Analysis Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen words and music

:
Freddie Mercury 1975

1. The song is about someone who has committed a murder. He struggles with that in his head. 2. “is this the real life, is this just fantasy (l. 3-4)” in this part the boy is realizing he has just killed someone. He can’t believe what he just did. Sadly he finds out it wasn’t a dream and he can’t turn back what he did. “I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy (l. 8)” he realizes he is not special and the world won’t go easy on him. “Any way the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me (l. 10)” he decides it doesn’t matter what happens to him and he will take whatever may come. “Mama, just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he’s dead. (l. 12-13)” The boy is telling his mom what he just did. He was completely aware of what he just did. He wants his mother to accept his fate too. “Too late, my time had come, sends shivers down my spine, body’s aching all the time. (l. 20-21)” He realizes that what is done is done and he can’t turn back the time. He is frightened by the thought of that. He chooses not to run away but to “face the truth. (l. 23)” “I see a little silhouetto of a man Scaramouche, Scaramouch, will you do the fandango (l. 2728)”. Shadows symbolize the true self of a person. This shadow of the boy is small, which means he is a small man. A Scaramouch is a character in Italian opera acts and it means a ‘boastful coward’ which refers to the boy. “He’s just a poor boy, from a poor family, spare him his life from this monstrosity (l. 32-33)” The angel is now fighting for the boy’s clemency, while the boy is still saying it doesn’t matter what happens to him with “easy come, easy go (l. 34).” “Bismillah!”(l. 35), literally means in the name of god (Allah in Arabic). In this part, the devil and the angel are fighting. The devil wins the fight with the final “no, no,no,no,no,no,no” (l. 34). “Beelzebub has the devil put aside for me, for me, for me!”(l. 45) Beelzebub is one of the names of the Devil. The boy breaks free from the Devil and takes his life into his own hands. “So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye” (l. 47) The stoning is from being tortured and the spitting in the eye is being ridiculed by the devil. But the boy fights back saying “Just gotta get right out of here” (l. 50). In the last part, the boy says it doesn’t matter what happens to him next: “Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters, to me.” (l. 52-54) He has overcome all his devils. “Any way the wind blows” (l. 56) he will go. ‘ 3. This song is very sad, sometimes angry. This is also because of the music and the way Freddie mercury sings the words with so much emotion in his voice. The music is really important. Even when I didn’t know the meaning of the words I got shaky while listening to the song.

A rhapsody is a song with many different contrasting music styles that perfectly fit together. I can’t hardly breathe when I listen to this song. increases that. The first part of the song is a capella. It’s a story and not just some kind of superficial love song. the heave guitar and the loud singing. I think it’s very touching. Even when I didn’t know the meaning of the words. Especially in the operatic part. The forth part is heavy rock. because you can really feel the pain through the words. so it has even more impact. I thought it was an amazing song. which refers to the person in case. The Bohemian were some kind of Gipsy’s from Czech. The third part is an operatic part. who has committed a murder. I think that is genius and Freddie Mercury was a genius song writer. Some parts have been punctuated by a drum or a very loud bass. My opinion I like this song because it’s genius. The last part is also calm. The listener can feel the chaos going on in the boys head. Then only a piano turns in. they lived with the wind. The words and the music fit perfectly together. The music increases the words. Every word has a meaning and is important. Like “Any way the wind blows”. There is only a piano and many voices (they over doubled it) so you get the impressions of a whole choir. often with common themes. Everything is just perfect. There is very much anger in this part and the music. This song has been on top of many all time lists and was the ultimate breakthrough for Queen. The words have an historical meaning. The second part is also calm. The Bohemian lived a carefree life. 5. Lisa vehof A4c 15-1-2012 .4. while the angel fights the devil.
