Guiding questions that will provide the framework for the lesson. (Respond to each question.)
Who will you be teaching? (Identify student grade level as well as academic functioning level and specific needs of individual students) Five learning support students in grades 6 through 8 enrolled in a remedial reading class who struggle with fluency and comprehension Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be? The learning support teacher will be the sole facilitator.

What is the long range goal(s) that is tied to this lesson? The goal is for the students to demonstrate comprehension of vocabulary words from the chapters read aloud in the novel unit.

What is the specific learning objective(s) for this lesson? Using a computer with Microsoft PowerPoint, their novel, and notes, the students will demonstrate comprehension of five vocabulary words by creating slides that provide the term, correct definition, and appropriate picture with 100% accuracy on each of the 5 slides. What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson? Basic computer skills Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint

When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency lesson, learning maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?) Several chapters of the novel will have been read aloud in class and vocabulary will be introduced prior to this lesson being taught. This is a learning maintenance lesson.

When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?) Students will have multiple days of class time to complete this lesson, depending on the needs of the students and computer issues that may arise. Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (computer lab, classroom, science lab) AND what materials will be needed? This lesson will be presented in the regular reading classroom. Students will have access to their novels, notes, and computers here.

Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students? This lesson will assess comprehension of key vocabulary from the chapters read in the novel. These learning support students often struggle with specialized vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. This activity will reinforce these concepts.

How does this lesson relate to the PA Academic Standards? This lesson is aligned to PA Common Core Standard CC.1.3.8.J.

How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons? This lesson will act as a review of key vocabulary from previous lessons/chapters. The students will continue to see many of these vocabulary words in future lessons/chapters.

How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment) The students will have met the lesson objective if they are able to create a PowerPoint Presentation for five vocabulary words that includes the term, correct definition, and an appropriate picture on each of the five slides. How should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (lecture, whole group activities, small group activities, cooperative learning groups) This lesson will first be presented as a whole group activity where the teacher will review the rubric and provide a sample PowerPoint presentation to further explain what is expected. After selecting their vocabulary words, students will then work independently on the computers to create their presentations as the teacher monitors the room and assists the students, as needed.
