General Physics Final Exam Global Warming paper
You are to write a paper concerning Global warming. You may take any stance you wish regarding the Global warming issue, but you must be able to back up your claims with scientific data and sources. All thesis statements will be approved by Mrs. Bauer before you begin your paper. You must be able to explain the data presented and relate it to your topic. An abstract is a short summary of your completed research. If done well, it makes the reader want to learn more about your research. These are the basic components of an abstract in any discipline: 1) Motivation/problem statement: Why do we care about the problem? What practical, scientific, theoretical or artistic gap is your research filling? 2) Methods/procedure/approach: What did you actually do to get your results? (e.g. analyzed 3 novels, completed a series of 5 oil paintings, interviewed 17 students) 3) Results/findings/product: As a result of completing the above procedure, what did you learn/invent/create? 4) Conclusion/implications: What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the problem/gap identified in step 1? However, it's important to note that the weight accorded to the different components can vary by discipline. For models, try to find abstracts of research that is similar to your research.
Scientific facts/ supporting data: You need no less than four scientific facts/ supporting data to support your thesis statement. You must present the data as well as give credit to the researchers who gathered and reduced the data. (site your sources.) You must also explain what your data tells us and how it is relevant to your topic. Tables of data and especially charts and graphs are encouraged in this section. Remember to always label your axis and give credit to the researchers who created the original graph. You also must always explain the relevance of any graph, chart, or miscellaneous data that you present. Do not simply place a chart on your paper and not explain the relevance of it. Scientific data requirement # 1: One of the scientific points must be related to Pressure and/or buoyancy. (Remember that this is a final exam in physics and your topics will have to encompass what you have learned in this class this semester.) You may choose to talk about the ocean currents and how pressure changes in the ocean help keep these currents running the way they do. You might choose to talk about the melting polar ice caps and how the ocean levels will be affected if part of Antarctica melted where the ocean levels will not change if part of the artic would melt. You could also use some arguments on density within this second scientific requirement. As always, remember you MUST back up all claims with published research and always site your sources with in your paper. Scientific data requirement # 2, 3, and 4: Your choice. This is where the fun and creativity come in. You need at least two more scientific facts or supporting data to back up your thesis. These can be social science data, chemical, or biological data. You do not have to stick to the realm of physics here. You must always site your sources and present clear connections between your data and the theme of your paper.
Conclusion: In this section you paraphrase what you stated in the paper previously, driving home the most important points to defend your thesis statement. Also in the conclusion section, you must include a personal statement. The statement can answer some of the following questions. Why did you choose your particular thesis statement? What have you learned by doing the research for this paper? Has your view on Global warming or related issues changed or has this process strengthened it? Please elaborate and explain any responses. You papers are due will with all the materials needed on the due date listed. IF A PAPER IS NOT IN MY HANDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS PERIOD ON THE DUE DATE IT IS CONSIDERED LATE, EVEN IF THE STUDENT IS ABSENT. I will mark the paper down 10 points per school day, not per class period, late. This means that if your paper is due Monday and you hand it in on Wednesday, you will be marked down 20 points. All papers must be printed and stapled and ready to hand in when class begins on the due date. NO EXCEPTIONS! This paper is in lieu of a traditional final exam, please take this seriously. Note on plagiarism: All quoted material must be in quotes and immediately cited. All paraphrased material must be cited immediately as well.
