HONG KONG ÷A brothel is
a house oI prostitution. Born into
Brothels (2005) is a Iilm about
a group oI poor children, whose
Iamily members are prostitutes
and work in the red light district
oI Calcutta, India. There are
actually over 7,000 women who
work as prostitutes in that area.
Many girls, like Suchitra in the
Iilm, are oIten without education
and Iamily, and are Iorced to
become prostitutes at a young
age.
The story begins with Zana
Briski, a New York based
photographer, who took upon
herselI to teach a couple oI
children photography. She gave
each child a camera and taught
the children to see the world
through diIIerent eyes. Through
this experience, she had the
chance to become Iriends with
the children and also learned
many stories about them. She
even tried to help the children to
get education.
Zana Briski later started a non-
proIit organization shortly aIter
the Iilm, called Kids with
Cameras, which targets to help
change children's lives through
photography. This Iilm by Ross
KauIIman and her has won over
28 awards, including that 77th
Academy Awards Ior Best
Documentary Feature and the
Emmy Awar ds I or Best
Documentary Feature as well.
The children in the Iilm are
enthusiastic and bubbly despite
l i vi ng i n povert y. Thei r
photography is iaw dropping,
especially the picture with a girl
in a green turban beIore a
luminous blue wall, with laundry
hung to dry on the right. I am
amazed by their artistic skills
and eye Ior beauty. Many
pictures taken by these
children were Ieatured in art
exhibitions in NewYork and
Amst er dam. Amnest y
International had put the
picture noted above as the
cover oI its calendar. All
donat i ons and money
received Irom selling their
photography are used to
support the children Ior a
better education and a bright
Iuture.
By watching this movie, it
also motivates me to take up
photography. Photography
deIinitely has made a huge
diIIerence ever since its
invention. It allows people
Irom one side oI the earth to
see liIe on the other side.
Photography also carries the
t a c i t t e n e t o I t h e
photographer to the viewer;
perhaps that is why pictures
are always interesting to look
a t . A p e r s o n ma y
comprehend the picture
diIIerently than another
viewer beside them, and
perhaps view the picture
with diIIerent Ieelings as
time goes by.
