A COLLEGE GUIDE FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER SURVIVORS

(NewsUSA) - At 14 years of age, Chase Meacham of Columbus, Ohio, became a sur vivor.

He sur vived a cancer diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor that attacks youth during their budding adolescence. He sur vived 35 rounds of chemotherapy, fi ve surgeries and a relapse. As Meacham says, he was

tremendously lucky.

“I emerged from the darkness and the blackness and, to my great sur prise, found a world that was a thousand times sweeter than the one I had left,” said the 20-year-old Meacham, who now has a titanium prosthetic suppor ting his left knee. “For the fi rst time in my life, I was able to treasure each day. I could see things now; I could see just how wonderful it was to be able to walk, unbound by [wheel] chair or walker or crutches or cane.”

Like many childhood cancer sur vivors, Meacham realizes sur vivorship is a jour ney that lasts a lifetime. Through advocacy work he continues to impar t his intimate knowledge to others facing a lifetime battle with cancer, and he was one of 32 recipients to win a Beyond the Cure scholarship from The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS).

Among the many diffi cult steps that Meacham took after his treatment, going to college presented new challenges and rewards. To help parents and soon-to-be students with the transition, NCCS (www. thenccs.org) compiled advice from other sur vivors:

*

Be realistic about the college

completion timeframe. It takes the average student fi ve years to fi nish college these days -- even if they face none of the issues of a cancer sur vivor. Consider course requirements, course sizes and curricula and, if necessar y, take fi ve to six years to graduate.

*

Choose instructors with teaching

styles that complement your lear ning

style. Whether you thrive off class discussion, group work or individual face time with professors, ask academic advisors about compatible teachers.

*

Consider health insurance coverage.

Even if it’s been years since any tumor growth or relapse, you will always need

health insurance. Some universities offer coverage plans, which can be a viable option.

*

Get acquainted with other students

with disabilities. Being able to relate to

someone going through similar struggles can help sur vivors navigate problems and know what to expect.

3 EASY THINGS PARENTS MUST DO TODAY TO PROTECT THEIR KIDS

(NewsUSA) - The explosions of technology, mobile and social media use among tweens and teens have left many parents increasingly in the dark about

what their children see, say and do ever y day, and without a clue as to what to do about it.

Stopping on a wet road can take up to four times the stopping distance of a dr y road.

The truth is, most children have a hard enough time navigating the potential threats and pitfalls that come with being a “tween” or teen in the physical world, and the digital component only compounds the situation. Many parents today have NO IDEA what kind of information their teens are accessing and sharing on a daily basis, while most kids have NO IDEA of the potentially far- reaching consequences of their online behaviors and activities.

So the question is: How can parents help teens and tweens navigate their physical and digital worlds in a way that will keep them safe and on the right track?

  • 1. Star t a dialogue with your teen/tween.

Talk about sexting, cyberbullying, hazing and other threatening acts. Make your teen feel comfor table coming to you or other trusted adults if inappropriate content is shared with them.

  • 2. Remember that you own the

technology. Communicate upfront that you are the owner of the computer or phone and should have access to it, as well as any passwords used on the device.

  • 3. Lear n From Exper ts. Be sure to

set controls on your teen’s computer and smar tphone to monitor usage and activity.

*

Rainwater that mixes with oil or

grime on the streets can cause slipper y conditions that may result in unexpected skidding.

*

Drive smoothly. To maintain control

of your vehicle, tr y to avoid jerky, abrupt

movements when braking, accelerating or tur ning.

Check your tires at least once a month. This includes proper rotation,

*

infl ation, repair and replacement.

*

In many areas of the countr y, the

snow and ice of winter leave roads in bad shape. Hitting a pothole can damage your tire and/or the wheel of your vehicle.

The shar p impact can cause immediate tire or wheel failure or inter nal damage that can lead to tire failure weeks later. Keeping your tires properly infl ated will help reduce pothole damage and other road hazards. Here’s an extra tip about potholes:

If you do have to hit a pothole, avoid braking during the impact. Instead, attempt to brake before impact and release just prior to contacting the pothole. Braking during impact sets up the tire and wheel assembly for a “solid

*

hit” against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tire is rolling, rather than skidding, over the pothole.

For parents looking for advice and to lear n from fi rst-hand experiences on how to better protect their teens around technology use and other areas of their life, log onto www.parentingtodayskids. com. The site brings together a roundtable of exper ts from legal, safety and parenting exper ts to real-world moms and teens who engage in and offer words of wisdom to address today’s parenting challenges. What parents teach their kids now about safe and appropriate online and mobile behavior will help ensure a happy and healthy passage to adulthood.

DISCOVER A BETTER RIDE ON WET ROADS

(NewsUSA) - Bald or poorly maintained tires won’t get you very far when it comes to driving on slipper y roadways. With improper equipment and maintenance, slick surfaces from rain storms are a major threat to safety on the road.

Take control by following this advice from your friends at Firestone Complete Auto Care on ways to prepare yourself and your vehicle for possible wet weather.

*

During wet weather conditions, drive

slowly and keep in mind that stopping

distances will be longer than usual.

Save yourself money on expensive repairs by following these tips to help keep your vehicle running in tip-top shape.

SELLING YOUR HOUSE: WHICH ‘FIXES’ ARE WORTH IT TO LURE BUYERS?

(NewsUSA) - Okay, don’t panic.

If you’re one of those homeowners who’s been moaning about how hard it’s been tr ying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn’t been completely devastated just because a fl ood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion “robo- signing” mor tgage settlement.

In fact, while studies have shown your own proper ty value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you’re within a

quar ter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this:

Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are “move-in-ready,” so if

yours isn’t

...

well, there’s your problem.

“Buyers generally look at ‘as-is’ proper ties that need wor k, and say ‘I’ll pass,’” says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, N.J. “That’s why I tell clients it’s wor th making cer tain strategic fi xes if they’re looking for quicker and more profi table sales.”

So, which “fi xes” are wor th it, and which aren’t? Read on:

Wor th It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said.

Not Wor th It: Major bath renovations. “Whatever you do might not suit the buyer,” says O’Neill, “and meanwhile, you’d have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars.” Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a moder n-day spa for your own new abode. Wor th It: Ripping up old car peting. Whether you replace it with new car pets or refi nish the underlying wood fl oor is less impor tant than getting rid of an eyesore.

Not Wor th It: Major kitchen renovations. Same “taste” issue as above.

Wor th It: Anything that enhances “curb appeal.” If the fi rst thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it’s been whipped by a tor nado, say, chances are you’ve already lost the sale. “It’s a huge tur n-off,” says O’Neill, “and makes buyers predisposed to fi nd even more things they don’t like.” So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roofi ng manufacturer in Nor th America), which have the look of luxur y shingles but at very affordable prices (www.gaf.com).

Not Wor th It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of “you” there is, the more likely prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.

NEW GROUP BUILDS OFF OCCUPY WALL STREET MOVEMENT

More Sharing Ser vicesShare | Share on facebook Share on myspace Share on google (NewsUSA) - Occupy Wall Street’s most recent push, “May Day,” exemplifi es the cr ux of the protest: it’s a great for um to express widespread discontent about fi nancial issues, but less adept at affecting bona fi de change between giant cor porations and average consumers.

Critics of the movement tend to call it politically dangerous and radical, like pollster Doug Schoen in the Wall Street Jour nal. On the other hand, President Obama is embracing a 2012 platfor m cr usading for the 99 percent against the presumptive GOP nominee.

However, Obama’s administration didn’t fulfi ll its original vows promising Wall Street culpability or repercussions for reckless bankers. Despite public sentiment created by the Occupy movement, in four years, the federal gover nment hasn’t fi led a single charge against any Big Finance executives.

“It’s per plexing at best,” said Phil Angelides, the Democratic for mer Califor nia treasurer who chaired the bipar tisan Financial Crisis Inquir y Commission. “It’s deeply troubling at worst.”

While Occupy Wall Street succeeded in presenting a means to express concer n, the federal gover nment continues to hedge upon promises of fi nancial accountability. How can individual consumers take action?

A budding movement called All Our Power offers an alter native that’s designed to build off the momentum created by Occupy Wall Street and spur real action. As the fl edgling movement

spreads, millions of members will give All Our Power the ability to negotiate with top bankers, retailers, health insurance companies, cell phone providers and more.

In fact, the Occupiers at Zuccotti Park were joined by a large rally of protesters from All Our Power in early May. Their signs and chants urged passersby and Occupiers alike to join their member base to amass a group 10 million strong. As the movement continues to swell in size and infl uence, the group intends to secure lower prices, signifi cant discounts and long-ter m contracts for all members -- and membership is free.

“With these kinds of numbers, we can tr uly bring negotiating power to make huge cor porations concede to the needs of individual consumers,” explains Joe Kalfa, founder of All Our Power. “Our plan is to hold a bunch more rallies in the coming months across the U.S. Our movement is a solution that bridges the gap between the 1 percent and the rest of us.

To lear n more about joining All Our Power and receiving signifi cant discounts at no charge, visit www. allour power.com.
