3.0 3.1

PRESSURE GARMENT ASSEMBLY Helmet Development Direction has been received from NASA to delete coatings from the helmets through PGA S/N 90 rather than through S/N 50 as originally directed. Procurement of the new coating facilit y is still not affected as this facility will be used for coatii.g visors for extra vehicular activity. The reported superclean G.E. material arrived at Airlock but was found to be no better than. previius material in that numerous gels wind material defects existed, even though the material was cleaner as far as foreign material is concealed. An ECP has been submitted to NASA to provide a spherical flight helmet for Ap tronaut Borman.

3.2 3

Electrical Harness and Bio Harness The formal FACI meeting scheduled for August 8, was replaced by a transmittal_ of chits from NASA to ILCI on August 21, ILCI is formulating replies to these chits.

3.3

CWG Electrical Harness These prototypes were shipped to NASA for evaluation in late August. The remaining prototype is being prepared for design limit testing in early September.

3.4

SIP Electrical Harness One prototype SIP Electrical Harness and one prototype SIP Bio Harness are scheduled for delivery to ILCI or. October 30: Long lead time items procurement by Cicoil has been authorized for the 15 production sets pending NASA apprival of the prototypes.

3.5

Wrist Disconnect Locking tabs with increased radii have been incorporated into present connector configuration and are being retrofitted into delivered PGA's per production scheduling. One set of large disconnects, i,e, right and left suit side and right and left glove side, has been delivered to ILCI for evaluation in respect to donning discomfort: experienced by several astronauts.

DOC. N0. 8812700411-13 DATE I September 1968

A Helmet Shell was sent to residual "molded in" fiber sent to NASA on August 27, hzve to slip the September

General Electric to determine the stress level. EM ILCI A 4173 was 1968 to inform them that ILCI would 1 due date to October 1.

Preliminary stress craze study is under way. Test chamber (bell jar) is assembled and ready for initial investigatiars as soon as the circular bending forms are available from the machine shop (SE Task 67-56). SE Task 67-57 - The three helmet shells are currently being machined at AirLock and are due to be sent to ILCI to be built up into helmet assemblies for chamber environmental aging. SE Task 67-54 - results from DVT gloves back fram NASA. Schirra's gloves were fabricated by Joe Young avd Tim Parker and are waiting shipment. Manufacturing training of personell to coat with Mosites 1066 under way. Specification ILCI 109-1-37 has been generated for coating procedures. ST drawing (ST31F342 generated for Mosites 1066.

Process specification number 109-1-36 was generated for compression molding of Fluorel gum stock. Prototype parts Lre fabricated for ITMG wrist rubber bands. The task should be tjasidered completed for materials engineering. Convolute "blooming" problem investigated support to manufacturing initiated in the form of a chemical analysis. Investigated dip process problems and correlated same to blooming problem. Investigation into DuPont "Viton" Latices and also non-flammable Viton compounds (1429, 1430. 1431). Investigation into this material included the following: a. b. c. d. e. Pigmented Beta Cloth Non-flammable Asbestos PBI (Polybesimidazole) Metal Fabric and Composite Blends WE Beta Yarn Products

Investigated a manufacturing problem encountered with RTV 630, and submitted the "Lot of Material" for verification testing. Test results indicate a slight specification defeciency and not a material problem.

Investigation continued with "Ladicote" coatings from North American Rockwell Corp. Samples submitted for canting are as follows: a. White Nylon Oxford b. Beta Cloth c. Primary Bladder Cloth Conducted extensive aging investigation on Fluorel overcoating of XN4802 dip stock. Preliminary test data indicates that the Fluorel overcoating does not degrade the XN4802 material upon acceleration aging. Generated Sheet, Fluorocarbon, Uncured drawing (ST17F355). Foam molding of Mosites 1062C uncured Fluorel HSB rings produced a reasonably good prototype with a finished weight of 8.2 grams. Process appears to be feasible for producing molding but preform mold requires additonal machining to complete study. Nitrosan blowing agent provf.d to be ineffective in foaming Fluorel L-3217-1 at 1.0 and 3.0 weight percent: Standard DMR & MRB action. Non-distructive inspection procedure submitted to NASA E, ILCI-A4167 on 8/27/67 reply requested by September 9, 1968. Conducted 8 days of training for production personnel on cementing and sealing techniques.

Extravehicular Visor Assembly During this reporting period, EVVA's SIN 007 and 008 were retrofitted to full flight configuration at the Cape. In addition, EVVA's SIN 004, 010, and 001 have been delivered to NASA with full flight configuration ( -04). Full flight as represented by the -04 configuration includes the thermal interfacing EVVA/ITMG Collar produced by ILC, coating of the shell assembly liming with CNR adhesive, and installation of fire proof velcro to--,;:he pivot mechanism spring assembly. Also included in this coafiTaration is a soft visor protective cover for flight use. Some problem areas were evolved as a result of the change in rittern design from that of LTV to IW collars in that location'of the eyelet which is now produced from aluminum stock did not permit proper closure of the sun visor, and consequently, waivers have been generated for
Sill's 004, 010 and 011. The problem has been reviewed and corrective action taken on a rework basis for collars already produced at IW . It is anticipated that collars on the aforementioned delivered EVVA's will be retrofitted with ;.he redesigned collars in the fL ld.

Yellow Rubbers Development (Sustaining Engineering Task 57-58) A static unit load test was accomplished with rubbers on and rubbers off. Test . consisted of applying 350 pounds of pressure at a steady rate (minimum accclez?tiem, e.g., constant uniform load); results indicating that the yellow rubbers do provide protection to the PGA Boot Sole Truss-Core. A pressurised manned test is currently about 20 percent complete with the subject having walked over a field of rough objects and having executed 1,000 cycles on the treadmill with no apparent damage. Drawings and procedure: for yellow rubber fabrication will be released upon receipt of Contract Change Authorization. During the next: reporting period, testing and test results will be completed.

6.8

Sole Suaport Improvement (Sustaining engineering Task 67-32) A torque flex test was accomplished to determine if there was any significant difference in the candidate spacer materials and the truss-core. The results were as follovrC: Based on an average of ten flex cycles, truss-core was 2.0 Ft/Lbs; unexpanded honeycomb was 2.20 Ft/Lbs; and-30 percent-, expanded honeycomb was 2.30 Ft/Lbs, utilizing a moment arm length of 8.0 inches. Although the spacer materials have significantly different flex characteristics by themselves, they tend to lose these characteristics when in the fluorel soi.e assembly.. In other words, the fluorel sole assembly by nature of the stiffness of the fluorel tends to command any flex capabilities. Unit load tests were accomplished, X-rayed, the samples were sectioned, and photographs taken of the impacted areas. Indications are that either semi-expanded or unexpanded honeycomb far exceeds the impact resistance of truss-core. During the :text reporting period, manned tests for flex failure and rough walking will be accomplished. Drawings, specifications and engineering release is planned during this period.
