He came without dogs, without noises or wage earners, without mercenaries or intermediaries, without cane...

He came only with attitude of mercy, with the accessories of love.

For comprehension well this passage is necessary to place it in its context. It is joined and is a consequence of the previous chapter dedicated to the healing of the blind person of birth. Of background it has a conflict and a few very hard accusations of Jesus to the Jewish leaders.

The false shepherds, expel the blind person of the synagogue. Jesus, on the contrary, contrive a meeting with it, receives it and helps him to see. The context is not bucolic at all but polemic and full of tension.

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.;
11

Jesus is defined as a good Shepherd: he knows, defends, takes care, assembles, accompanies... The story of the good shepherd is a long exhibition (Jn 10, 1-18) that contains several parts. First of all, by means of a comparison, Jesus legitimizes his intention of extracting his followers from the Jewish institution (vv 1-6). Next he speaks about himself as the only alternative of life (vv 7-10). Finally he presents himself as a shepherd's model (vv 11-18). The verses 19-21 gather the reaction that his words cause in the Jewish leaders.

The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and runs away, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; 13 he runs away because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep.
12

“Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselves and have prevented others from going in who wanted to” (Lk 11,52).

When in the "shepherding" enter the interests of money, the position, the promotion, the honors, the prepotency, the own interests..., the supposed "shepherd" turns into wage earner. Jesus censures clear and hardly these attitudes personified in the religious leaders, who do not serve to the persons, but they make use of them for their own profit.

14

I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me,

Jesus satisfies the deep desire of every person: that there is someone who knows me really, in whom I could trust. To know in Biblical language means to love, reciprocal and generous love, mutual knowledge, to be understood without words, intimate communion, deep and personal relation, unconditional abandonment, full confidence. Do I worry about knowing more and better to Jesus? And to know and respect the persons, as the style of Jesus? What feelings and attitudes are provoked in me to know me deeply known and unconditionally loved by Jesus? To know that, as me, he knows and loves all the human beings?

Jesus not only knows us, he gives us life and protects us, but also he introduces us in the love with the Father. Jesus is always a Good News and following him fills the life of peace, plenitude, happiness and gratitude. In all the circumstances of life, we have the confidence and security that we are always in his hands. Why, for whom do I give the life?

15

just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep.

And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and I must lead these too. They too will listen to my voice, and there will be only one flock, one shepherd.
16

Jesus shows, once again, his universal and ecumenical program. And he repeats that He is the only Shepherd. His desire and his mission is to assemble all men and women in a brothers' family, in a land that is a home opened for all and where they all could sit down around the same table without privileges or scandalous inequality. It is fundamental to listen to Jesus's voice. To be able to distinguish his voice in the middle of so many voices, so many empty words, so much noises... Do I need to recover the listening capacity? Do I listen to my interior voice? Do I listen to others? Who are considered to be followers of Jesus, are they characterized for attracting the persons?

The Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me; I lay it down of my own free will, and as I have power to lay it down, so I have power to take it up again; and this is the command I have received from my Father.
17

Jesus gives us immortality. He always teaches us to act with full and absolute freedom. Like Him. Jesus is the only Shepherd, the others we learn of Him to work so that all the persons have life and have it in abundance. We all are called to be a transparence of the good Shepherd. Our works do present to Jesus in the world. It is our mission, not a load but the best assignment.

In Jesus's community there is not leaders and guided, shepherds and sheep. We all are brothers and the responsibility concerns to all The evangelical passage speaks to us about the Good Shepherd who is Jesus and of the God's people, in which we all are jointly responsible. If villain is to feel “shepherd“, considering other members of the community “sheep“, it is not better to feel “sheep“, considering other members “shepherds“. These false attitudes, which not at all have to do with Jesus's desire, do not help to construct neither the community nor the Kingdom. "You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one Master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven."(Mat 23)

In pastures green he grazes me, leads me towards rest sources and repairs my forces. He knows my projects and enthusiasms, he guides me for ways of justice, teaches me the treasures of life and whistles happiness songs, for the love of his name. Every day, prettily renewed, pronounces my name with tenderness and calls me along with him. Every morning anoints me with perfume; and he allows me to drink a toast every evening, with the glass overflowing with peace. The Lord is my shepherd. The Lord is the only leader who does not subjugate! He does honor to his name giving to our life dignity and stature. I am not afraid of the prophets of calamities, nor to the tyranny of the powerful ones, neither to the rustle of the mediocre ones. Because You go with me! You have prepared a banquet of fraternal love to celebrate my walking through the world. In it you reveal to me who your favorite ones are and which my footpaths of the future have to be. Thanks to the Lord who creates me, he supports and guides me with his presence loaded with Life! Ulibarri, Fl.
