Dear18thDistrictResident: Summerarrivesthisweekandwithittheendoftheschoolyear, timeforfamilyvacations,andabreakfromlegislativeactivityfortheOhio Houseafterabusy18monthsthathavemarkedwhatsomehavecalled themostactiveGeneralAssemblyinageneration. Iamhonoredtobea memberoftheHouseatthistimeoftransformationalchangeforOhioand happytoprovideyouwithanothermonthlyupdatefeaturingsome encouragingsignsthatwearebeginningtomovetheBuckeyeStateinthe rightdirection. Considerthesefacts: SinceJanuary2011,Ohioanshavecreated 94,300 jobs,making theBuckeyeState4thamongallstatesinthenation and1st in the Midwest forjobcreation. OhiosunemploymentratewentdowninMayto7.3percent,as theU.S.unemploymentratewentupto8.2percent. Sincethe enactmentofHouseBill153(thestateoperatingbudget),Ohios unemploymentratehasimprovednearlytwiceasfastasthe nationalrate. ThemostrecentnumbersfromtheU.S.BureauofLaborStatistics indicatetheU.S.created69,000jobsinMay. Ofthose,Ohio created19,600jobs,meaningourstatealonewasresponsiblefor 28.4 percent of all jobs created nationallylastmonth the#2 state in the nation for job creation. OnJune3,Iparticipatedinthegrandopeninganddedicationof thenewNorthRoyaltonFamilyYMCA,awonderfulexampleofpublic privatepartnershipbetweentheCityofNorthRoyalton,Parma CommunityGeneralHospital,andtheYMCAofGreaterCleveland. Iwas pleasedtopresentacommendationonbehalfoftheOhioHouseof RepresentativestoExecutiveDirectorTimPinchekandoffermybest wishesforthesuccessofthisnewhealthandwellnessfacilityinour community. OnJune6,Iattendedtheannualretirementbreakfastfor employeesoftheOlmstedFallsCitySchoolDistrict. Wegatheredat OlmstedFallsMiddleSchooltoexpressourappreciationtotheteachers, administrators,andstaff,whotogetherrepresentedsome338Bulldog yearsofservicetothedistrict. Itooktheopportunitytoupdateattendees onmyworkasvicechairmanoftheHouseEducationCommitteeand ongoingeffortstopartnerwithourdistrictssuperintendentsand educatorsasweengageinimportantreformstocontinuestrengthening publiceducationintheStateofOhio. OnJune15,wemarkedthefirstElderAbuseAwarenessDayin theStateofOhiowithanluncheonattheDonauschwabenGerman AmericanCulturalCenterinOlmstedFalls. IwaspleasedtohaveOhio AttorneyGeneralMikeDeWinevisitourdistrictforthiscommemoration, aswellastheannouncementofadditionalseniorcitizenprotection legislationIhavebeendevelopinginpartnershipwithMr.DeWines office. TheOhioElderJusticeAct,whichIwillsoonintroduceinthe House,willupdatecurrentlawtoimprovetheresponsetoelderabuse victimsbystrengtheningAdultProtectiveServicesinOhio. Despitethesestatistics,lessthanfivepercentof theNationalCancerInstitutesbudgetisdevotedtopediatriccancer research. TheChildrensOncologyGroup(COG),aninternational consortiumcomprisedofpediatriconcologistsatvariousinstitutions aroundtheworld,providestreatmentusedtotreatandtocurechildhood cancers.
