Forward the instructor's e-mailed to regdl@shoreline.edu with the following information: Student name and ID number Name and Item of class Request to drop the class Although technology becomes easier to use all the time, distance learning courses do require a minimum level of computer competency. Review the list below to see if you have the computer skills to take an online course. I know how to connect to and navigate around the World Wide Web. I know how to send and receive e-mail using the e-mail system of my choice I know how to manage electronic files. I have access to a computer 5-7 days per week. The computer I will use meets the basic requirements for my course. eLearning at Shoreline Community College Please visit this web site for information on eLearning

The course requires a lot of reading in lieu of course lectures. STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS Read the assignment sheet before starting the assignment. Complete work for your class on a regular basis. You will need a minimum of 10-15 hours per week to complete the work for this class. Distance Learning classes require extensive reading and do not allow the luxury of getting behind. Use the discussion board if you have questions about an assignment. Check the online classroom and your e-mail daily, Monday-Friday. Always have a backup of your computer work on a different device. Do not depend on the fact that your hard drive will not crash. Please note that although I thoroughly understand the difficulties that can occur if your computer equipment breaks down, you will still need to find a way to complete the work in a timely fashion. If you have computer problems, let me know right away. Computer woes, while understandable, will not be sufficient justification for homework delays of more than a day or two. Do not wait until the week before the end of the quarter to ask questions about graded assignments. Do not ask for help in the comment section of the assignment manager. Use the discussion board.

GRADING Chapter Assignments Online Quizzes All work should conform to the grading requirements and to the procedure for each project defined in the text or by the instructor. Work should be completed accurately in order to count for full credit. No resubmissions will be accepted. Check Blackboard for exact due dates/times. Late Assignments will lose 5 points for each day late and will not be accepted two days after the assigned due date. There may be multiple files due for each lesson. There will be weeks when more than one chapter will be assigned. There will be an online quiz for each chapter. Quizzes should be taken after completion of the assigned material. You will have the opportunity to take each quiz three times. Being locked out of a quiz counts as one attempt. The highest quiz score will be used in calculating your grade. The quizzes are timed. One point will be deducted for each minute over the allotted time exceptions are made for those with testing accommodations. All quizzes must be completed by the scheduled due date @ 11 p.m. Missed quizzes will result in a grade of 0. Although your highest grade may not be reflected in your quiz grades, it will be used to calculate your final grade. E-mail your instructor about quiz questions do not post questions to the discussion board about quizzes. QUESTIONS ABOUT HOMEWORK? Post questions to the discussion board; do not send homework questions to your instructor. You can post anonymously. If you know the answer to someones question reply accordingly. Please make sure you read the section on Netiquette before posting. All grades will be recorded in the Blackboard classroom. It is the students responsibility to keep track of submitted work. Allow one week after submission for the instructor to grade and post your work. Keep all your work until after grades have been posted. Your instructor reserves the right to revise the assignment schedule & assignments. OTHER GRADING OPTIONS

Z Grade Hardship withdrawal. This grade may be given at the student's written request and the instructor's agreement that a crisis and/or unusual, extreme circumstance has interfered or interrupted the student's ability to attend class and perform course work for the current quarter. This grade will not be considered in GPA calculations. Pass/NC Grade Option Inform your instructor if you want a Pass grade rather than a decimal grade. To earn a Pass grade, you must complete the work for the equivalent of the 2.0 grade. You must fulfill the requirements for the NC grade to earn the NC. NC Grade The NC grade is used when a student does not successfully complete a course offering a Pass/No Credit (P/NC) option. The NC grade is not considered in the GPA calculation. V Grade The V grade is an Unofficial Withdrawal and will be awarded when a student attends briefly, rarely or not at all and does not withdraw with a W grade. This grade will be considered to be a 0.0 in GPA calculation. I grade (Incomplete) At a student's request, a grade of Incomplete may be given when the instructor agrees that the student is unable to complete the requirements of the course during the quarter but can successfully complete the course work with no additional instruction. The Incomplete Contract form must be completed. This grade is rarely given in this class except in unusual circumstances and generally indicates that only a small portion of the class needs to be completed. This course is designed to be completed within one quarter. CHEATING Cheating is a serious offense and may result in a failing grade. ANY use of the work of another with the intent to submit as your own is cheating. If two assignments/tests look inappropriately similar, both assignments/tests will receive zero credit (no points). If you work with someone else on homework assignments, you must each complete your own work in its entirety; simply altering names on assignments and submitting them as your own is cheating. Submitting the work of another as your own is cheating and will result in a grade of 0 for the assignment and may result in a failing grade for the class. E-MAIL. You will need your own reliable e-mail address. Please do not use someone elses e-mail address since I will be replying to your messages and there are issues of confidentiality if others are able to see my feedback to you. You can set up a free e-mail account through Shoreline at http://www.shoreline.edu/StudentAccounts.aspx. Shoreline's e-mail program allows you to receive Blackboard messages and to attach multiple files to messages you send. Having a school e-mail account will also allow you to use the online resources through the college library http://www.shoreline.edu/library/. Be aware that Hotmail, Yahoo, and AOL e-mail accounts may not receive e-mail messages sent through Blackboard, the online course management tool used here at Shoreline. These e-mail providers have security features including junk mail filters that interpret Blackboard e-mail as junk mail. The result is that Blackboard messages are sent either to a junk mail folder or are disposed of immediately. If you have a Hotmail account, check the instructions for setting your Hotmail account to accept Blackboard messages; these instructions may be found at http://www.miami.edu/bb/hotmail/. I strongly recommend that you use a Shoreline e-mail address. It is your responsibility to verify your e-mail address in blackboard. You will not be notified if your e-mail account doesnt work or if you missed an e-mail due to not verifying the account.

STUDENT ID. Get a student id card. Picture ID cards for all students currently enrolled at Shoreline are available from the Library. To validate the card, students must get a sticker from the Cashier's Office at the time of tuition and fee payment, or from the Library. Once validated, these cards serve as ID for registration, bookstore purchases, use of the computer labs and the library. Replacement cost of lost or stolen cards is $15. SCC charges a print fee of .02 per sheet. Your student id card acts like a debit card for this purpose. Current Students (Information about Student ID Cards) SCHEDULE CHANGES DUE TO WEATHER If the College is closed due to inclement weather, students should listen to KIRO, KING, or KOMO radio and television stations for broadcast of closures or check the Shoreline Home Page on the Internet. If no mention is made of SHORELINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE (not to be confused with the Shoreline School District) being closed, it will be assumed that the College is open and all staff and faculty will be present. Every attempt will be made to keep campus roads and walkways open and students can expect that classes will start at their scheduled start times. SchoolReport.org WORKING ON CAMPUS If your home computer does not meet the course requirements or if it breaks down, you may use the open student lab in the lower level of the Library. The computers in the open student lab are available on a firstcome, first served basis. Check the quarterly Library Student Computer Lab schedule online at Computer Labs in Library. If you use a computer at Shoreline, you will need to save all of your work to your flash drive so that you will keep your work with you. Also, you will be required to display your student ID card with the appropriate quarterly validation. ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE.
