Knowing your natural disasters both Natural and Human Made

1

What is a Natural Disaster?
PDF Created with deskPDF PDF Writer - Trial :: http://www.docudesk.com

• A natural disaster is any sort of disaster that can come in numerous forms and intensities. • Preparing for a natural disaster is crucial for the survival of anyone involved. • Natural Disasters can and will happen all over the world and at any time of the day or year.

Tornadoes
• Tornadoes can occur in the periods between June and October • The classification system of Tornadoes is called the Fujita scale, and can range from 1 (mildest) – 5 (severe) • Differ from hurricanes in the fact that strongest pressure of the storm is inside, where has hurricane is outside • Tornadoes are convergent meaning they come together in a funnel.

Tornadoes continued…
• Tornadoes happen in tornado alley usually in the middle east, where warm tropical air near the surface is met with cool air at top • Green brown in color • Sounds like a train when the tornado occurs. • Following you will see a map of Tornadoes

Blizzards
• A major snowstorm • Characterized by the following:
– High wind speed – Duration of 4 hrs or more – 20 + cm of snow – Blowing snow – Low Visibility

Hurricanes
• Usually have the following:
– 2 strong parts with an eye in the center – Usually only occur in the Atlantic, and Caribbean – Are arranged along a mesoscale event – Usually can be from small to very heavy. – On the following slide, you will see a map of Hurricanes showing various strengths

9

Cyclones
• These normally have the following:
– In the pacific area, they do not occur in the Caribbean or Atlantic – They are usually counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and the storms up in Northern Hemisphere are clockwise.

10

Monsoons
• Usually you will find:
– In Asian and Eastern parts of Africa – Usually the climate is a very long period of dry weather found by a short period of VERY wet weather. – People can be killed during monsoons.

12

Earthquakes
• Earthquakes are:
– Shaking and trembling – Caused along the fault lines – Two types, can be a subduction, or one that glides – A richter scale is used to determine magnitude from 0.0 – 9.

Forest Fires
• Forest Fires can be:
– Made by humans being very inattentive to the situation around them – Can be made naturally from nature or pests like the “pine beetle” – Can be made by weather i.e.: wind and lightning – Last year BC had it worst ever made fire season both from all the reasons above!

14

Floods
• Floods can be caused by:
– Weather storms – Backed up sewage or storm drains from leaves and other products – Negligence of humans – On next page you will see a map of floods

16

Snow Squalls
• Snow Squalls are:
– Brief but powerful snowstorms that can occur from the lakes in the northern midwest and the central Canada around the great lakes – Can follow same qualities as blizzards.

17

Extreme Cold
• Usually is
– When there is serious wind chills or when there is serious cold temperatures outside. – You should wear the clothing outlined in the next column.

18

Extreme Heat
• Extreme Heat:
– When the temperatures get unseasonably hot and it can occur i.e. summer in Chicago – When there is very strong UV rays – Chart to follow on next page…

Weather Bombs
• These can be similar what happened to Eastern Canada in the Maritimes this year where 80+ cm of snow occurs within a very short period of time.

21

Windchill
PDF Created with deskPDF PDF Writer - Trial :: http://www.docudesk.com

• This is when your skins can get frost bite if you stay out in the cold too long • This is the temperature of what it feels like against the skin. • On next page, you will see a diagram

23

Humidex
• This is when the temperatures can get too hot to give you heat exhaustion or heat stroke and should be prepared for!

Avalanches
• These basically occur when there is warmer temperatures at the top of a hill followed by cooler temperatures down lower followed by unstable snow packs.

25

Natural Disasters caused by Humans
• Oil Spills • Land Slides from Logging • Chemical Spills • Contamination of the drinking water • Global Warming • • • • • Fires Building Collapses Clear Cutting Deforestations And much more

26

Oil Spills
• Happens when:
– Ships or other transportation or any vehicle is not inspected properly for possible leakages. – When people put used oil down the storm drains and into the lakes and rivers

27

Landslides from Various Actitivites
• Logging and other activities like this can uproot the land to cause a landslide • Also when there is manmade dams, aquifers etc. that are also put on mountains with deep digging.

28

Chemical Spills
• Industrial chemicals in factories, cargo, and other transportation fleet could leak toxic chemicals into the waters. • On dry land, spills can occur in the science labs and other related labs.

29

Contamination of Drinking Water
• Contamination of Water can occur:
– Chemicals or oil spills soaking into aquifers or ocean – Too many minerals in the water or sources of drinking – Acid Rain – Human or animal waste

30

Global Warming
• Pollution is the major cause of global warming, and we the population, can curve the pollution, and control the amount that gets into our waterways, into our skies, and into our space in general.

32

Building Collapses
• Each year this type of problem affects many people in the world. • Some areas don’t have proper building codes, and other regulations to keep their buildings around them safe.

Clear Cutting
• This is occurring in a lot more areas. This is also raising the risk of global warming, because the CO2 is getting higher.
