Stability Tutorial 4 : Final GM and List (Including FSE)

1.

A ship has a solid GM of 1.02 metres and displaces 7,600 tonnes when a tank is partly filled with oil of RD 0.850. If the free surface moment of this tank is 1,250 tonnes-metres, calculate the fluid GM.
(Ans: Fluid GM 0.856 m)

2.

A ship has a displacement of 9,600 tonnes with KM 8.5 metres and KG 7.5 metres. A double-bottom tank of length 18 metres, width 14 metres has a centreline bulkhead. The starboard side of the tank is now filled to a depth of 0.6 metre with an oil of relative density 0.95. Calculate the resultant list.
(Ans: List 1o 29.1 to Starboard)

3.

A vessel of 8,000 tonnes displacement has a KM of 6.5 metres, KG of 5.7 metres. She is to lift a weight of 40 tonnes from the lower hold, KG 3.0 metres by means of her own lifting derrick whose head is 15 metres above the keel. Calculate the effective GM when discharging this weight if there is a slack tank containing fresh water on board with a transverse moment of inertia of 1,200 m4.
(Ans: Effective GM 0.59 metre)
