This article presents some simple options for characters who want a loyal dog companion.
Companion utility powers give their animal a meaningful role at the table, while the canine companion rules prevent them from dying accidentally during combat.
A canine companion darts between the legs of enemy and ally alike, yapping wildly. Canine companions cannot be targeted by attacks, and cannot make attacks of their own. If their master falls unconscious or dies, the canine companion retreats from the battlefield – only to reappear again once they’re back on their feet. Fetch Help
Companion Power “Hey, I think he’s trying to tell us something!” Daily • Companion Free Action Personal Trigger: You are captured or fall unconscious when no allies are present and conscious. Effect: Your canine companion moves at speed 10 to your nearest ally within 10 miles. It can then lead them to your current position.
CANINE COMPANION FEAT
Players can choose the canine companion feat to gain access to companion powers.
Scent Tracking Companion Power You hold the tattered cloth to his nose, and he’s off like a slingshot. Daily • Companion Minor Action Personal Requirement: An item belonging to the creature you’re trying to track. Effect: You gain a +5 bonus to Perception checks made to track a single creature. If the creature passed through the area you can even track it when there aren’t any visible trails (+5 DC).
Guard Dog Duty
Whether you’ve had it since it was a pup, or it just latched on one night at the tavern – that mutt is as much a part of you now as your own thumb. Benefit: Gain two of the following companion powers. These powers are granted in addition to your normal powers. You may take this feat multiple times to gain access to additional companion powers.
Companion Power You’ve grown to know the difference between the bark for breakfast and a bark for danger. Daily • Companion Free Action Personal Effect: You gain a +5 bonus to passive perception when sleeping (instead of the normal -5 penalty). If you detect danger, all sleeping creatures within 20 squares are also woken.
Companion Power Something’s got his hackles up, and now he just won’t stop growling... Daily • Companion Minor Action Close Burst 4 Target: Enemies in the burst Effect: You reveal the position of invisible undead enemies within the burst, but they remain invisible. Sustain minor: The effect persists.
Companion Power “I don’t think he likes you very much...” Daily • Companion Free Action Personal Effect: You gain a +5 bonus to passive insight until the end of the encounter.
“Aww, check out his little dance!” Daily • Companion Standard Action Close burst 10 Targets: Creatures in the burst Effect: You gain a +5 bonus to Bluff checks made to distract creatures in the burst, but only when rolling outside of combat. If you succeed against a hard DC, you also gain 1d6 silver pieces per creature in the burst.
