June 2012

Dear Church Family and friends, Ecclesiastes is the Anglicized form of ekklesiastes, meaning an officer, or person in charge of a congregation or assembly, this is in turn, a conventional Greek rendering of the Hebrew title of the book, Qoheleth, literally, the one who convenes the assembly. Based upon internal evidences, the final form of the book would not have been written during the time of Solomon, but rather after the Babylonian exile. I spent a lot of time browsing Bible dictionaries and commentaries before writing this story, but felt led to share in a different fashion. I want to place it in an American setting like Floyds barbershop in Mayberry. Picture this, the group of the men of the community all gather together late on a Friday afternoon, and one elder statesman of the towns members who seldom speaks, but when doing so shares the most profound of thoughts asks the men of the town to please indulge him, while he shares his thoughts. He asks them to let him speak his peace, before entering into any discussion. He shares all the heartfelt, honest insights that he has gleaned from living life in this world. He challenges the assumed world of many a theologian and Bible teacher with the facts of life as he has observed it. There can be little doubt that the men there disagreed with his pessimism and cynical view of those persons who claim to have it all figured out. He argues that What makes sense to God usually seems senseless or to hold little meaning to humankind. When he comes to the end of his soliloquy, and the men are about to voice their objections, he arises from his chair and says to them. Gentlemen, I call them as I see them. God bless, and see you all at church on Sunday. Then he proceeds to walk out the door leaving the townsmen to contemplate and discuss what he has shared with them. That is the really neat thing about Ecclesiastes, and why it is rarely quoted in other books of the Bible. The author has an odd perspective as he lets us know that there is joy to be found in this life in the midst of what seems so often to be mundane and meaningless. These joys of life in the midst of the meaninglessness, are the true gifts of God to each of us. Simple joys are to be found in enjoying the fruit of our labors, in the company of friends, in the love of your spouse, and in living life to the fullest (beware the person who never celebrates or parties). Think about it! Pondering and enjoying life!

Special Thanks . . .
Thank you for your support, gift of love and prayers. The Delaware Valley Youth Ministry Coalition greatly appreciates your love offering of $45 towards purchasing Bibles. You helped us plant seeds to many people in the community during our Unity Day event. Love, DVYMC Dear Church Family, I just want to thank the church for the beautiful flowers sent to my sisters funeral. I dont normally check out the flowers, but when I first went in, I was walking to a seat and when I sat down -- right next to me were the church flowers. It was almost as if everyone was with me, and I felt blessed. Thanks! Also, I really appreciate all the cards and expressions of sympathy from the church family. Gerry
