CHRISTS COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE

APPROACH
TO THE

COLLEGE

BY

ROAD

The College car-park is located off Hobson Street. There is only limited parking space available. Students and parents arriving by car with luggage are asked to limit their stay to not more than 90 minutes so that others may share the available space; after unloading please move your car to one of the City Centre car-parks. Overnight parking is not available in the College car-park. Parking in the street outside College is also not normally recommended; the local police pursue a vigorous policy in the City Centre and in the past vehicles have been towed away. In general, access and parking is much easier on Sundays than on other days. Approach to the College: for cars and other vehicles, there is only one access route to the College and that is to approach along St Andrews Street heading northwards. Because of the Citys one-way system, the most straightforward way is to start from Gonville Place (see below) and to turn left at the traffic lights by the Fire Station/Police Station into Parkside. At the next set of traffic lights go straight ahead into Parker Street. Continue, keeping to the left at the mini-roundabout (Drummer Street) and turn left into Emmanuel Street. This area is part of the bus station, but continue through to the end of the road and turn right at the T-junction into St Andrews Street. You will drive past a Restricted Entry sign in St Andrews Street at the junction with Emmanuel Street. This is a manoeuvre that is permitted for vehicles requiring access to Christs College. Driving past other No Entry signs in the City Centre is not permitted (or recommended). Traffic in the part of St Andrews Street closest to the College can be very congested: at the busiest times of the day there are many pedestrians and cyclists who should be treated with caution as they may not expect to meet cars. From St Andrews Street, pass the Great Gate of Christs College and immediately veer right into Hobson Street. The entrance to the College car-park will be found after about 100 metres on the right-hand side of Hobson Street (just after a disused cinema/Bingo Hall on the opposite side of the Street). To reach Cambridge City Centre from London and the South: leave the M11 at junction 11, drive through Trumpington. After 2 miles enter Cambridge (on Trumpington Road); at a double mini-roundabout turn right into Lensfield Road and ahead onto Gonville Place, with a green space on your left. Turn left into Parkside and proceed as above. To reach the City Centre from Huntingdon and the North: the simplest route is to follow the M11 round to the south of Cambridge, leave at junction 11 and proceed as for access from the South. Adventurous drivers may choose the shorter route of entering Cambridge along Huntingdon Road and finding their way along The Backs (Queens Road) and via Fen Causeway into Lensfield Road, Gonville Place and Parkside.

A copy of the University Map of Cambridge is enclosed. Please be aware that some maps found on the Internet may have the oneway systems marked incorrectly.
