding percentage in the league at .960.

Mike Passanisi and Tyler Maun will describe all the action of the 2012 season on the flagship of the Curve, ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM-AM in Altoona. Pregame coverage begins 30 min. before all games.
