Primary Sources Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives. George Otto Gey. N.d. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Apr. 2012. <http://www.bangkokpost.com/media/content/20110424/259374.jpg>. George Gey ran a laboratory which the HeLa cells were first grown in. This picture is a photograph of George Gey. This photo was used to make my website more engaging to the viewers. Curtis, Adam. The Way of All Flesh. 1997. 1997. VideoCassette. This documentary helped me learn what Henriettas life was like as a whole and how they actually extracted her cells. This helped my project by giving me more insight on how things in the medical world was done back in the 1950s. Fauci, Cara A. Racism and Health Care in America: Legal Responses to Racial Disparities in the Allocation of Kidneys. Boston College Third World Law Journal 21.1 (2001): 36-68. Www.Google.com. Web. 30 Dec. 2011. <http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/law/lwsch/journals/bctwj/21_1/02_TXT.ht m>. Skin color played a large role in decision making processes including those that shouldnt be joked around with: like your health. This article helped me learn how the Civil Right Movement helped the colored

people in the medical industry. I used this source by gathering information about this certain topic. Franzos, Joshua, prod. Microscope Day. www.Youtube.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Jan. 2012. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzPTtt3jvPE>. This is a video about the family learning and seeing the HeLa cells for the first time. I edited the video down to an appropriate length, but Joshua Franzos was the original producer of this video. It was used to act as an interactive element of my website. HeLa Cells Dividing. rtmmicroscope. Www.Youtube.com. N.p., 23 Sept. 2009. Web. 19 Jan. 2012. <http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=2mOroGqJ_Uk&feature=plcp&context=C38fd09bUDOEgsToPDskKc7b DTEALyukQcNv4pXRiC>. The HeLa cells grow really fast and divide at remarkable speeds. This video is recorded by a scientist who works with HeLa cells and he filmed the HeLa cells dividing of a twenty-seven hour period of time, and he sped it up. This video served as a creative element on my site and to engage the viewers more. Henrietta Lacks. 1900s. Private collection. UwsScience.Wordpress.com. Web. 1 Jan. 2012. <http://uwsscience.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/henrietta lacks202-thumb-400xauto-7959.jpg>. Henrietta Lacks changed the course of the medical industry forever. This simple photograph of her, taken of her in the 1940s helped capture what she looked like. This photo is very well known now because it's one

of the only photos taken of Henrietta Lacks. It helped me understand what she looked like and helped me put a name to the face. John Hopkins Hospital. 1950. Www.Baltimore-Maryland.Org. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Jan. 2012. <http://baltimoremaryland.org/history/johnshopkinshospital.jpg>. John Hopkins Hospital was one of the few hospitals that allowed colored people inside for treatment at all in the 1900s during the segregation laws. Henrietta went to Johns Hopkins and even though they did allow black patients in, there was still huge laws of segregation due to the Plessy v. Ferguson laws. This picture was important to my project by giving me an idea of what the hospital looked like in the 1950s. Kolata, Gina. Geneticists Target: Immortal Cells: Geneticists Targets: Cells That Do Not Die And Genetic Guardians Surprising Findings Force Researchers in Cancer and Degenerative Diseases to Shift Focus. New York Times 22 Dec. 1992: C1. Boulder Public Library. Web. 15 Dec. 2011. <http://0search.proquest.com.nell.boulderlibrary.org/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/1 08839965/133A941C17C1CAAF417/3?accountid=48257>. This source was used to tell me how cancer effected the cell immorality. It made me realize that the cancer cell had a big part to do with the immorality of the cell because Henrietta's cells contain a gene called Telomerase which defies aging, so her cells did not know how long they've been living or when they were supposed to die.

Photographs from Henrietta Lacks Life. 20th and 21rst century. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. By Rebecca Skloot. New York: Broadway Paperbacks, 2011. 206-208. Print. These photographs were used to look at the people who made the HeLa cells possible and photographs of her family and her children. This source was used to read and look at the pictures and think about what life wouldve been like for Henrietta and her family. This source helped my project as a couple of the photos on my website were originally found in this book. Quintero, Omar, Dr. HeLa cell. N.d. CenBlog.org. N.p., 24 Mar. 2011. Web. 22 Dec. 2011. <http://cenblog.org/terra-sigillata/2011/03/24/hela-t-shirt and-button-design-contest/>. Henriettas cancer cells were very important to the medical industry. This photo helped me see what the cells really looked like. Although the cells are very small, a scientist stained the cells to bring out special features of the cells. Henriettas cells grew at rapid speed and this photo was just a snippet of them. Raz, Guy. Book Probes Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. EBSCO. N.p., 7 Feb. 2010. Web. 15 Dec. 2011. <http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail? vid=5&hid=12&sid=d73af9ee-0cba-4d0e-bc43bdaeae53a0f8%40sessionmgr11&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ %3d%3d#db=nfh&AN=6XN201002071908>. This source helped me understand that this case was not an act of

racism in the medical field. They simply just didnt have laws preventing the stuff that happened today. I used this source to gather information about if racism effected the outcome of the case. Richard W. TeLinde. 1900s. Webapps.Jhu.Edu. Web. 20 Jan. 2012. <http://webapps.jhu.edu/namedprofessorships/images/telinde,richard.jp g>. Richard TeLinde developed a theory about cervical cancer which saved the lives of many women. This photograph helped me realize who he really was and what he looked like. It was used by adding art to my website. Rogers, Michael. The Double-Edged Helix . Rolling Stone 25 Mar. 1976: n. pag. Print. This source was a magazine that was printed in 1976 when the information about the HeLa cells was starting to be leaked out into the public. This article talked a lot about the Familys reaction because the Rolling Stone Magazine went to go interview the family, and this is how the family figured out that the cells were still alive. This article was used to gain more prospectives on how the family reacted to the cells still being alive. Salks Vaccine Works. N.d. PolioVaccine.UmwBlogs.Org. Web. 21 Jan. 2012. <http://poliovaccine.umwblogs.org/files/2011/03/salk-newspaper2.jpg>. The Polio Vaccine was the first major use of HeLa cells. Jonas Salk tested his vaccine on the cells to see how they reacted to his vaccine before he

inoculated children with his vaccine. The HeLa cells helped prove that Salk's vaccine was effective. This photo was used for visual affect. Scherer, William F, M.D., Jerome T Syverton, MD, and George O Gey, M.D. Studies on the Propagation In Vitro of Poliomyelitis Viruses . The Journal of Experimental Medicine 97.4 (1953): 695-710. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/. Web. 9 May 2012. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2136303/pdf/695.pdf>. This source was used as a sturdy primary source as it was a medical journal that was published back in 1953. Three doctors wrote an article of the HeLa cells and how it helped the polio vaccine. I used this source to gather and try to perceive different views from all the doctors. This source really helped strengthen my project to gain more views on different sides. Sign Colored Waiting Room. 1943. Lib. of Congress. AltoArizona.com. Web. 2 Jan. 2012. <http://georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu/gastudiesimages/Colored %20Waiting%20Room%201.jpg>. Jim Crow laws played a huge role in society in the 1900s. This was vital to my website because this photo made me think about how the colored people felt seeing that they were not allowed in the same area as whites. This photo was used to show that there were Jim crow laws set in place during the time Henrietta received treatment.

Skloot, Rebecca. Cells That save Lives Are a Mothers Legacy: Living Cells

That Can save Lives Are a Mothers Enduring Legacy. New York Times 17 Nov. 2001: n. pag. Www.NYTimes.com. Web. 20 Dec. 2011. <http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/17/arts/cells-that-save-lives-are-a mother-s-legacy.html?pagewanted=all>. Henrietta Lacks contributed a lot to the medical industry. Although Henrietta lost her life, her cells have helped saves millions of lives, as they have produced a lot of vaccinations and drugs that help save people's lives. Her cells have been used to produce lots of life saving medicines, and they have contributed a lot to the medical industry. Southam Injecting HeLa to Prisoners . 1900s. Www.Dispatch.com. Ohio State U, n.d. Web. 21 Jan. 2012. <http://www.dispatch.com/content/graphics/2011/03/06/human-testing art0-ge9bs64l-11957-southam-dr-chester-with-inmate-jpg.jpg>. Southam injected HeLa cells into prisoners to see if HeLa cells grew like they did in Henrietta, in other people without their consent. The study turned out that though many people did grow small tumors, the tumors disappeared after a couple of days. The HeLa cells which were injected into other humans was proved to be false that cancer is contagious. This photo was used for visual aspects. Spectral- Design. Polio Vaccine. N.d. Www.HumanIllnesses.com. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1955. Web. 22 Jan. 2012. <http://www.humanillnesses.com/images/hdc_0001_0001_0_img0075.jp g>.

This photo is about the vaccine for Polio which made people very happy for the HeLa cells. Though many people at that time did not know that the HeLa cells was what made the polio vaccine possible. This photo was used for visual aspects. Unit at Tuskegee Helps Polio Fight; Corps of Negro Scientists Has Key Role in Evaluating of Dr. Salks Vaccine. The New York Times [New York Times] 10 Jan. 1955: 25. The New York Times. Web. 10 May 2012. <http://0search.proquest.com.nell.boulderlibrary.org/hnpnewyorktimes/docview/1 13259706/1369F85A7BA27728CD6/1?accountid=48257>. This article really informed me on how the polio vaccine was tested with the cells. I had no idea that it was such a long process, and this really proved it to be the opposite! It made me learn a lot about the medical procedures back in the 1950s. This source was used to gain deeper entail on the HeLa cells and how they helped with Salks vaccine against Poliovirus.

Secondary Sources Biba, Erin. Henrietta Everlasting: 1950s Cells still Alive, Helping Science . Www.Wired.com. N.p., 25 Jan. 2010. Web. 17 Jan. 2012. <http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/01/st_henrietta/>. This site helped me place the events in a chronological order based on dates of which event occurred when. This helped my project by adding in some information in my time line, and comparing the information to

what is already in my timeline, to this timeline. Brendan P. Lucey, Walter A. Nelson-Rees, and Grover M. Hutchins. Henrietta Lacks, HeLa Cells, and Cell Culture Contamination. Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine 133.9 (2009): 1463-1467. http://www.archivesofpathology.org. Web. 10 May 2012. <http://www.archivesofpathology.org/doi/full/10.1043/1543-2165 133.9.1463>. This article was used to gain more knowledge of what actually happened with Henrietta Lacks and her cells. This article taught me a lot more about the autopsy that was done and about the contamination of the other cell lines because the HeLa cell line was that powerful. Many doctors studied the HeLa cell line to understand and learn about other cell lines. This source helped my project by helping me comprehend and analyze deeper about what actually happened to Henrietta Lacks and her cell line. Cancer. Www.ScienceClarified.Com. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Jan. 2012. <http://www.scienceclarified.com/Bi-Ca/Cancer.html#b>. Cancer is a vicious disease. This taught me how to prevent cancer, how cancer is formed, and how to get rid of cancer. Cancer is formed by one mutated cell that turns into a cancer cell which makes other cancer cells. Henrietta had late stage of HPV which was proved later (from the HeLa cells) that it forms cervical cancer, which is what Henrietta had. Children with Polio. N.d. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 Apr. 2012.

<http://www.rotaryclubofcastlerock.org/IMUpload/polio%20picture.jpg>. This picture helped me tell a story of what exactly polio was. The polio vaccine was the first use of the HeLa cells. This child has polio and needs assistance to walk. This photograph was used in my timeline to show the year that polio vaccine was released. Cosmetic Products. N.d. Www.SoftMyHard.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Jan. 2012. <http://www.softmyhard.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/cosmetics skin-Care.jpg>. Cosmetics were tested on HeLa cells to see how cells reacted to the products. Almost every type of medicine and cosmetics has at one point been tested on the HeLa cells. This photo was used for visual aspects. Creation of the Jim Crow South. Www.ulm.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. 13 May 2012. <http://www.ulm.edu/~ryan/206/documents/jcrow.htm>. Jim Crow laws affected where Henrietta Lacks received her care. This source helped me learn what really happened with the Jim Crow Laws. This source helped my project to give me more insight on the issue Henrietta faced when deciding where to get her treatments. Culturing HeLa cells. N.d. plasticbiology.net. Web. 5 Jan. 2012. <http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ld6f0katfF1qed0my.jpg>. HeLa cells were grown by the billions and has helped science in many ways. This is a picture of culturing HeLa cells which contains about 1 million frozen cells. It was essential to my project by making it clear what the HeLa cells actually look like.

Deej. Mapping of Genes. N.d. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Apr. 2012. <http://4.bp.blogspot.com/ MiQHNL87jbA/TaBeGwTsicI/AAAAAAAAB_U/F3ComfvoS18/s1600/gene+m apping.jpg>. This is a diagram of gene mapping. The HeLa cells made gene mapping possible because of a chemical that got mixed into the cells solution that made the cells DNA be stripped apart so you could see each section. This photograph was used for visual aspects. Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act. N.d. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Jan. 2012. <http://www.drgurmankin.com/HIPAA%20Logo.GIF>. HIPPA was established due to the HeLa cells because there were no laws at that time that protected people from their medical information being releasing to the public. HIPPA was established in 1996, and this photo was used for visual aspects. Healthwise Incorporated. Cervical Cancer Diagram. N.d. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Apr. 2012. <http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5xjbBpHcg c/TCoLWx_PswI/AAAAAAAAAas/HV59Solub54/s1600/h9991514_001.jpg>. Henrietta Lacks had a bad case of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) that progressed into her rare form of cervical cancer. This diagram is showing the severity of the different stages of the HPV virus. This was used to give the audience information on what HPV is and how it progresses into cervical cancer.

History of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Www.hopkinsmedicine.org. The Johns Hopkins University, n.d. Web. 13 May 2012. <http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/about/history/>. Johns Hopkins Hospital was the only major hospital back in the 1950s that would accept black patients like Henrietta. This source was used to grasp information on the hospital that Henrietta went to to get treatments. This source was used as a source to gather more background knowledge on my topic. InfraGard National EMP SIG. N.d. Instant Access Networks, n.d. Web. 15 Apr. 2012. <http://www.sustaining-people.com/ESW/Images/nuclear explosion.gif>. The HeLa cells were used to test the effects of radiation to human cells. This photograph is how they would test the nuclear bombs with the HeLa cells inside, and this is a nuclear explosion. This photograph was used to show another example on how the HeLa cells were used. Interactive HeLa Timeline. CommonExperience.Sdsu.Edu. San Diego State U, n.d. Web. 17 Jan. 2012. <http://commonexperience.sdsu.edu/dus/commonexperience/timeline.a spx>. This site helped me add more information to my timeline, and it was very essential to my timeline because it had other events that werent yet present in my project. Events were placed on this timeline from when she was born till present day and the achievements HeLa has

made. Kaempffert, Waldemar. Science in Review; Both Dr.Salks Vaccine and Gamma Globulin Will Be Used in Campaign against Polio. New York Times [New York Times] 28 Feb. 1954, sec. E9: E9. This source was used to discover what other achievements it made. Researchers removed the nucleus from the HeLa cells and the cell wall, and the cells built a new nucleus and new cell wall. This source helped my project by providing another example of what the HeLa cells were used for. Skloot, Rebecca. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. New York: Broadway Paperbacks, 2010. Print. This book was served as a secondary source because Skloot really captured the elements of Henriettas life second-hand. I used a lot of this information from this book to start my project and to build on it. She interviewed Henrietta's children and family to gain information from all the aspects, and she really went into depth on figuring out more and more about Henrietta and her family. This source was used to gather information and understanding on this specific topic. This source helped my project by strengthening it and applying information to all three categories. Waugh, Sheela. Personal interview. 25 Feb. 2012.

Sheela Waugh is a cancer research scientist at Somologic in Boulder, Colorado, and her job is to work in the laboratory with HeLa cells and other types of cells. This interview helped me learn from a person who actually works with the cells, how theyre different and how they act differently than normal cells. This interview was to gain knowledge about the cells, and used as an additional interactive feature in my website.
