Indeed it is a supplication that many of us are in dire need of as we embark in seeking knowledge of our religion. and then teach it to others.Introduction The following is a word by word study chart over the authentic narration narrated by Anas that the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “O Allah! benefit me with what you have taught me. and to increase me in knowledge and sustenance. There is another addition to this supplication as reported by at-Tirmidhee so whoever wants to reference it in Buloogh may do so. I found it in al-’Alaamah. Your brother in Islaam. I ask that my Muslim brothers & sisters make Dua’a for me and ask Allah to forgive me. the weak one. I hope that every Muslim man and woman will memorize it. al-Muhaddith.” It was related by an-Nisaa’ee and al-Haakim. teach me what will benefit me and provide me with knowledge that will benefit me.
ﻭ ﻨﻔﻳ ﺎﻨﻲ ﻣﻋﻠﻤﺎ ﻋﻠﻤﺘﹺﻲ. ﻭﻨﻲ ﹺﺑﻤﻧﻔﻌﺍﹶﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﺍ ﱢ ﹺﻲ ﹶﻌﹺﻲ ﺯ ﹾﻨﻲ ﻨﻲ ﱠ ﻢ ﹶ ﹺﻲ ﱠ ﺭﺯ ﻬ ﹾ ﹶﻌﹺﻲ ﻨﻲ ﻨﻔﻳ ﻋﻠﻤًﺎ O All h! b Allah! benefit me with what you h fit ith h t have t taught me. t h me what will b ht teach h t ill benefit me and provide fit d id me with knowledge that will benefit me.The Text ﻗﹺﻲ ﺍﺭﻨﻲ. ﻋﻠﻤﻨﹺﻲ ْ ﱢﻋ ﻠ Teach me ﻭ And ﻋﻠﻤﺘﻨﹺﻲ ْ ﱠﻋ ﻠ You taught me ﹺﻤﺎ ﺎ ﺑ With what اﻧْﻧﻔﻌﻨﹺﻲ ْ ِ ﻔﹶ Benefit me ﺍﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﺍﹶﻟ ﱠ ﻠ O Allah! ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨﹺﻲ ْﹶ That will benefit me ﺎﻋﻠﻤ ﹾ Knowledge ﺍﺭﺯﻗﻨﹺﻲ ﹾ ْ Provide me ﻭ And ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨﹺﻲ ْﹶ Will benefit me ﺎﻣ What .
“Yaa Allah!” 1 .Phrase One ﻨﹺﻲﺎ ﻋﻠﻤﺘ ﻨﹺﻲ ﺑﻧﻔﻌﺍﺍﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﺍ ﺘﻨ ﱠﻔﹶ ﻨ ﹺﻤﺎ ﻋ ﻧ ﹶﻟﱠ ﻠ ﻠ ﺍﹶﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﱠ “O Allah” is a supplication to Allah. it consists of two words: O Allah Allah ﺍﹶﻟﻠﻪ ﱠ “Allah” the Divine Name of the Creator of the heavens and the earth which is a noun and: ﻡ The Meem here conveys the same meaning as Yaa like if you said.
ﻧﹺﻲ This is a possessive pronoun that always connects to the end of a verb whether the verb is past tense.ْﻧﻔﹶﻌﻨﹺﻲﺍ ْ “Benefit me…” This is a combination of two words: ﺍْﻧﻔﻊ ْﹶ “Benefit” is a verb and is considered a singular command that is said to a Male. you are requesting Allah to benefit you. present tense or a command It means “Me”. Me Benefit Me meaning: ﹶ ﹺﻲ ْﻧﻔﻌْﻨﻲﺍ “Benefit Me” 2 . When you add both the verb “Benefit” with the possessive pronoun “Me” you get the command.
When you add both the verb “You taught” with the possessive pronoun “Me” you get the meaning: ﱠ ْ ﹺﻲ ﻨﻲﻋﻠﻤﺘ “You taught me” 3 . “You taught” This is a past tense verb that is said to a Male. The action here indicates that Allah taught knowledge. For translation purposes I chose to use “what” instead of “that which/the one who” but one should not confuse this Maa as being Maa al-Istifhaam (The Interrogative Maa of Question) as this Maa is Maa al-Mawsoolah. the Baa here is a preposition (a Harf) and it conveys the meaning of “with” or “in”. It is connected to the word Maa which conveys the meaning of a noun meaning: “That which” or “The one who”. “Me” and is considered a noun tense Me noun.ﺎﺑﹺﻤ “With what” is a combination of two words. It means. ﻋﻠﻤﺖ ْ ﱠ ﻠ ﻧﹺﻲ We covered the meaning of this verb previously but to reiterate this is a possessive pronoun that always connects to the end of a verb regardless of the tense.
” 4 .Now let us combine the sentence: ﺎ ﻋﻠﻤﺘﹺﻲﻨﻲ ﹺﺑﻤﻧﻔﻌ ﺍ ﺍﹶﻟﻠ ﻨﻲ ﱠ ﱠﻬﻢ ﹶ ﹺﻲ ﻬﻢ “O Allah. benefit me with that which you taught me.
you are requesting Allah to teach you. ﻋﻠﻤﻨﹺﻲ ْ ﱢ “Teach me” this is a combination of two words: ْﻋﻠﻢ ﱢ “Teach” is a verb and is considered a singular command that is said to a Male. It is considered a Harf (Particle).Phrase Two ﱢ ﹺﻲ ﹶﻌﹺﻲ ﻨﻲ ﻨﻔﺎ ﻳﻨﻲ ﻣﻋﻠﻤﻭ ﻭ “And” is a conjunction that connects this phrase and the next. 5 .
The measure of this type of verb is from: It has an intensive meaning and from it we get words like: Tafseer (Explanation). if y recall it means “Me”. Takbeer (to say Allahu Akbar) etc. ﻓﻌﻞ ﻞﹶﻓﹶ ﻔﻌ ﹸ ﻞ ﻳ ﹶ ﻞ ﻓ ﻌ ﹾﹶ ْﻞ ﹾ ﻔﻌﻴ ﹲﺗ ﻋﻠﻤﺖ ﱠ ْﺖﻋ ﻠ Is the past tense form of this verb. Tahleel (to say Laa Ilaha Illa Allah). ﻧﹺﻲ We covered the meaning of this verb p g previously. Now when y add both words together y y you you g you get: ﻋﻠﻤﻨﹺﻲ ﱢ ْﹺ “Teach me” 6 . Tasbeeh (to say Subhaana Allah). Tahmeed (to say al-Hamdulillah). We covered the meaning above.
This is the same verb we dealt with before when we used its verbal command i th first phrase: b d lt ith b f h d it b l d in the fi t h ْﺍﻧْﻔﻊ ْﹶ “Benefit” 7 .ﺎﻣ We covered the meaning of this noun previously. ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨﹺﻲ ْﹶ “Benefits me” this is also two words combined. however the word: ﻳﻨﻔﻊ ْﻔﹶ “He benefits” is a present tense verb that is used for a Male. here the verb is being preformed by the noun Maa.
The resemblance is the 3 root letters Noon.) 8 . This verb is from the verb type: ﻞﻌ ﻞﹶﻓﹶ ﻔﻌ ﹸﻳ ﻞ ﹾ ﺇﹺﻓﹾﻌﻞﹾ ﹲ ﻓﻌﻞ ﻓﹶﻌْﻞ ﹺﻲ ﻧﻲ We covered the meaning of this verb previously. inshaAllah. Faa and ‘Ayn. Let us now add the entire phrase together: وﻋﻠﻤ ِﻲ َﺎ ﻳﻨﻔﻌ ِﻲ ﻔﻨ َ َﱢ ْﻨ ﻣﺎ َﻨْ َ ُﻨ ﻋﻠ ﻨ “And teach me that which will And benefit me” me 9 .
j f ﺍﺭﺯﻗﻨﹺﻲ ﹾ ْ “Provide for me” is a combination of two words: ﺍﺭﺯﻕ ْ ْ “Provide” with a Dhammah on the Alif is a verb and is considered a singular command that is said to a Male. you are requesting Allah to provide for you. 10 . It is considered a Harf (Particle).Phrase Three ﻨﹺﻲﻔﹶﻨ ﻗﹾﻨﹺﻲ ﻋﻠﹾ ًﺎ ﺍ ﻠﻤﺎ ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨ ﻭﺍﺭﺯﻗﻨ ﺯ ﻭ “And” is a conjunction that connects this next phrase with the last.
This verb is from the verb type: ﻓﻌﻞ ﻞﹶﻓﹶ ﻔﻌﻞﻳ ﹸﹾ ﻞ ﺃﺃﻓ ﻌ ﹾﹸﹾ ﹺﻲ ﻧﻲ We covered the meaning of this noun previously. 11 . ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨﹺﻲ ْﹶ “Benefits me” We covered the meaning of this verb/noun combination previously. When we combine both words we get: ﻗﹾﻨﹺﻲ ْﺍﺭ ﺍﺭﺯﻗﻨ ﺯ “Provide for me” ﺎﻠﹾﻤﻋ “Knowledge” is a noun.
May Allah grant Tawfeeq to that which He loves and is pleased with.Now let us combine the last phrase: ﻨﻲ ﻨﻔﻗﹾﻨﻲ ﻋﻠﻤًﺎ ﻳ ﺍﺭﻭ ﹾ ﹶﻌﹺﻲ ﺯ ﹺﻲ ﺭﺯ “And “A d provide me knowledge id k l d that will benefit me” me Allah willing you will now have a basic understanding of this Dua’aa whenever you recite it. 12 .
ﻠﻤﺎ ﻔﹶﹺﻨ ﻠ ﻢ ﻩ ﺍﻟﻨﺴﺎﺋﻲ ﳊﹶﺎﻛﻢ ﺭﻭﺍ ﺍﻟﺴﺎﺋﻲ ﻭ ﺍﺍﳊﺎﻛ ﺭﻭﺍﻩ ﻨ 31 .ﻭ ﻋﻦ ﺃﻧﺲﹴ ﻗﹶﺎﻝ ﻛﹶﺎﻥ ﺭ ﻮ ﹸ ﺍﷲ ﻳ ﹸﻮ ﹸ ﻘ ﻝ ﹶ ﹶ ﺳ ﻝ ﱠ ﻢ ﺍﻧﻔﻌﻨﻲ ﹺﺑﻤﺎ ﻋﻠﻤﻨﻲ ﻭ ﺍﻟﻠﻬ ﹶ ﹺﻲ ﱠ ﺘﹺﻲ ﻋﻠﻤﻨﹺﻲ ﻣﺎ ﻳﻨﻔﹶ ﻨﹺﻲ ﻭ ﺍﺭ ﻗﹾﻨﹺﻲ ﻋﱢﻤﻨ ﻣﺎ ﻳﻨﻔﻌﻨ ﺍﺭﺯﻗﻨ ﺯ ﻌ ﻠ ﻋ ﹾ ًﺎ ﻳﻨﻔﻌﹺﻲ.
