Lectionary c non-fest The Feast of Pentecost Day (Proper 1) INTROIT Ps.

104:24, 2728, 30; antiphon: Liturgical Text Pastor: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, People: and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Alleluia. Pastor: O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; People: the earth is full of your creatures. Pastor: These all look to you, People: to give them their food in due season. Pastor: When you give it to them, they gather it up; People: when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. Pastor: When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, People: and you renew the face of the ground. COLLECT OF THE DAY O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 11:19 [The Tower of Babel] The whole world spoke one language with the same words. As people traveled in the east, they found a plain in the country of Babylonia and lived there. Come," they said to one another, let us make bricks, and let us burn them hard." They used bricks for stones and asphalt for mortar. Then they said, Come, let us build a city for ourselves and a tower with its top in the sky, and let's make ourselves famous to keep from getting scattered all over the earth." The LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people built. "Look, one people!" the LORD said. "And they all speak one language. And this is only the beginning of what they'll do. Now nothing they plan to do will be too hard for them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they won't understand one another." So the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth, and they had to stop building the city. This is why it was called Babylon, because the LORD there made a babble of the language of the whole world. And from that place the LORD scattered them all over the earth. SECOND LESSON Acts 2:121 [The Day of Pentecost] The day of Pentecost came, and they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a violent blast of wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw tongues like flames that separated, and one rested on each of

them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and started to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. Jews who feared God had come from every nation under heaven to live in Jerusalem. When that sound came, the crowd gathered and was dumbfounded because each one heard the disciples speak his own language. Amazed and wondering, they asked, Don't all these who are speaking come from Galilee? And how does every one of us hear his own language he was born in Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people living in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia, Phrygia and Pamphilia, Egypt and the country near Cyrene in Libya, the visitors from Rome, Jews and those who have accepted the Jewish religion, people from Crete and Arabia? In our own languages we hear them tell about God's wonderful things." They were all amazed and puzzled. What can this mean?" they asked one another. Others sneered: "They're full of new wine." Then Peter got up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: Jews and all you who live in Jerusalem, understand this, and listen to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. Why, it's only nine in the morning. No, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about: In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Then your sons and your daughters speak God 's Word, your young men will have visions, and your old men will have dreams. In those days I will pour out My Spirit on My servants, both men and women, and they will speak God's Word. I will give you startling wonders in the sky above and marvelous signs on the earth below; blood and fire and a cloud of smoke; the sun will turn dark and the moon to blood before the coming of the Lord's great and splendid day. Then everyone who calls on the Lord's name will be saved. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON John 14:2331 [The Holy Spirit will teach you] Jesus answered him, If you love Me, you'll keep My word, and My Father will love you, and We will come to you and live with you. Anyone who doesn't love Me doesn't keep My words. And you are hearing, not what I say, but what the Father says Who sent Me. "I've told you this while I'm still with you. But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I told you. "I leave peace with you; I give you My peace. I don't give it to you as the world gives it. Don't be troubled or afraid. You heard Me tell you, 'I'm going away, but I'm coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you'd be glad I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. "I've told you this now before it happens, so that when it happens, you believe. I won't say much to you any more, because the ruler of the world is coming. He has no claim on Me. But I want the world to know I love the Father and am doing just what the Father ordered Me to do. "Come, let us go. PSALM Psalm 143 GRADUAL (Adapted from Matthew 28:7; Hebrews 2:7; Psalm 8:56) Pastor: Christ has risen from the dead. People: God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor. Pastor: You make known to me the path of life; People: in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures for evermore. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Proverbs 8:14, 2231 [Christ is the wisdom of God]

Isnt wisdom calling and understating raising her voice? Shes standing on top of the high place at a place where paths meet. Beside the gates to the city, where people enter the doors, shes calling loud: Im calling you, O men, and talking to you, O people. The LORD became My Father at the beginning of His way, long ago before any of His works. I was set up from everlasting, from the first, before the earth was. Before there was any ocean, I was born, before there were springs, or sources of water. Before the mountains were settled in their places and before the hills I was born. When He hadnt yet made the earth or its fields or the first dust of the world, when He set up the heavens, I was there. When He marked the horizon on the surface of the ocean, when He made firm the skies above, when He made the mighty fountains of the ocean, when He set limits for the sea and wouldnt let the water flow further than He ordered, when He set up the foundations of the earth then I was beside Him as the Master Workman. From day to day I was delighted, always happy before Him, rejoicing in His inhabited world, and delighted with people. EPISTLE LESSON Acts 2:14a, 2236 [Peter preaches Christ on Pentecost] Then Peter got up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: Men of Israel, listen to what I have to say: Jesus from Nazareth God showed you Who the Man is by doing miracles, startling wonders, and miraculous signs through Him among you, as you know. God definitely planned and intended to have Him betrayed, and so you had wicked men nail Him to a cross, and you killed Him. But God set aside the pains of death and raised Him death could not hold Him. David says of Him: I always see the Lord before Me. He is at My right hand so that I will not be shaken. And so My heart is glad, and My tongue rejoices, yes, even My body will rest hopefully, because You will not leave Me in the grave or let Your Loved One experience decay. You show Me ways of life. You will fill Me with joy by being with Me. Fellow Jews, I can tell you frankly our ancestor David died and was buried, and his grave is here to this day. He was a prophet and knew God had sworn to him to put One of his descendants on his throne. David saw what was ahead and said the Christ would rise again: He was not deserted when He was dead, and His body did not experience decay. God has raised this Jesus were all witnesses of that. Lifted up to Gods right hand and receiving from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, He has poured out what you see and hear. David didnt go up to heaven, but he says: The Lord says to my Lord, Sit at My right until I make Your enemies Your footstool. Then all the people of Israel should know its true that God made Him Lord and Christ - this Jesus Whom you crucified. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON John 8:4859 [Abraham rejoiced to see My day!] Arent we right, the Jews answered Him, when we say youre a Samaritan and theres a demon in you? Theres no demon in Me, Jesus answered. No, I honor My Father, but you dishonor Me. Im not trying to get glory for Myself. Theres One Who wants Me to have it, and Hes the judge. I tell you the truth, if you keep My Word, you will never see death. Now we know theres a demon in you, the Jews told Him. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, If you keep My Word, you will

never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and the prophets died. Who do you think you are? If I glorify Myself, Jesus said, My glory is nothing. It is My Father Who glorifies Me, He of Whom you say, Hes our God. You dont know Him, but I know Him. And if I would say I dont know Him, Id be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I observe His Word. Your father Abraham was delighted to know of My day; he saw it and was glad. Youre not fifty years old yet. the Jews said to Him, and Abraham has seen you? I tell you the truth, Jesus told them, before Abraham ever was born, I am. Then they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus hid Himself and left the temple. Pastor: The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; People: your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. COLLECT OF THE DAY O Lord, Father of all mercy and God of all comfort, You always go before and follow after us. Grant that we may rejoice in Your gracious presence and continually be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 1 Kings 17:1724 [Elijah raises the widows son at Zarephath] Later the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, got sick. He got so very sick that finally there was no breath left in him. Leave me alone, man of God, she told Elijah. Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my boy? Give me your boy, he asked her. He took him from her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. Then he cried to the LORD. LORD my God, he said, would You also bring misery on the widow Im staying with by killing her boy? Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and called to the LORD, O LORD my God, please make this boy live again. The LORD did what Elijah asked, and the life of the boy returned again to his body and so he lived. Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room of the house, and gave him to his mother. Look, Elijah said, your boy is alive. Now Im convinced, the woman told Elijah, you are a man of God and the LORDs Word you speak is the truth. EPISTLE LESSON Galatians 1:1124 [Paul is called by Gods grace to preach to the Gentiles.] I tell you, my fellow Christians, the good news I told is not a human idea, because no man gave it or taught it to me, but Jesus Christ revealed it to me. You have heard what I used to do when I still lived according to the Jewish religion, how violently I persecuted Gods church and tried to destroy it and how in this Jewish religion I was ahead of many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the

traditions of my ancestors. But God had appointed me before I was born, and in His grace He called me. And when he kindly decided to show me His Son so that I would tell the good news of Him among the Gentiles, I didnt talk it over with other men or go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before me, but I went immediately to Arabia and then came back to Damascus. After three years I went up to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him fifteen days. But I didnt see any of the other apostles, only James, the Lords brother. (And I declare before God Im writing you no lie.) Then I went to the regions of Syria and Cilicia. In Judea the churches of Christ didnt know me personally. They only heard people say; The man who use to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy, and they praised God for what they saw in me. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 7:1117 [The raising of the widows son at Nain] Soon after this, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd went with Him. As He came near the gate of the town, a dead man was carried out. He was his mothers only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, He felt sorry for her. Dont cry, He told her. He went up to the open coffin and touched it, and the men who were carrying it stood still. Young man, He said, I tell you, wake up. The dead man sat up and started to talk. And Jesus gave him to his mother. They were all overawed and praised God. A great prophet has risen among us, they said, and, God has come to help His people. This story about Jesus spread all over the country of the Jews and in all the surrounding territory. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 2 Samuel 11:2612:10, 1314 [Davids repentance and absolution] When Uriahs wife heard her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband. When the mourning was over, David sent for her and took her to his home, and she became his wife; and they had a son. But what David did was wrong before the LORD. And the Lord sent Nathan to David. Nathan came to him and said, There were two men in a city. One was rich and the other was poor. The rich man had many sheep and cows, but the poor man had only one little female lamb he had bought and raised. It grew up with him and his children. It used to eat what little food he had and drink from his cup. It rested in his arms and was like a daughter to him. A man came to visit the rich man, and he didnt like to take any of his own sheep or cattle to prepare food for the

traveler who had come to him. So he took the poor mans lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him. David got very angry at the man. As the LORD lives, he told Nathan, the man who did this must die! And he must pay back four times the price of the lamb because he did this and had no pity. You are the man! Nathan told David. The LORD, the God of Israel, says this: I anointed you king of Israel and rescued you from Saul. I gave you your masters family and put your masters wives into your arms. I gave you the people of Israel and Judah. And if that isnt enough, I would give you more like that. Why did you despise what the LORD says, and do what is wrong before Him? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your wife. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. And now the sword will not leave your family because you despised Me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. I have sinned against the LORD, David said to Nathan. The LORD also has put away your sin, Nathan answered David. You will not die. But since you have made the LORDs enemies contemptuous by this deed, the son you have must die. EPISTLE LESSON Galatians 2:1521; 3:1014 [The righteous shall live by faith.] We were born Jews and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person cannot be declared righteous by doing what the Law says but only through believing in Jesus Christ. So we also believed in Jesus Christ in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law because not one person will be declared righteous by the works of the Law. Now if we who want to be declared righteous in Christ are found to be sinners like the non-Jews, does Christ encourage us to sin? Never! But if I build you up again what Ive torn down, I make myself a sinner. By the Law I died to the Law, to live for God. I was crucified with Christ, and I dont live anymore, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in my body believing in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me. I dont reject Gods grace. You see, if we could get righteousness through the Law, then Christ died for nothing. There is a curse on all who depend on doing what the Law says, because it is written: Cursed is everyone who doesnt follow and do everything written in the book of the Law. It is clear that no one is declared righteous before God by the Law, because the righteous will live by faith. But the Law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says: If you do these things, you will find life in them. Christ paid the price to free us from the curse of the Law when He was cursed for us (it is written: Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree) so that in Jesus Christ Abrahams blessing would come to the nations and we would receive the promised Spirit through faith. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 7:368:3 [The forgiveness of a sinful woman] One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. He went into the Pharisees home and reclined for the meal. In the town there was a sinful woman. When she found out He was eating at the Pharisees home, she brought a flask of perfume, and stood behind Him at His feet. She was weeping and started to wet His feet with her tears. Then with the hair of her head she dried His feet, kissed them, and poured perfume on them. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, If He were a prophet, He

would know who is touching Him and what kind of woman she is. Shes a sinner. Simon, Jesus answered him, I have something to tell you. Say it, Teacher, he said. Two men owed a moneylender some money: One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they couldnt pay it back, he was kind enough to cancel the debt for both of them. Now, which of them will love him more? I suppose, Simon answered, the one who had the bigger debt canceled. Youre right, Jesus told him. Then, turning to the woman, He said to Simon, You see this woman? I came into your home, and you gave Me no water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss, but ever since I came in, she hasnt stopped kissing My feet. You poured no oil on My head, but she poured perfume on My feet. Thats why I tell you her sins are forgiven, many as they are. You see, she has loved much. Of course, he to whom little is forgiven loves only a little. The He said to her, Your sins are forgiven. His fellow guests began to ask among themselves, Who is this that he should even forgive sins? Jesus said to the woman, Your faith saved you. Go in peace! After this Jesus traveled from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of Gods kingdom. The twelve were with Him. Also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary, also called the woman from Magdala (seven demons had gone out of her); Johanna, the wife of Herods manager Chusa; Susanna; and many other women. They supported Jesus and His disciples with their property. GRADUAL Pastor: People: Pastor: People: (Rom. 10:8b, 10) The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, the word of faith that we proclaim. Cast out all sins and evil desires from us, and pour into our hearts Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all blessedness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 65:19 [The Lord answers His peoples prayer] I will let those search for Me who didnt ask for Me. I will let those find Me who didnt look for Me. I say, Here I am, here I am! to a people who didnt call on My name. All day I stretch out My hands to a rebellious people who are living in a way that isnt good and following their own plans. These people regularly provoke Me to My face, sacrificing in gardens and burning incense on bricks. They sit in graves and spend their nights in caves. They eat hogs meat and make broth of unclean food in their pots. They say, Stay where you are. Dont touch me. Im too holy for you. These are smoke in My nose, a smoldering fire that burns all day. You see, it is written in front of Me: I will not be inactive but pay back. I will pay back into their bosom for both their wrongs and their fathers wrongs, says the LORD. because they sacrifice on the mountains and insult Me on the hills. So I will first measure out their wages into their laps. The LORD says this: As juice is found in a cluster of grapes and someone says, Dont destroy it, because theres something good in it, this is what Ill do for My servants in order not to destroy them all. I will bring out a Descendant from Jacob and from Judah One Who will inherit My mountains. My chosen ones will inherit it, and My servants will live there.

EPISTLE LESSON Galatians 3:234:7 [The Law and the Gospel] Before faith came, we were under the Law, guarded in prison for the faith that was to be revealed. Then the Law has been our guardian so that we would come to Christ and be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. You are all Gods children through faith in Christ Jesus, because all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is no Jew or Greek, no slave or free person, no man or woman youre all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abrahams descendants and heirs of the blessing God promised. Now, I say that as long as the heir is a child, he is no better than a slave, although he owns everything. He is under guardians and managers until the day set by his father. So it is with us. When we were children, we were slaves under the elementary ways of the world. But when the right time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, to free those under the Law and make us His sons. And because you are sons, God sent into our hearts the Spirit of His Son, Who cries, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a son. And if you are His son, God has made you His heir. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 8:2639 [Jesus casts the demon into the herd of pigs.] They landed in the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. When He stepped out on the shore, a man from the town who had demons in him met Him. He had worn no clothes for a long time. He wouldnt stay in a house but in the burial places. When he saw Jesus, he screamed and bowed down before Him. Let me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God, he shouted. I beg You, dont torture me. Jesus had been ordering the unclean sprit to come out of the man. For a long time it had a firm hold on him. He had been bound with chains on hands and feet and had been kept under guard, but he would tear the chains and be driven by the demon into lonely places. What is your name? Jesus asked him. Six Thousand, he answered, because many demons had gone into him. They begged Him not to order them to go into the bottomless pit. There was a herd of many hogs feeding on the hillside. So they begged Him to let them go into these. He let them. The demons came out of the man and went into the hogs, and the heard stampeded down the cliff into the sea and was drowned. But when those who had taken care of the hogs saw what had happened, they ran away and told about it in the town and in the country. The people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, now sitting dressed and in his right mind at Jesus feet; and they were frightened. Those who had seen it told them how the man plagued by demons had been made well. Then all the people of the surrounding country of Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because terror had gripped them. He got into a boat and started back. Now the man from whom the demons had gone out begged Jesus to let him be with Him. But He sent him away and told him, Go home and tell how much God has done for you. COLLECT OF THE DAY Lord of all power and might, author and giver of all good things, graft into our hearts the love of Your name and nourish us with all goodness that we may love and serve our

neighbor; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 1 Kings 19:9b21 [Elijahs calling of Elisha] Then the Lord spoke to him saying, What are you doing here, Elijah? He asked him. Ive been very zealous for the LORD, the God of armies, he answered, because Israel has forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. Im the only one left, and theyre trying to kill me! Go out, He said, and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Then, as the LORD was passing by, a great and mighty wind was tearing mountains and shattering rocks ahead of the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind, came an earthquake, but the LORD wasnt in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD wasnt in the fire. And after the fire there was a gentle quiet Voice. When Elijah heard that, he wrapped his face in his coat, went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then the Voice spoke to him saying, What are you doing here, Elijah? I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of armies, he answered, because Israel has forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. Now Im the only one left, and theyre trying to kill me. Make your way back to the wilderness near Damascus, the LORD told him, and when you come there, anoint Hazael as king of Aram (Syria), anoint Jehu, Nimshis son, as king of Israel, and Elisha, Shaphats son of Abel-meholah, as prophet in your place. If anyone escapes from Hazaels sword, Jehu will kill him, and if anyone escapes from Jehus sword, Elisha will kill him. But I will leave in Israel 7,000, none of whom have knelt before Baal, none of whom have kissed him. When Elijah left, he found Elisha, Shaphats son. He was plowing behind 12 yoke of oxen; he himself was using the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his coat on him. So he left the oxen and ran after Elijah. Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, he said, and then I will follow you. Go back, he answered him. What have I done to keep you? Elisha left him, took a yoke of oxen, butchered them, and using the yokes of the oxen, boiled the meat, and gave it to the people to eat. Then he started to follow Elijah and serve him. EPISTLE LESSON Galatians 5:1, 1325 [Living in the liberty of Christ] Christ has freed us so that well be free. Stand firm, then, and dont get caught again under a yoke of slavery. You were called to be free, my fellow Christians. Only dont use your freedom as a chance to sin as you like, but in love serve one another. You keep the whole Law when you do one thing: love your neighbor as yourself. But if you continue to bite and devour one another, be careful, or youll be destroyed by one another. I say, follow the Spirit, and you will not do what the flesh wants. What the flesh wants is against the Spirit, and what the Spirit wants is against the flesh, because they are opposed to each other and so keep you from doing what you want to do. But if the Spirit leads you, you are not under the Law. Now, you know the works of the flesh. They are: sexual sin, uncleanness, wild living, worshiping of idols, witchcraft, hate, wrangling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, quarreling, divisions, envy, drunkenness,

carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, those who do such things will have no share in Gods kingdom. But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace. He makes us patient, kindly, good, faithful, gentle, and gives us self-control. Theres no law against such things. But if we belong to Christ Jesus, we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 9:5162 [The Son of Man comes to save lives] As the time was coming nearer for Him to be taken up to heaven, He showed He was determined to go to Jerusalem. He sent messengers ahead of Him. They went and stopped in a village of the Samaritians to arrange a place for Him to stay. But the people didnt welcome Him, because He was going to Jerusalem. When His disciples James and John saw this, they asked, Lord, do You want us to order fire to come down from heaven and burn them up? But He turned and sternly corrected them. So they went on to another village. As they were walking along the road, a man said to Him, I will follow You anywhere You go. Foxes have holes, Jesus told him, and birds in the air have nests, but the Son of Man doesnt have a place to lay His head. He told another man, Follow Me. Lord, first let me go and bury my father, he asked. But Jesus told him, Let the dead bury their dead. But you go and tell about Gods kingdom. I will follow You, Lord, said another, but first let me say good-by to my people at home. Anyone who lays his hand on a plow, Jesus answered him, and keeps looking back isnt fit for Gods kingdom. Continue to send Your messengers to preserve Your people in true peace that, by the preaching of Your Word, Your Church may be kept free from all harm and danger; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 66:1014 [Rejoice with Jerusalem] Rejoice with Jerusalem; delight in her, all you who love her. Be glad with her, all you who are mourning over her So that you may nurse and be satisfied with her comforting breast, so that you may nurse to your hearts delight at her rich bosom. The LORD says: I am offering you peace like a river and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent. You will nurse, be carried at the side, and be cuddled on the knees. As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you, and you will be comforted in Jerusalem. When you see this, you will be delighted, and your limbs will flourish like young grass. Then it will be known that the LORDs hand is with His servants but that He punishes His enemies. EPISTLE LESSON Galatians 6:110, 1418 [Let us do good to all] My fellow Christians, if you find anyone doing wrong, you who are spiritual should set him right. But be gentle and keep an eye on yourself; you may be tempted, too. Help one another carry these burdens, and so do everything the Law of Christ demands. If anyone thinks hes something when hes nothing, hes fooling himself. Everyone should

examine his own work. Then he will have something in himself that deserves praise, without comparing himself with anyone else. Everyone will have to carry his own burden. If someone teaches you the Word, share all your good things with your teacher. Dont make a mistake; you cant fool God. Whatever you sow, youll reap. If you sow to please your own flesh, you will from your flesh reap destruction. If you sow to please the Spirit, you will from the Sprit reap everlasting life. Let us not get tired of doing good. At the right time well reap if we dont give up. So whenever we have a chance, let us do good to everyone but especially to the household of believers. May I never boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom the world is crucified to me and I to the world. No circumcision or the lack of it is anything, but only the new life that is created. Peace and mercy on all who follow this rule, that is on Gods Israel. From now on no one should make trouble for me, because I have on my body the scars of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, my fellow Christians. Amen. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 10:120 [Jesus sends out the seventy-two] After this the Lord appointed 72 others and sent them out in pairs to go ahead of Him to every town and place where He intended to go. Theres much grain to be harvested, but there are only a few workers, He told them, Ask the Owner of the crop to send out workers to bring in His grain. Go! Im sending you like lambs among wolves. Dont carry a purse, a bag, or shoes, and dont stop to greet anyone on the way. When you go into a house, say first, May there be peace in this house. If a man of peace lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will come back to you. Stay in that house and eat and drink whatever they have, since a worker earns his pay. Dont move from one house to another. When you go into any town and the people welcome you, eat what they serve you. Heal the sick that are there, and tell people, Gods kingdom has come close to you! But if you go into a town and they dont welcome you, go out on its streets and say, The dust of your town has clung to our feet were wiping it off in protest against you! But realize this: Gods kingdom has come near you! I tell you, on that Day it will be easier for Sodom than for that town. Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you Bethsaida! If the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. In the judgment it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? You will go down to hell. Anyone who hears you hears Me, and anyone who rejects you rejects Me. But anyone who rejects Me rejects Him Who sent Me. The 72 came back delighted. Lord, they said, even the demons do what we tell them in Your name. I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning, He told them. You know, Ive given you the power to step on snakes and scorpions and to trample on all the enemys power, and nothing will hurt you. Only dont be glad that the spirits obey you but that your names are written in heaven. GRADUAL Pastor: People: Pastor: Rom. 10:15b, 18b; Is. 52:7b, alt. Dont do what the people do in Egypt, where you lived, and dont do what the

people are doing in Canaan, where Im taking you, or follow their customs. You must keep My rules and follow them. I am the LORD your God. Follow My rules and My decisions. By doing them a man lives. Dont use My name to swear to a lie and so make the name of your God an unholy thing. I am the LORD. Dont get anything from anyone by extortion, and dont rob. Dont hold back the wages of a hired man overnight. Dont curse the deaf. Dont put anything in the way of a blind person to make him stumble; but respect your God. I am the LORD. Dont be unjust in passing a sentence, giving special favors to the poor or honors to the great, but be fair in judging your neighbor. Dont go around slandering among your people. Dont take a stand that endangers your neighbors life. I am the LORD. Dont hate another Israelite in your heart. Correct him, so you will not be guilty of a sin on account of him. Dont avenge yourself or hold a grudge against your fellow Israelites, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

EPISTLE LESSON Colossians 1:114 [In Christ we have redemption] PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST JESUS by Gods will, and our fellow Christian Timothy, to the holy and faithful fellow believers in Christ at Colossae: May God our Father give you grace and peace. In our prayers for you we are always thanking God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, because we have heard how you believe in Christ Jesus and love all the holy people, and what you hope for is stored up for you in heaven. You heard of it before when you were told the truth of the good news that has come to you. As it is producing fruit and growing all over the world, so it did among you since the day you heard it and came to know that the grace of God truly means, as you learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is loyally serving Christ in our place. And hes the one who told us about your love in the Spirit. That is why, since the day we heard of it, we havent stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with a clear knowledge of His will by giving you every kind of spiritual wisdom and understanding so that you live worthy of the Lord, aiming to please Him in every way as you produce every kind of good work and grow in the knowledge of God. We ask Him according to His wonderful might to strengthen you with all the power you need to endure patiently whatever comes as you joyfully thanked the Father, Who made you fit to share the inheritance of the holy people in the light. He rescued us from the tyranny of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, Who paid the ransom to forgive our sins and set us free. GOSPEL LESSON Luke 10:2537 [The parable of the Good Samaritan] Then an expert in the Law came forward to test Jesus. Teacher, he asked, what do I do to inherit everlasting life? What is written in the Law? Jesus asked him. What

do you read there? Love the Lord your God with all your heart, he answered, and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all you mind, and your neighbor as yourself. Youre right, Jesus told him. Do that you will live. But he wanted to justify himself. So he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? In reply, Jesus said: A man going from Jerusalem down to Jericho fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, stuck him blow after blow, and went away leaving him half dead. Just at that time a priest happened to go along that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So did also a Levite who came to the place: he looked at him and passed by on the other side. Then a Samaritan, as he was traveling, came near him, and when he saw him, he felt sorry for him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. Take care of him, he said, and anything else you spend on him Ill repay you when I come back. Which of those three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who had fallen into the hands of the robbers? The one who was kind enough to help him, he said. Go and do as he did, Jesus told him. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 18:110a (10b14) [Abraham receives three visitors who promise him a son.] The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre as he was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day. He looked up, and there he saw three men standing not far from him. When he saw them, he ran from his tent door to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. My lord, he said, if youre kind to me, please dont pass by your servant. Somebody will get a little water; then wash your feet, and rest under the tree. Let me get a bit of food for you to refresh yourselves; then go on. It was for this you were passing by your servant. Do as you say, they answered. So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. Quick, he said, get three measures of fine flour, knead it, and make cakes. Then Abraham ran to the herd, took a calf that was tender and good, and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it. Then he took cheese and milk and the veal he had prepared and set these before them. Then he waited on them under the tree as they ate. Where is your wife Sarah? they asked him. There in the tent, he answered. I will certainly come back to you, He said, at about the time it takes to have a child, and then your wife Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Abraham and Sarah were old and getting along in years, and Sarah had had her change of life. And so Sarah laughed to herself. Now that Im worn out, she said. and my lord is old too, should I again enjoy myself? The LORD asked Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh and say, Can I really have a child when Im so old? Is anything too wonderful for the LORD? I will come back to you at about the time it takes to have a child, and then Sarah will have a son. EPISTLE LESSON Colossians 1:2129 [In Christ, we have been reconciled.]

Once you were strangers to God and in your hearts His enemies, doing wicked things, but now by dying in His human body He has made you friends in order to have you stand before Him without sin or fault or blame if, of course, you continue in your faith to stand firm on the foundation and are not moved from the hope of the good news you heard. This has been preached to every creature under heaven, and I, Paul, was made its servant. I delight to suffer for you now and in my body am enduring what still needs to be endured of Christs sorrows for His body, which is the church. God made me its servant when He gave me this work among you in order to do everything God meant to do by His Word. This was a mystery hidden from the people of all the ages but now shown to His holy people, whom God wanted to tell how rich among the non-Jews is the glory of this hidden truth; Christ, Hope of glory, is in you. Him we preach, warning everyone and teaching everyone, using every kind of wisdom, in order to present everyone perfect in Christ. This is what Im working for, struggling like an athlete by His power that is working mightily in me. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 10:3842 [Jesus and Mary and Martha] As they were walking along, Jesus came to a village where a woman by the name of Martha welcomed Him to her home. She had a sister by the name of Mary. She sat down at Jesus feet and listened to what He said. But Martha was worried about all she had to do for them. So she came and asked, Lord, dont You care that my sister has left me and I have to do the work alone? Now tell her to help me. Martha, Martha, the Lord answered her, you worry and fuss about a lot of things. But theres only one thing you need. Mary has made the right choice, and it must not be taken away from her. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 18: 1719; 2033 [Abraham intercedes for Sodom] The LORD said: Should I hide from Abraham what Im going to do, seeing that Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation and in him all the nations on earth will be blessed? I have known him as a friend, so that he may order his children and his family after him to keep the LORDs ways and do what is right and fair, so that the LORD may do for Abraham what He promised him. The LORD continued: The outcry over Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sins are so terrible, Im going down to see whether or not theyve done everything Im told by those who cry to Me. I want to know. The men left and went on to Sodom while Abraham kept standing before the LORD. Abraham came closer and asked, Will you really wipe out the innocent with the wicked? What if there are fifty innocent people in the town? Will You wipe them out? Wont You spare the place for the fifty innocent people who are there? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to kill the innocent people with the wicked and treat the innocent like the wicked! Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of the whole world do right? If I find fifty innocent people in the town of Sodom, the LORD said, Ill spare the whole place for their sake. Here I dare to talk to my LORD, and Im dust and ashes, Abraham answered. What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will You destroy the whole city on account of the five? Ill not destroy it if I find forty-

five there, He said. Abraham talked to Him again. What if forty are found there? he said. For the sake of forty, Ill not do it, He answered. Dont be angry, my LORD, if I talk again, he said. Suppose thirty are found there. If I find thirty there, He answered, Ill not do it. Here I dare to talk to my LORD, he said. Suppose twenty are found there. For the twenty Ill not destroy it, He answered. Dont be angry, my LORD, he said, if I talk just once more. Suppose ten are found there. Ill not destroy it. He answered, for the sake of the ten. When the LORD finished talking to Abraham, He left, and Abraham went home. EPISTLE LESSON Colossians 2:619 [In Christ dwells the fullness of God.] Just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, so live in Him. In Him be rooted, built up, and strengthened in your faith, as you were taught, and overflow with thanksgiving. Be careful or somebody will capture you by his philosophy, tricking you with meaningless words, as he follows the traditions of men and the principles of this world rather than Christ. In Him, that is, in His body, lives all the fullness of the Deity. And in Him, who is the Head of all rulers and powers, you are complete. In Him you also were circumcised, not by human hands but by putting away the sinful body by the circumcision of Christ since in baptism you were buried with Him and raised with Him through faith produced by the power of God, who raised Him from the dead. Yes, you who were dead in sins and in your uncircumcised bodies He has made alive with Him when He forgave us all our sins, wiped out the Laws demands that were against us and took them out of the way by nailing them to the cross. He stripped rulers and powers of their armor and made a public show of them as He triumphed over them in Christ. Then nobody should say you are wrong in what you eat or drink or do on a festival, on the first of the month, or on a Sabbath. These have been a shadow of the coming things, but the reality is in Christ. No one who likes to be humble and worship angels should condemn you. Such a person goes on searching his visions and without a reason is puffed up by his fleshly mind. He doesnt cling to the Head, Who by being in touch with the whole body nourishes it and by its ligaments binds it together to make it grow as God gives it growth. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 11:113 [The Lords instruction on prayer] Once Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He stopped, one of his disciples asked Him, Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples. He told them, When you pray, say; Father, may Your name be kept holy, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us every day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we, too, forgive everyone who sins against us. And dont bring us into temptation. Suppose one of you have a friend, Jesus said to His disciples, and you go to him at midnight and ask him, Friend, lend me three loaves. A friend on mine on a trip has dropped in on me, and I have nothing to serve him. Will he answer from within, Dont bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I cant get up and give you anything? I tell you, although he wont get up and give you anything even though he is your friend, yet because you persist, hell get up and give you

anything you need. So I tell you: Ask and it will be given to you. Search and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened for you. Anyone who asks receives; anyone who searches finds; and anyone who knocks, the door will be opened for him. If your son asks you, his father, for a fish, will any of you give him a snake instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will you give him a scorpion? Now if you, wicked as you are, know enough to give your children good gifts, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? COLLECT OF THE DAY O Lord, grant us wisdom to recognize the treasures You have stored up for us in heaven, that we may never despair but always rejoice and be thankful for the riches of Your grace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Ecclesiastes 1:2, 1214; 2:1826 [All earthly things are vain] Absolutely pointless! says the preacher. Absolutely pointless! Everything is pointless. I, the preacher, have been king of Israel in Jerusalem. I used my wisdom to study, search and explore everything done under the sun. Its a sorry task God has given people to weary themselves with. I have seen everything that is done under the sun. Its all pointless, like trying to catch the wind. And I hated everything I had worked for under the sun. I have to leave it to the man who comes after me. And who knows if he will be wise or foolish? He will take control of everything under the sun for which I worked and used my skill. This also is pointless. Then I started to despair of everything I worked for under the sun. Here is a man who has worked hard with intelligence, knowledge, and skill only to turn it over to one who didnt work for it and so it belongs to him. This also is pointless and a terrible tragedy. What does a man get for all his work and striving with which he wearies himself under the sun? All his life is painful, and his work is troublesome. Even at night his mind cant rest. This also is pointless. There is nothing better among men than eating, drinking, and finding satisfaction in your work. I also saw that this comes from Gods hand. Without God, who can eat and enjoy himself? To anyone who pleases Him He gives wisdom, knowledge, and pleasure. But to one who lives in sin He gives the job of gathering and collecting wealth only to turn it over to one who pleases God. This also is pointless, like trying to catch the wind. EPISTLE LESSON Colossians 3:111 [Put on the new self.] Now if you were raised with Christ, be eager for the things that are above, where Christ is sitting at the right of God. Keep your mind on things above, not on earthly things. You see, you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, your Life, appears, then you, too, will appear with Him in glory. Kill, then what is earthly in you: sexual sin, uncleanness, passion, evil lust, and greed, which is idol worship; these are bringing down Gods anger. Once you also practiced them when you lived in them. But now also get rid of all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, and dirty talk.

Dont lie to one another, seeing that you have put away your old self and its ways and have put on the new self, which is continually renewed in knowledge to be like Him Who created him. Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is everything and in everything. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 12:1321 [The parable of the rich fool] Teacher, someone in the crowd said to Him, tell my brother to give me my share of the property our father left us. Man, He asked him, who appointed Me to be your judge or to divide your property? Be careful, He told the people. Guard against every kind of greed. Even if you have more than enough, your property doesnt give you life. Then He told them a story: A rich man had good crops on his land. What am I going to do? he said to himself. I have no place to store my crops, Finally he said, This is what Ill do: Ill tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and goods in them. Then Ill say to myself, You have a lot of good things stored up for many years. Take life easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. But God said to him, You fool, tonight you die. And what youve prepared who will get it? Thats how it is when you store up goods for yourself and arent rich toward God. GRADUAL Pastor: People: Pastor: People: (Rom. 10:15b, 18b; Is. 52:7b, alt.) (Ps. 147:811; antiphon: Ps. 147:7) Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry. His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty and merciful God, it is by Your grace that we live as Your people who offer acceptable service. Grant that we may walk by faith, and not by sight, in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 15:16 [God promises Abraham descendents as numerous as the stars in the sky.] After this the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision. Dont be afraid, Abram, He said. I am your Shield. Your reward is very great. Lord GOD, Abram asked, what will You give me? Im leaving no children, and Eliezer of Damascus will get the property of my household. You have given me no children, Abram added, so a member of my household will get my property. He will not get it, the LORD told him, but your own child will get your property. Then He took him outside. Now look at the sky. He said, and count the stars if you can. Then He told him, That is how many descendants you will have. Abram believed the LORD, and so the LORD counted it to him as righteousness. EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 11:116 [Old Testament examples of faith] Faith is being sure of the things we hope for, being convinced of the things we cant see. The men of long ago were approved of in this faith. By faith we know God made the world by His Word so that what we see wasnt made of what can be seen. By faith Abel brought to God a better sacrifice than Cain and was declared to be righteous, when God approved his offerings. He died, but by his faith he is still speaking to us. By faith Enoch was taken away without dying and couldnt be found, because God had taken him. We are assured that God was pleased with him before he was taken. But it is impossible to please God without faith. If you come to God, you must believe He exists and will always reward those who search for Him. By faith Noah, when he was warned about the things no one could foresee, respected God and built an ark to save his family, and by such a faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the

righteousness that comes by faith. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to leave home and go to a place he would receive as an inheritance, and he left without knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as a stranger in the promised land, as though it belonged to someone else, and lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who had the same promise he had. He was looking for the city with foundations, the one God built and made. By faith Sarah, even though she was too old, got the strength to have a child because she believed she could trust Him Who had promised. And so, although he had become physically unable to have a child, one man had many descendants, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore that no one can count. All these died in faith without having received what was promised. But they saw it far ahead and welcomed it, and they confessed they were strangers and travelers on earth. Those who talk that way show theyre looking for a country of their own. If their hearts had been in the country they left, they could have found an opportunity to go back. Instead, they were longing for a better country I mean heaven. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, because He has prepared a city for them. HOLY GOSPEL LESSON Luke 12:2234 (3540) [Seek first the kingdom of God] That is why I tell you, He said to His disciples: Dont worry about what youll eat to keep alive or what youll wear on your bodies. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Look at the crows. They dont sow or cut grain, they have no storeroom or barn; and yet God feeds them. Youre worth much more than birds. And can any of you by worrying add anything to your life? If you cant do even the smallest thing, why worry about the rest? See how the flowers grow. They dont work or spin. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory didnt dress like one of them. If thats how God dresses the grass, which lives in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into a stove, how much more certainly will He put clothes on you who trust Him so little? So dont just think of what youll eat or drink, and dont worry. The people in the world run after all these things, but your Father knows you need them. Only seek Gods kingdom, and youll get these things, too. Dont be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell what you have and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves purses that dont wear out and a treasure that will never by used up in heaven, where no thief gets near it and no moth destroys it. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Be ready for action with belts fastened and lamps burning, like men waiting for their master when he comes back from a wedding, so that they can open the door for him the moment he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds watching when he comes. I tell you hell certainly fasten his belt, have them lie down for a meal, and come and serve them. Even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward morning and finds them that way, blessed are they. You know if the owner of a house had known just when the burglar was coming, he would not have let anyone break into his house. You, too, get ready, because the Son of Man is coming when you dont expect Him. GRADUAL Pastor: (Ps. 34:9, 19, alt.) Fear the Lord, you his saints,
