JU E 3, 2012 . MOST HOLY TRI ITY
In the armed forces commissioned officers derives their authority directly from a sovereign power. They have command authority because of the commission that they have received. By virtue of their commission they exercise both responsibility for and control of those under their command. "Commission" can refer both to the granting of duties as well as the actual execution of those duties (although we often only think of the latter in a negative way as in the "commission" of a crime). The Gospel for this weekend comes from the very end of St. Matthew's Gospel. It is often described as the "Great Commission." After his resurrection, Jesus gathers his disciples on a mountain in Galilee. He gives them a commission. They are to go out and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that he has commanded. That is the word that Jesus uses in this passage from Matthew: to teach what he has commanded. Like a commissioned officer in the armed forces, the commission of a follower of Jesus is derived from a sovereign power, except that in this case, it is the ultimate sovereign power-the Son of God. The Gospel command is not limited to eleven fishermen standing on a Galilean hillside. The Gospels remains in force today. The commission applies to us as well. And since this commission is given in the context of Matthew's Gospel, it is important to recall that part of what Jesus commanded was the care of our brothers and sisters. Matthew's Gospel contains the story that reminds us that the Son of Man is seen in the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the ill, and the imprisoned. And it is he who commands us to be attentive to them. A commissioned officer is ultimately responsible to the commander-in-chief. In our case, that means that we are ultimately responsible to Christ.
