Patanjali Yoga (Ch 4: Enlightenment )

2.Siddhis or attainment of miraculous spiritual powers happen when the body-mind in one state transforms to another level not easily explained by material sciences, and these happen in the following ways: a) By birth b)By herbal potions/drugs c)By Mantra Chanting d)By penance and blessing by the Almighty e)By samadhi 3) The psycho-physical entity cannot hold the powers of miracles ,but attuning them causes miraculous powers to happen (very much as a farmer cutting a channel from neighbours field causes the water from there to fill his field, though the farmer has no power to directly transfer the entire water).

4) The cause for existence of the mind stuff (chitta which constitutes mind) is due to ego the I ness, and hence whatever way the mind is conditioned or moulded ,ego only increases, not otherwise. 5) All aspects of mind and its transactions emanate from the same mindstuff(with ego as the hero) 6) Meditation reduces the latent impressions of past actions 7)The actions of an elightened yogi is neither good nor bad (black or white) whereas those of others are good, bad or mixed

8) It is the left over yearnings (vasanas ) from those past actions (see 7) that create tendencies creating new actions appropriate to their nature (and qualities) 9) #Thus past memories and impressions create new cycles of action even when their cause is separated from effect by time place or births. #Very important in deciding the next birth ! Those who abide in satwa (alternately written as sattwa or satwika) go upwards (to higher spheres in celestial life),Rajasika in the middle and Tamasika dwelling in the functions of the lowest Guna,go downwards . 10) The tendencies for actions are infinite because of the desires and the will to attain these. 11) For actions ignorance and ego are the causes, and, rebirth and enjoyment of fruits are the results.Mind is the matrix and the sense experience is the medium.

Without these four instruments actions do not happen. 12) A part of the properties of an Object (or objective experience) existes in the vasanas of the beings, and another part exist as its current experience and another as its future experience. Therefore the experiential reality of an object does not change with time. When it exist unmanifest in its root cause,it appears as if the object or its experience does not exist. 13) In all the three states as vasanas, present experience and the future experience, the functions of the experiential reality manifest one of the three Qualities such as Satwa,Rajas or Tamas 14) Though there is Satwa,Raja and Tamas differentiation in functions or Dharmas of beings, the new dharma resulting from transformation of the state of mind has its unique properties distinct from the original dharma ,very much as though hydrogen and oxygen has different functions, the water resulting from the combination of these has entirely different properties. 15) The functioning of an object, or message , symbol or incident creates different impressions and reactions in different people. Although every one sees or experiences the same object, message , symbol or incident it creates different reactions in different people ranging from good to bad, this is not because of the difference in the object, message , symbol or incident but due to the difference in the perception, which creates attitudes and actions according to vasanas of each . 16) An object exists independent of the observation by any individual mind ,and there is a material truth behind its existence, otherwise the object should vanish when one mind does not perceive it. 17) Only when an object create its impressions in the mind through the sense data, then only the mind experiences it.

Patanjali Yoga (Ch 4: Enlightenment )

19) Mind is known only to the Self which witnesses its changes.. 19) But mind being inert does not know itself.

Patanjali Yoga (Ch 4: Enlightenment )

20) Being inert and non self luminous, mind cannot know itself and it does not know the objects reflected in it since that power also belong to the Self. 21) Also when the content of one mind becomes the subject of another mind without the experience of the object, then the experience is not full or satisfactory, indicating that it is the Self that is the observer and not mind (which does the meachanical job of copying the impressions ).

Remember that Lord (Krishna) indicated in the earlier verses that This Soul is like a Lord (Kshetrajna) of a field (Kshetra) 22) When the unattached Soul aligns with the mind,it knows the content and activities of the mind. 23) The mind with the reflection of the soul and the external impressions is the all embracing essence . 24) Despite numerous tendencies, mind does not exist for itself,it is existing for the Self. 25) All questions as to who am I,why am I born, vanish once the glory of the self is experienced. 26) Then the detached mind of the yogi is drawn towards enlightenment 27) And disruptions to this calm state of freedom and enlightenment happens due to Latent impressions of the past actions or births.

28) Such thoughts which arise in the midst of enlightenment must be eliminated by the same methods as the other causes of sufferings.

29) Once the distinction between the subtlest level of mind and the Self (Soul) is known, the Self has no knowledge to acquire. This is the state of Dharma Megha Samadhi. 30) Through (the above mentioned) Dharma megha Samadhi destroys the causes of suffering, and the bondage of action disappears. 31) Then as the infinite knowledge is unveiled, whatever can be known becomes insignificant 32) Once the Yogi progresses beyond the Satwik (pure),Rajasik (passion driven) and Tamasik (ignorance or perversion driven) qualities as in dharma megha Samadhi, the continuous churn from satwik to rajasik to tamasik to satwik states by the mind no more happens. 33) The process by which self evolution by dissolving the mind in the Self and thereby revealing the Self alone, happens moment by moment in order, but realized only in the end called self realization. 34) Enlightenment is the dissolution of Sat,Rajas,& Tamas qualities and the Mind or Sakthi into the Soul/Self.
