ISAIAH 52:13-53:12

Chapter study Instructor’s Guide Lesson Objective: understand the mission of Christ, as it was expected from the prophecy of Isaiah. Didactic strategy: distribute on the previous weeks the handout with the questions and the assignment of finding the corresponding verse in the New Testament where the prophecies of Isaiah 52-53 were fulfilled. After reading the chapter, ask for the verses then proceed to the questions. Comment the relevance of every verse.

The Book of Isaiah The book of Isaiah was written before the exile, between 740 BC and 700 BC, in times of difficulty for the southern kingdom of Judah. In 723 BC the Assyrians conquered Israel, the northern kingdom dispersing the people, and Judah was under a constant threat. Isaiah prophesied during the time of Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. The king Ahaz reigned in a wicked way, with idolatrous customs (Isa. 8:19; 38:8; 2 Kings 23:12), but his son Hezekiah pursued righteousness. The second part of Isaiah, from chapters 40 on, probably was written during the Exile in Babylon and is rich in message of hope, that God will save with the coming of the Messiah – the Anointed one, both priest and king, the only one able to redeem Israel from sin and restore the Kingdom to a glory even greater than the former. There are so many references about the coming of Christ in Isaiah, and one of those many clear prophecies is found on this chapter 52:13-53-12. It is amazing that all those prophecies uttered seven centuries earlier were fulfilled to the letter by not other one, but in Jesus Christ.

Questions This chapter speaks about whom? In what moment in the life and mission of Christ were those verses fulfilled? Why was necessary Christ die? Christ died for sake of whom? After understanding this sacrifice made by Christ, what are our position and responsibilities before God? In 1 Peter 2:24 is stated: "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." How the sacrifice of Christ can heals us today? And heals us from what? Tell us how was Christ lifted up and exalted? (Isa 52:13) How was Christ’s appearance? (Isa 52:13; 53:2) How were He and his message received? (Isa 51:1,3) How is the situation human being before meeting God in Christ (Isa 51:6) If Christ had not offered Himself, the Just for the unjust, would be possible for humankind to attain salvation? (Isa 51:11-12) God, by foretelling the events of those chapters by seven centuries earlier, also foretold its importance for you. At that time of the prophecy God had not only Christ in mind, but us all. How can you respond to that?
