Short CV Gerhard Budin Gerhard Budin holds a PhD in linguistics and Masters degree in translation studies.

He has also studied economics and philosophy. Gerhard Budin is full professor for terminology studies and translation technologies at the Centre of Translation Studies (CTS) at the University of Vienna (since 1st of January, 2005). He is director of the Institute for Corpus Linguistics and Text Technology (ICLTT) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 1st of April, 2010) and a member (kM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is Chair holder of the UNESCO Chair for Multilingual, Transcultural Communication in the Digital Age. From 2004 to 2006 and since 2008 he has been the deputy director/vice-dean (Stellvertretender Zentrumsleiter) of the CTS, between 2006 and 2008 he was the director/dean (Zentrumsleiter) of this unit, which is one of the 18 scientific units of the University of Vienna (15 Faculties and 3 Centres). The CTS has about 2800 students and about 150 staff members including external teachers.

Research interests and research activities: His research interests are language technologies, corpus linguistics, and knowledge engineering, E-Learning technologies and collaborative work systems, distributed digital research environments, terminology studies, ontology engineering, cognitive systems, crosscultural knowledge communication and knowledge organization, philosophy of science, and information science. His relevant research priority at the CTS is called Translation Cognition Technologies that is also part of the trans-disciplinary Research Platform Cognitive Science at the University of Vienna. For the last 25 years Gerhard Budin has been active in national, European, and international research projects in the areas mentioned above (see separate list for projects since 2005).

Other activities Gerhard Budin is vice-president of the International Institute for Terminology Research and Chair of a technical sub-committee in the International Standards Organization (ISO) focusing on terminology and language resources (ISO/TC 37/SC 2 2001-2009, SC 1 2009-present), managing pre-normative research. He is member of scientific advisory boards at various research organisations and of editorial boards of several scientific journals. For many years he has been active as evaluator of research proposals as well as of ongoing research projects for the European Commission (DG INFSO) in the fields of language engineering, multimedia semantics, ontology engineering, as well as for DFG, NSF, and other comparable national research funding agencies (Canada, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, France, Hong Kong, etc.).

Teaching activities Gerhard Budin has been supervising Master theses (about 400) and doctoral dissertations (15 completed, 15 ongoing) since January 1997 (Habilitation). The topics of teaching include terminology studies, terminology management, corpus linguistics, multilingualism, specialized communication, language technologies, machine translation, localisation, technical writing, information science, philosophy of science, etc.
