Plus. An old school. 2011 9:00PM – 12:00AM STUDIO 505 At this session.SESSION OVERVIEWS NOVEMBER 7. We thought it would be a fun idea for a song. And thus. hard. Gian laid down the song’s first two verses in about 10-15 takes each. We applied a sweet distortion filter on the loop and slowed it down and it became the start of a new idea we wanted to take on. NOVEMBER 14. We also recorded a few overdubs and background ad-lib tracks. “Clive Davis Girls” was born. we didn’t get as much done as we hoped. we were satisfied with the complete feeling it gave us. the project. We started tweaking EQs to get a sense of the overall sound we wanted to achieve. Sabrina started to lay down background vocals and ad-libs. NOVEMBER 8. . We dropped the main breakbeat at parts where we felt a line of Gian’s raps need to be emphasized. back into the SSL. heavy-groove hip-hop track to be the final outcome. Though we spent six hours in the studio this session. Sabrina re-sang the chorus lines to blend it on top of the sampled chorus. NOVEMBER 15. after this session. we began the mixing process ITB. but at least we had our foundation for sure this time. we attempted to carry out what we initially proposed for our project––a Prince-like funk track that was reminiscent of the late 80s. while Sabrina handled the boards. we only had a heavy breakbeat as the complete instrumental track behind the vocals. prior to this night’s session. things ended up turning. 2011 3:00PM – 9:00PM STUDIO 505 During our time spent in our first session. However. We wanted to have this real good. Some key mixing procedures included giving Sabrina’s vox a lo-fi feel as a way to blend with the filtered Bee Gees sample. We ended up going with the last take of each verse for the song. We patched it to go through the API pre-amp. At this point. We sampled/chopped up a 4-bar measure section from the song “More Than a Woman” by the Bee Gees. it was a good way for Gian to re-explore his lost rapping abilities. 2011 7:00PM – 10:00PM STUDIO 21 NORTH We decided that a third verse was necessary to keep the flow going with the song. It also allowed the listener to focus more on the rap and the fun behind the track. We placed the chorus at the intro of the song and between every verse and the outro. The mix ended up being finished ITB. Gian wrote a quick verse on the spot and recorded it in the control room. and to have us show our pride for the program. while going through sounds trying to come up with a foundation for our track. as we landed on an old funk song that contained a pretty interesting 2-bar breakbeat-like loop. We decided to bring another sample to blend on top that would serve as the main chorus for the song. heavy breakbeat hip-hop track. The majority of the lyrics were written throughout the day. Emily Williams also paid a visit and helped contribute to the songwriting. using the U87. Although there weren’t that many elements making up the instrumental track. such as wind chimes and subtle synth rises to help carry the flow throughout the track and keep it fresh. We added transition sound effects. We began tracking vocals: we set up goboes in the live room and a Neumann U87 with a pop screen. 2011 9:00PM – 12:00AM STUDIO 505 We came up with this super brilliant idea of writing a song that would make flattering and cute references to the lovely women of ReMu.
