Application of Data-level Security in Framework Manager


Definitions
ETL stands for Extract, Transform, and Load. ETL tools provide a means of loading data from various data sources and performing any calculations, formatting, etc. that may be needed to process data and get it ready for use. Framework Manager (FM) is the application that is used in Cognos to not only connect the Reporting Studios to the data but to allow business logic to be applied the data. FM is the application that creates packages in Cognos. LDAP Authentication is a network protocol for authenticating to various network resources. Modeler is a term used to refer to a person using framework manager to create and modify packages. Node is a grouping or value in a tree hierarchy. PeopleSoft Financials is an Oracle ERP application for managing Financial information. SMU also uses other PeopleSoft applications for Student Information, Human Resources, etc. The PeopleSoft suite is used by many universities. Query Subject is general term for an object in Cognos used to query data. Since the source can be a table, view, or stored procedure a general term is used to limit confusion. Security Query Subject is the set of data that ties user credentials to an aspect of the data e.g. Organization Code. SunGard Banner is an Enterprise Resource Planning Suite (ERP) that focuses on the needs of Higher Education. It is used at many universities across the nation including Texas Tech University and Sam Houston State University. Target Query Subject is the set of data that we want to add security to. We want users to only see their data when querying this query subject. Trees are the hierarchical structures for organizing various details in PeopleSoft.
