Question: What are the effects of genetically modified crops in China?

Introduction: To genetically modify a crop, is the process of either replacing the genetics of a plant, or adding to the genetics that already exist. Usually when humans genetically modify crops it is to enhance something about the plant, which is highly beneficial. However, what people arent aware of is the negative side of what happens. Why humans genetically modify crops: Genetically modified crops were first introduced to China a few decades ago, but only started being used very commonly in the past five years. Genetically modified crops grow faster, enhances the color of the plant, enhances the amount of nutrients that the plant contains, enables the plant to stay fresh for longer, and even make it easier to extract substances from the plant to make medicine. One of the main reasons that the Chinese government supports genetically modified crops is because it feeds people faster. In China, malnourishment and hunger are large issues, so enhancing the nutrients and speeding up the growth is very helpful in order to feed its fast growing population. Huang Defang, an agricultural researcher said that the main reason that China genetically modifies crops is to protect the food and ecological security of Chinas food industry. Enhancing the color of the fruit is beneficial to merchants because people want to buy the food that looks riper, or stays fresh for longer. Some genetically modified crops are even made to transport easier when being exported because they stay fresh for longer, and are resistant to diseases. Effects on humans: While genetically modified crops are beneficial to society in general, they can severely harm the human body systems. The chemicals used to genetically modify a crop are highly toxic, and are 100% unnatural. Most plants contain chemicals that are highly toxic to the human body, but the amounts are so little it has no effect. But while the chemicals used to genetically modify crops enhance other qualities about the plant, they can also enhance those toxins, which can damage different organs and get into the blood system. If too many genetically modified crops are consumed the chemicals are capable of altering the DNA of one person, which can be passed on and cause birth defects. Other effects the chemicals have on humans is that its known to cause cancer and shorten peoples life span. Effects on the earth: The biggest impact that genetically modified crops have on the earth is when the chemicals get into the soil. For example, chemicals from decomposing genetically modified crops can make

their way into the soils nutrients. Some of the chemicals used on the plants are so strong that they can stay in the soil for centuries, and not decompose. These toxins can make their way into new plants that grow and harm the plant or harm species that eat it. If the toxins are a part of eroding soil, they can easily make their way into bodies of water, which puts all the fish and aquatic plants are put into danger as well. Another way that genetically modified crops affect the earth is through the production. The production uses a lot of petroleum, as well as dozens of toxic chemicals that get mixed together. Most of the petroleum and chemicals have to be combined through melting, which creates tons of thick, black smoke and is released into the air that adds to Chinas big problem of air pollution. Illegally, the producing companies are known to dump the chemical waste into rivers or other bodies of water, which puts that ecosystem into severe danger. How genetically modified crops specifically affect China: Because China has to feed its growing population of over one billion people, genetically modified crops are a big help. The can grow over five times faster than organic crops, which has been proved to have increased the amount of people being fed. Genetically modified crops can also have and increased amount of nutrients which helps malnourished children and families. By 2020, China hopes to produce 50 million tons of genetically modified grain to help feed their hungry people. China is a very large supporter of genetically modified crops also because of economic reasons. China does business with other countries involving genetically modified crops, and genetically modified crops save the agricultural section of the government lots of money because they no longer have to pay for extra food, or expenses like pesticides and fertilizer. China is aware that genetically modified crops are harmful to humans, but they dont always choose to display the negative effects to the public. However, in 2005 a law was made that all genetically modified crops must be labeled when sold. But people stopped buying them, so China quietly stopped enforcing the law. Just a few months ago, the agricultural research center of China conducted a survey to test the amount of people aware of the current situation with genetically modified crops. After the survey they reported an estimate that about 84% of the population was not aware that they were eating genetically modified crops. 60% of the people surveyed said they would not choose to buy genetically modified crops if they had the option of organic crops. And they estimated that 70% of the time genetically modified crops are not being labeled when sold. Conclusion: Genetically modified crops continue to spread around China as well as Asia. They have huge benefits to humans and society, but also have many negative effects as well. There is a question today about which side outweighs the other, but because humans arent paying enough attention to the negative side, the negative side could soon outweigh the positive.
