The Roes Go Blue.com
The continuing story of how God is transforming lives at the University of Michigan. Psalm 90:17 Dear Friends, The pace has slowed down for us and it seems like it was just in time! It was such a great year but man, are we tired! School has ended and we’ve gone down to one service on Sundays at 10:01 and are ready to settle down into a bit more of a relaxed pace. We will be spending some time in May resting and refreshing. We are also getting ready for our summer leadership training (LT) program. The theme this summer is “Going Viral”. There are currently around 150 people signed up and we are praying for people to fall deeper in love with God this summer. This starts in June with a week long retreat. The other big news in our lives is that we are buying a house in Ann Arbor! Since our offer was accepted in February it has been very stressful and filled with DRAMA! However, things seem to have worked out and we hope to close late next week. We’ll be spending some time this summer doing renovations and are excited about it! We’ve lost some support over the past year and will also be working to raise about 8% of our budget. Please pray with us for God to provide this, as we know He can.

NLC by the numbers
This school year, our Theme was “Light of the World” and what a year it was! In March Jon & I helped lead a Spring Break trip to Cleveland, OH with a group of 22 students. We studied the entire book of Philippians and also taught them 4 self-discipleship tools. It was a fulfilling week, difficult at times, but God really moved in students’ hearts and minds We enjoyed helping launch a team of students at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) By the end of the school year we had 5 small groups and around 40 people regularly attending our New Life Team (weekly large group

gathering). We also trained 2 students as apprentices to pick up where we left off and lead small groups next year. Jon had an amazing year working with the Worship Team at NLC. We had 4 full worship teams that rotated leading worship on Sundays and other special services. It was great seeing students empowered in their giftings and connecting with God through music. Among other things, Andrea oversaw 7 Sunday morning volunteer teams and was able to help around 80 volunteers get plugged in. This was also a record year for NLC in terms of attendance. Our average

Thanks for your love, prayers and support as we Sunday morning weekly attendance was 860. This year 1,000 people strive to reach students for Christ! attended a small group with 750 regularly attending. Numerous lives

were transformed and we thank God for moving this year!

“Jim’s Story”
“Jim’s” story is one of the power God working through several people to lead Jim to Christ. A debate between an Atheist and John Allen was sponsored by “Secular Student Alliance” . The debate was held on campus and was packed full.

A student I’ll call “Jim” grew up in an atheist home. He learned to make life decisions centering around drugs and sex, based on one rule: “As long as it doesn’t interfere with your school work”. When Jim came to U of M last fall as a Freshman, he met Kevin and Caleb, guys who attended New Life Church. He came to church with them once, but then got caught up in school and partying. Recently, Jim decided to visit New Life again and sat by a girl named Hannah, who saw that he was visibly moved by the sermon. They ended up talking about God, and Hannah and Caleb later met with Jim to share the gospel with him. Still not sure if he believed in God, Jim began attending a small group. Last month, the group attended a debate about the existence of God in which John, an NLC staffer, was arguing for God’s existence. At the debate, Jim was moved by the humility and character John displayed, which contrasted starkly with the cold, tactical approach of the atheist debater. Moved by what he heard at the debate, Jim believed and gave his life to Christ!

John Allen (a fellow staffer pictured here) was brave enough to enter into a debate with an atheist. The humility he displayed at the debate was instrumental in Jim accepting Christ!

Since then, he’s learned about the Holy Spirit and is learning about obeying God’s righteous ways for the first time. It’s beautiful and amazing that God used so many means and members of the church to win Jim’s heart. No one person can take credit for this; but it’s the kind of work God is doing through the whole church (& through your help!) every day. Thank you!
