talk to my mother every day. At this point in our lives we are close friends. She does homework with my daughter every night.

Optimism is genetic I
During those years she continued her education and went on to get two Masters Degrees in other areas of Education. My younger brother remembers fondly working on his e homework along side my Mom as she tried to complete her coursework. I’m not sure that everybody has those examples that lead us forward to great success in life. And I’m really grateful for each of these women and their giving nature and high work ethic. All of the mothers that have been here to take care of me have been optimistic hard workers. My Mom’s mother, Honey, attended college and graduated when just 13% of women in the country were doing that. She taught for years on the West Side of Chicago, and helped to lead national math conferences for teachers. My Dad’s mother started working when she was just 16 years old. My Nana lived in an orphanage during part of the depression and worked to keep some sense of order with her siblings as they were separated. Nana was a teamster. My own mother, worked full time as a teacher

I had wonderful relationships with both of my grandmothers too. And I’ve been very lucky in life to have such fantastic examples of strong, energetic, optimistic women.

I still think of Honey every time I smell Chanel #5, or when brownies are just coming out of the oven. My Nana’s pasta sauce with neck bones: those avors still resonate when my father tries to recreate this day long cooking tradition. And while I don’t have a sense of smell that reminds me of my mother, I feel like I channel her up beat spirit when I need to address a group or mingle in a crowd. Each of these women, were funny and outgoing and energetic. And not because there weren’t physical struggles: knotted arthritic ngers and knees, tinnitus, heart conditions. My mom and my grandmothers just had an extra beat of optimism that got them through each day. And while I have my grey moments, I would say I too am fairly energetic and outgoing, often smiley. I’m sure it’s genetic.

Me with my wonderful mother, Nora Abboreno

Anushya & Minali Hettiarchchi W
hen tulips and da odils are blooming it conjures up the desire to dress in style, like a Lady. One of the rst things I do when working with a new client is help her determine her style aesthetic: Romantic, Bohemian, Classic, Preppy, Punk, Modern, or “True Lady.” On most occasions, I am a combo of Romantic and Boho, but there is one day out of the year where I will don the out t of a True Lady and that is Mothers Day. Including the Kentucky Derby, this is one day when wearing a hat and gloves feels almost required. Anushya Hettiarchchi, is wearing a ‘Donna Morgan’ dress in bright fuschia and orange orals, ($136) and a ‘Scala’ magenta sun hat ($35). Both items were provided by Camille et Famille on Madison in Forest Park. Her jewelry by ‘Patricia Locke’ is also available at Camille et Famille and will be featured in an upcoming Patricia Locke trunk show. Her daughter Minali, age 7, is wearing a blue and white dress with a yellow accent belt provided by GaGa Girls, New and Resale Clothing on North Avenue in Oak Park. Anushya has lived in River Forest with her family for 13 years. A trained lawyer from Sri Lanka, Anushya is following her passion for baking and catering by starting her own cupcake business this year. You can email her for a price list

Emily Collins & family
hen looking for area families that would help us highlight some women’s and children’s fashion in the area, Emily Collins and her children came to mind immediately. Lucky for us at Wednesday Journal Publications, Emily agreed to visiting a couple of retailers with her children to be out tted for our special photo shoot at the Oak Park Conservatory. Motherhood is full of moments when laughter helps to generate patience, when pride for our children is so overwhelming we cry and moments of sheer peace in knowing that even if not perfect, our parenting has gotten us through one more day. I am often amazed with mothers that nd patient ways to move through each day, embracing the challenges and joys with the same step. Emily Collins is one of those moms. An Oak Park resident for over 12 years, Emily whose children will all be grade school/high school bound next year, has taken

on a position as an Assistant Teacher with the Early Childhood Program at the Park District of Oak Park. I’ve often thought her experience as a counselor, past Oak Park business owner (she used to own The Soap Box), or Girl Scout leader helped her to nd this path of patient parenting and enthusiastic teaching. Emily and her oldest daughter Madelaine are modeling items from deedee and edee in Forest Park. Madelaine’s peacock feather themed cotton dress with hood by Synergy is $64. Her shoes in a spring yellow by Geewawa are $119. The thin leather belt is just $13. Emily chose a loose owing knit chartreuse colored 2 button sweater by Linea Domani priced at $89. Her natural colored yellow fun heals with tie by Morenatom are $190. Her other four children, listed in order by age, Emmet, Chloe, Will & Lucy were out tted by SugarCup Traders on Marion Street in Oak Park. All of their clothing is from the Tea Collection featuring an extremely comfortable Pima Cotton.

Hats on to moms
Hats are back in a big way. And there is no better holiday to don a hat than Mothers Day. Thanks to our Fashion Blogger Suze Solari and Muse Boutique owner Heather Anderson, we have a sneak peak of some of the hat o erings from delux at Muse Boutique on Marion Street in Oak Park. According to Suze hats are certainly great Sunblockers & bad hair day xers. But most important, they are a chic way to add a bit of panache to your look. There isn’t a women’s fashion stop in the area without hats, so hit the streets and head over to Filoni, Ananas, Takara or even Scratch n Sni ! Happy Hat Days.
