God's Word Exposes Our Sin
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.” We have seen that the Word of God is useful for rebuking, and our text this week confirms why this is the case. It is the Word of God that contains His Law and Paul explains that one function of the Law is to make us aware of our sin. Elsewhere in Scripture, we learn that sin is very deceitful. It so blinds us and dulls our spiritual sensitivities and upsets our moral compass that we become unaware of its presence in our lives. It is like a cancer that forms in our bodies, but because it is made of our own cells growing out of control, our normal defense mechanisms cannot detect it and it continues to develop unopposed - it has a kind of camouflage. The law is a statement of moral perfection. It declares how someone would be living if he or she had no sin in their life. Thus it is ideally suited to reveal sin in the human heart. To continue the cancer analogy, the Law works like a marker compound that only attaches to cancer cells, and tumors that were hard to spot before now light up plainly for all to see. Just as untreated cancer is fatal to the body, sin that is not dealt with will always prove fatal to the soul of the unbeliever and crippling to the spiritual life of the believer. So the fact that we have (in God's Word) a totally proven and reliable technology to detect and expose our sin is a wonderful gift - because once the sin is revealed and we repent of it, trusting Jesus alone for forgiveness, we know God will indeed forgive us and heal us thanks to the work of His Son. For the believer, being in the world is not an easy thing. There are plenty of temptations and opportunities for sin to start its cancerous growth. So it is important to have regular examinations and to catch the sin early before it causes a lot of damage and destruction. This is a very good reason for us to be reading the Word and hearing it preached!
