THE FIRST TEN YEARS
The Decision to be a Community On Sunday, August 21, 1977, approximat ers and sisters gathered in Christ the King Chapel to make a covenant with God a: another to be a Christian Community in the Ohio Valley. This was the initial step tak _ uild a community through the training and formation of The Word of God community . - Arbor, Michigan. First Underway Commitment Made The first formal reception of brothers and sisters an underway commitment took place on Palm Sunday, 1978. Initial Formation From August 1977 to August 1979, Bruce Yocum regularly visited :-eubenville, most often with teams of brothers and sisters from The Word of God to - elop and establish the community more firmly. During this two year period, the commuwent through a series of courses on basic Christian living and Christian Community. This y of wisdom from The Word of God had a significant impact on the community and the idual lives of its members. The Cirners Arrive A more intensive training began for the community on August 10, 979, when a group of brothers and sisters from The Word of God were sent to live in Steuville in order to more closely oversee the growth of the community and the development _ s: • s leadership. The members of that first household included Randy and Therese Cirner := d their 3 children. Mary Ann Jahr (now Leland), Pat Pinard (now Miller), Mary Maxey (now au), and Tim Heaney. First Covenant Commitment Made On Palm Sunday, March 30, 1980, during a special ceremony at the Community Gathering, the first group of brothers and sisters (37) made _ nal commitment to live as members of Servants of God's Love according to the cove- t we had established. This was a milestone in the life of the community as it provided _ urn foundation on which the Lord could build a mature community. Catholic Fellowship is Established On December 1, 1980 Bishop Albert Otten weller :" cially designated Servants of God's Love as a Catholic Fellowship in his diocese with ecclesial rights and responsibilities. This authorized the community to extend the care of s members to include all their sacramental needs as Catholics under the jurisdiction of the _ hop. With the action, the community inaugurated its weekly Fellowship Liturgies, at first _ ebrated on Saturday night to open the Lord's Day, and later moved to Sunday morning. Elders Are Raised Up At the Community Gathering on January 17, 1982,.Fr. Mike 3canlan and Tom Kneier were confirmed and prayed over as the first two permanent coortors of the Servants of God's Love community. These brothers had served as tempo=~ coordinators since the inception of the community and had been judged ready to lead community over the long term.
3

Another Phase of Formation is Completed A significant phase of training for the community was ended when Randy and Therese Cirner returned to The Word of God on June 12, 1982, after almost 3 years of service to the community. The reception held in their honor the week prior to their departure was a testimony to the significant way that God had used them in the life of the community. Five Year Anniversary As of August 21, 1982 Servants of God's Love was made up of 134 adults (48 married couples, 20 single women, and 18 single men) and 79 children under 18 years of age. Of these, 67, or exactly half of the community had made a public commitment. The Sword of the Spirit is Established On November 19, 1982, the body of coordinators - Fr. Mike, Tom Kneier, and Keith Fournier - traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to witness the inauguration of The Sword of the Spirit and to speak for the community's commitment to this new international, ecumenical, missionary body. Name Change As a reflection of this new identity and mission, the leaders proposed to change the community's name to Servants of Christ the King. This was ratified by the members at the Community Gathering on December 19, 1982, during which they reaffirmed their underway and public commitments, now to the covenant statement of The Sword of the Spirit. A New Coordinator In August of 1983, Paco Gavrilides began serving as the missionary head coordinator of the community, and in the subsequent years has overseen its development into a fully formed branch of The Sword of the Spirit. Districts Are Formed As numbers grew, it became desirable to divide into smaller units called districts. The first two districts were formed in February 1984, and the first district gatherings were held two months later on April 29. The OVCA is Born The community's ecumenical outreach began with a monthly men's breakfast at the Millsop Center in Weirton, WV, in early 1980. When its success produced more programs and regular events, all the activities were organized under the umbrealla title of the Ohio Valley Christian Association in August of 1984. Keith Fournier was its first director. Ten year Anniversary After ten years as a Christian Community, Servants of Christ the King is now about 640 strong: some 370 adults and 270 children - a people in the service of God.

we enter into this covenant with Him as a people, we understand that this does not deny the relationship we may have with a church body. Nor does it necessarily ITEanfor everyone a lifetiITE corrnitrrent to being part of The SWordof the Spirit. We can foresee that changing circumstances in a person's life may make active involveITEnt in The SWord of the Spirit no longer possible, although such a change wou.Ld be undertaken only with serious prayer and counsel.

It is with deep joy and gratitude, realizing the overwhelming goodness of Q:x:l in giving us this opportunity, that we enter into the covenant the Lord is making with us and express our acceptance of it publicly as individuals and as a people.

the covenant
In order to respond to what Q:x:l is doing among us, in order to be that people He is calling us to be, we desire to give our whole lives to Him, to follow His Son, Jesus, and to live rrore and rrore in the Holy Spirit. We desire to love and serve Him in lives of daily prayer and service; to praise and worShip Him always; to ever seek His face; to believe what He speaks to us and to be obedient to the truth of His Word and the guidance of His Spirit; to offer hospitality to those whomHe sends us; to widen our hearts to receive those He adds to our number; and to carry out the mission throughout the worLd that He is entrusting to us. !>Jx,veall, we desire to be a people who always grow, by His great rrercy , in the fervor of that first love He has given us, He who is our .all. We desire to consecrate our lives to Him not simply as individuals but as rrernbers of a people, rrernbers of The SWordof the Spirit. We know that in order for us to be truly a people of one mind and heart in our response to the Lord, we must serve and care for our brothers and sisters in The SWordof the Spirit, and we must understand and pccept those things which make our life as one body possible. We know that we must ITEet together with the carmunity when the ccmnunity rreet.s , Wemust respect and support the pattern and order of our life together. Wemust support the life of the carmunity with our material and financial resources. All this is simply to take responsibility for those the Lord has given us; to be a new family, rrernbers of the same body, brothers and sisters working together in the mission He is entrusting to us as a people. Wedesire to put our lives He may lead. into His hands completely, and follow Him as a people wherever

Servants of Christ The I(ing
Celebrating 12 Years of Growth
Twelve years ago on Sunday, August 21, 1977, approximately 40 brothers and sisters gathered in Christ the King Chapel to make covenant with God and one another to be a Christian community in the Ohio Valley. Because of God's faithfulness and the love and formation of brothers and sisters from The Word of God community in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Servants of Christ the King has grown from a handful of committed men and women to 378 adults and 350 children - a total of 728 family members (as of 4/89). As we have grown in number, so have we grown in diversity. We have the privilege of experiencing what St. Paul spoke of when he said, "The body is one and has many members, but all the members, many though they are, are one body; and so it is with Christ" (1 Cor. 12:12). Currently in our body we have 23 celibate men and women, 81 single men and women, 137 married couples, and the blessing of 350 children (175 boys and 175 girls). We have several expressions of commitment. Since the first public commitment of 37 brothers and sisters in 1980, 139 others have joined them to make a total of 176 publicly committed members of the body. There are 173 who are underway members and 8 brothers and sisters are living an initial commitment. Adding to the strength of our body are 21 associate members and 28 affiliate members. Over the past 12 years, God has abundantly blessed us, and as a people we have much to be grateful for. We can join with the psalmist and say, "Behold how good it is, and how pleasant, where brethren dwell as one!" (Psalm 133:1).
