BA (HONS) PRINT TEXTILES + SURFACE PATTERN DESIGN WE WILL ENCOURAGE YOU TO SEE YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER AND TO DEVELOP

AN ENQUIRING AND VERSATILE ATTITUDE TO DESIGNING.


You will be helped to explore, develop and express innovative concepts, and to find your own approaches to the wide range of specialisations within the course. The majority of our graduates are employed in design teams or studios in a wide range of industries; others establish their own practices as designer/makers. Whatever you choose, the world of design is rich, exciting and fluid. It is forward-thinking, yet rooted in history interior design - and will always embrace innovation, new ideas and vision. First year modules include: Design for Print Design for Digital Output Design for Paper Design for Context Context of Practice 1 Personal and Professional Practice 1. Work placements This is a key aspect of the course from the second year onwards, and you will be encouraged to do periods of work placement to suit your individual requirements. Students have recently been as far afield as Calcutta, the USA, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Milan, although the majority go to London or other UK locations. In 2011, our students worked in the design studios of Liberty, Alexander McQueen, Topshop, Miss Selfridge, River Island, Duchamp, Amanda Wakeley, Rob Ryan, Paul Smith, Alison Willoughby, Karen Nicol, Habitat, Oasis, Timorous Beasties, DKNY, Diane von Furstenberg and numerous others. Study visits Every year, first-year students have a week-long study trip to Amsterdam while second-year students have a choice of two visits to Paris. A further visit to New York is scheduled every three years, open to students across all of the years. Exhibition opportunities In February and September each year, the course shows and sells student designs at Indigo fashion fabric trade fair in Paris. Those students specialising in interiors may show their work on our stand at MoODtrade fair in Brussels. We also show student work at the Leeds International Book Fair and the Glasgow International Artists Book Fair. The New Designers Exhibition in London is an opportunity for our graduating students to present themselves and their work to a professional audience and to meet potential employers. Resources We have professionally equipped textile-print workshops staffed by specialist technicians. These workshops offer equipment for dyeing, screen-printing, heattransfer printing, digital printing and lasercutting. The well-equipped CAD suites have both PCs and Macs. All students have access to the internet and use software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (no prior knowledge of these is necessary). European links As well as visiting and exhibiting at major European trade fairs and placing our students in design studios in European cities, the course participates in the Colleges Erasmus student exchange scheme (see page 75 for more information). Progression & career opportunities We design for a global industry and our graduates are employed in design studios throughout the world in fashion and Interior textiles; card and gift wrap; wall coverings; media and publications; fashion marketing; styling; buying; fashion accessories; costume design; and interior design. Each year, several students continue their studies at masters or PGCE level. Links with industry Each year we collaborate with Tigerprint and Pattern Fashion Fabric Studio, as well as other manufacturers and design studios whenever appropriate opportunities arise. In the final year we encourage you to work with companies, and this has led to exciting successes for our students in Europe and the USA.

We welcome a wide range of qualifications and accept students with the best potential to succeedirrespective of their background. Further Information Entry Requirements

Higher Education In all instances, you will need to have a portfolio of relevant practical work which demonstrates your ability and enthusiasm for the course youre applying for, as well as achieving level 3 qualification/s in an art and design related subject (see below). You also need to have passed GCSE English Language or English Literature at grade C or above, or Functional Skills in English or Key Skills Communications at Level 2. For mature students, an Access to Higher Education qualification in art and design will also be acceptable to demonstrate English language ability. For mature students who are unable to provide formal evidence of an appropriate standard of English, the College may request completion of its own English proficiency test. If you are studying an accredited Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Youll need 240 UCAS tariff points** from your foundation diploma and your AS and A2 results. You may add together AS/A2 and foundation diploma tariff points in arriving at 240 points. You will also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above).

If you are studying for an Extended Diploma Youll need 240 UCAS tariff points** from an extended diploma in a relevant subject or a Creative and Media Diploma (Level 3). You will also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above). If you are studying for your AS and A2s Youll need 240 tariff points** from your AS and A2 studies. Two of your qualifications must be at A2 level, one of which should be in an art and design or related subject. Youll also need a GCSE grade A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above). If you are a mature student studying for a recognised Access to Higher Education course Youll need a recognised Access to Higher Education course specialising in art and design. If you are studying for a BTEC National Certificate Youll need 240 UCAS tariff points** from a BTEC National Certificate in a relevant subject. You will also need a GCSE grade

A*-C in English Language, English Literature or equivalent (see above). Any other qualification? We accept a number of other qualifications. Further Education Foundation Diploma in Art & Design You should normally be at least 18 years old with one A level plus three GCSE passes at grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications. You should also be able to present a portfolio of work which demonstrates your interests and ability in art and design. Extended Diploma in Art & Design You should be at least 16 years old, have four GCSE passes at grade C or above, or an Intermediate GNVQ or Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design at a merit or above, and be able to present a portfolio of work which shows your interest and ability in art design and/or technology.

Level Two Diploma in Art & Design You should normally be at least 16 years old with a minimum of three GCSE passes at Grade D, and be able to present a portfolio of work which shows your interest and ability in art, design and/or technology. General Art & Design and Access to Higher Education We require an IELTS Level 5 or equivalent English Language qualification. You may also wish to show us examples of work which demonstrate your creative side or skills such as drawings, paintings, models, garments or photographs. Students with sufficient experience in art and design may progress directly to the second year (Access to Higher Education) of the programme. Mature students If youre older than the typical college entrant and dont have traditional qualifications, we will consider your relevant experience as well as your educational background. Your application form should provide as much information as possible for consideration by admissions staff and, if we consider it tobe relevant, well explore it further with you at interview.
